The Stadium Course at PGA WEST
About
This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.
The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.
Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

Bring your 'A' Game!
It's a course that is tougher than it needs to be for the average golfer.
I know the Career Builder has their tourney on it, but playing from the forward tees was tough enough!
Not sure I'd play it again, but this one time was for the experience
If you don't have your 'A' game when you play it, you're hooped!
I wouldn't recommend this course to a novice
17th hole the island green
was one of the most challenging courses I have played, when I go back I will play it again.
Play where the pros play!
Really fun to play where the pros play...tee boxes were perfect, fairways were buttery, greens rolled true! Such a good value for the amount of legit champion golf you get in one round.
Always a challenge!
I have played several rounds at the Stadium Course and each time I learn more about the place. It is definitely a thinking player's place, one learns to have the utmost respect for Pete's design. I highly recommend purchasing a yardage book in the Pro Shop.
However, our last round there was a bit disturbing. We had a noon t time with no one in front of us and a group 3 holes behind. Great pace of play! At the 6th hole we were informed by a ranger that we were 12 minutes behind. The GPS on our cart said we were 16 minutes ahead and we could not figure out who we were holding up! Needless to say we heeded to the warning and picked up the pace. Three holes later we were approached by another ranger who said "we were doing fine on time and were well clear of the group behind. On the 11th we were warned by a 3rd ranger and told we were on the clock (our GPS showed us 34 minutes ahead). We were then followed by a Community Patrol Security Guard that followed us to 17th hole. Maybe they thought we were going to break into someone's home! We finished the round in 4 hrs 3 minutes. Pretty good time for a foursome of 3 men and 1 woman! This was also the first time playing the course for 2 members of our group. With all this said, it hasn't changed my opinion of the course and I will continue to play it but, I think PGA West needs to do a better job at managing play.
amazing
watched this course on tv for years! enjoyed all 5 hours on the course. extremely difficult on and around the greens! everyone should play it once!
Fabulous Course, great amenities, great staff.
I've wanted to play The Stadium Course at PGA West for so long - it was worth the wait! The course was magnificent - challenging but fair - with interesting doglegs, elevation changes and well-placed hazards. The conditions were pristine - I'm not sure there was a blade of grass out of place. And as a decent (not good, but decent) female golfer, there were ample tee boxes from which to choose to play. Women golfers don't always get fair tee boxes especially at resorts.
And while I was golfing, my best friend (a non-golfer but avid UNC basketball fan) needed a place to watch the Tarheels play so we decided she'd come to PGA West with me. She read a book (and drank fun cocktails) before the game in a beautiful outdoor area overlooking the course, then she watched the game on a huge screen TV in a great bar.
We both could not have had a better time! Don't miss playing this course!
PGA West
The golf course in heat shape. This is not a place for beginners and if you think you can play it from the tees you normally play; think again.
once in a lifetime play
Just a great course to play to say you've walked in the footsteps of the pros. Playable for amateurs from the shorter tees (whites), although low handicaps could tempt the championship (not tournament) tees.
Conditions...
The conditions were prestine!
However, more hills than K2!
Recommend it should be played...by handicaps lower than 17...
I've played this course a number of times. Beautiful facility and extremely well kept grounds and golf course.. Every time I've been there, the PAID staff was courteous, attentive and seemingly dedicated to customer service. However, nearly every time I have met with the volunteer starter(s) at the first tee, I've found them condescending, arrogant and in some instances, bossy and rude.
Unfortunately, the customer service training is not imparted on the volunteer starters like it is with the clubhouse and pro shop personnel.
Several of the starters have come across like they were on a power trip, snickering and poking not so subtle fun at the visiting golfers while they stood together at the starters box (some who paid big money to be there). Some of these guys should be canned for their "privileged behavior" and at the least, they should realize that just because you get to direct people at a very desirable course, the paying customers are NOT there for your personal assessment and to massage your authoritative ego.
This is not just my perspective, but everybody in our group took note of this starters interaction with his coworker and the customers. Too bad it was not an isolated incident as this has been my experience on almost every visit.
BOTTOM LINE: Volunteers with minimal customer service interest, little to lose job wise and big authoritative egos can turn sour what is a great course with excellent paid employees and beautiful vistas.
Unbelievable!
An outstanding experience playing this venue with my son! Would do it again in a heart beat!!
Beautiful course
The course itself is far different from any we have played. Need to be a good target golfer which we aren't so was pretty difficult but enjoyed the experience. Pace of play was terrible probably due to over booking but also the fact that players were constantly looking for their balls. Glad we only payed $35 on GolfNow as we were only able to complete 13 holes in 3.5 hours.
Don't miss out
This course is absolutely amazing idk if it just because they are having the career builder tournament there in a couple of week or its in that great of condition all the time. Tough but beautiful golf course I will definitely be coming back for more.
PGA West Stadium Course - Same As It Ever Was
I first played the Stadium Course many years ago - Toney Penna persimmon driver (Model #2) and 3 wood, Ben Hogan Apex irons (1 through Equalizer) and a Wilson R 90 SW along with an original Wilson 8802 made up the bag. Likely playing a Titleist 100 Compression Pro Trajectory (in heavier wind, I'd switch to a 90 Compression Maxfli HT) . Today, I carry 4 wedges, a 19 degree hybrid, play a 5 piece ball... and the golf course is still as hard to day as it was back then. This is akin to Pete Dye meeting Hunter S. Thompson, they then hang out with Jerry Garcia and Timothy Leary, listening to the Grateful Dead and eating pizzas loaded with shrooms... and, finally, they throw together a truly Dye-oblical design. The slope rating has never been below 150. Course rating usually 4 strokes-plus over the rated par. And while it has been tweaked here and there throughout the years (softened), one still has to recall that this course was dropped from the PGA Tour's Bob Hope rota simply because it was too hard.
A Must for Every Golfer
Course was in excellent condition. Keep it on the fairway or you will pay! Hole # 17 ate us for dinner. It seems like an easy shot to the island green but once you are there you have to tell the yips to back off and let you swing freely. I couldn't have asked for a better setting or a better course for my X-mas present of a round of golf at PGA West.
Well done staff.
Christmas Golf 2016
Wife, Son and I played mid morning Christmas Day. The pace of play was excellent and we did not feel pushed nor did we push anyone. The fairways and greens were lush while the fringe areas were brown. The color contrast was great. This is not a course for a high handicap but mid to low will have great fun. Overall we thought the course was fantastic and hope to come back at least twice in 2017.
Poor Marshall
Perfect day going along fine trying to settle into this monster of a course. My buddy was having problems on the first few holes but was just settling in when the marshall warns us to catch up or skip a hole. He showed up again and then upset my buddy who I had to lead to the cart to have a seat while I tried to talk to this knuckle-head. Come to find out the self-professed members, whom never gave us a clue as to where to leave it, were in his ear. Let em go I said much to his disbelief that I had figured it out. We were better and playing back and they didn't like it. Well ANDY AND EDDIE, WA WAH WAH. All being said and done this is not a 4 1/2 hour course..SORRY! I took some time and bought a few shirts and when ai pulled out of the parking lot it was 5 hours after we had teed it!
They are having the Bob Hope there in about 5 weeks and they have a long way to go on that course. Once again speed of play is trumping course maintenance. Well I have a news flash!!!
Speed of play slows dramatically when I have to fix more than 10 ball marks between my ball and the hole and I WILL keep repairing them! After all don't I deserve to make a birdie putt? It's bad enough to be in a divot or a foot print and an unraked bunker, but when I can I will fix ball marks. Sorry NOT SORRY!
