The Stadium Course at PGA WEST
About
This is the monster of all monsters, the one that carries so many folktales of golfer terror with it that it should qualify as its own myth. The developers asked Pete Dye to make this "the toughest golf course in the world" and many argue he succeeded. Too well.
The Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta is one of those tracks that any self-respecting golf nut has to play once. Just to experience it. Just to say you did. Just to have stories of golf cruelty to tell at the office water cooler. There's a 19-foot deep bunker on the 16th hole. That's right. A 19-foot deep bunker. Your ball won't get out. Heck, you might not get out. From the back tees it measures 7,300 yards with an incredible 148-slope rating.
Every hole is a story waiting to be told. Either in success to be bragged about or failure to be even more bragged about. The PGA players moaned about this course so loud that it's no longer a regular stop on tour. Yet for average hackers, it's often a joy of punishment. Go in with the right attitude and it's liable to be one of your most unforgettable days of golf.

Rough is a little too much
You should not be punished for missing a fairway by 2 feet as our group was multiple times during the round. A ball rolling down the fairway and going off into the rough by a few feet should not be lost in the thick grass. Tees and greens were immaculate, but preferred the Norman Course over this.
We survived!!
Had a great time. 8 of us took on this beast and survived. Everything from tee to green was perfect. It was 97 degrees with a slight breeze and the beverage cart every 4 holes. Fairways like carpet and medium fast greens were the norm. here. After we recoupe, we'll be back next month.
Great experience
It is a beautiful course even in the rain with challenges with every shot. I'm happy to have played here.
Don't be in these fairways bunker
Amazing golf course with the par 5 16 hole and Alcatraz 17, love it
My fav place.
Stadium is my fav course. A Pete Dye design masterpiece. Its off season now, but the course is in great shape and the price is right.
Bring your A game!
The Stadium Course is always a challenge. If you're an average golfer bring extra balls. Tour Quality course open to the public. You can't go wrong. Course looks and plays awesome as always.
115 degrees
The layout is nice the greens are not good .the nice greens are for the people who pay 250.00 a round . People who are beginners should stay off all the courses.the staff are nice people
Excellent conditions, Challenging test of your game
The TPC Stadium course at PGA West was in excellent condition for a summers day. There were a few browned out spots on the greens, but pin placements were smartly placed away from these areas.
This is a challenging course that doesn't let you get away with poor shots. Prior to playing, it would be helpful to hit some sidehill/uphill practice iron shots wherever you can, since you will most likely have a few of these if you miss a fariway.
Pace of play was great on a weekday morning and we finished in 3hr 45min.
Horrible greens. Total disappointment
I had never played the Stadium Course before, so I was super excited to play it finally. Got a good price because it was 110 degrees outside. I didnt mind though. But what a disappointment . The greens were horrible. Half of them were dirt. The rest of the course was great, but there should have been an alert on the golfnow website because it was a waste of money. I would expect that the course would notify golfnow or somehow let future customers of the bad conditions. I played Terra Lago the next day and their greens were perfect. All in all, it's a beautiful course, but it would have been nice to know ahead of time that the greens were in no condition to be played on.
Over Hyped
I am a bogey player and found this course to be okay. Since it was the first time playing there I had only the preconceived notions about this course derived from what I had seen on television with the PGA tournaments played here. I didn't know where anything was on each hole. I suppose I could have researched it before going but I like the surprise. Since there are no maps at the course I had to fend for myself as it were. The overall course layout is pretty good. But all the extra landscaping done to make the course appear more challenging that is truly is was ridiculous. Undulating hills in the middle of the fairways and along the edges just made finding a ball harder and slowed the game down. If you can hit the ball fairly consistently this course isn't that difficult. The greens were good, just a few hard to read. Since this course is hyped so much there are a lot of people playing it and so a round takes a while. This course doesn't necessarily reward you for good shots but it sure does punish you for bad ones. I won't be back to play this on my own but if some friends want me to join them there I will. The best plan for this course is to stay to the right.
TPC Stadium
Very playable. A bit difficult for first time playing. A bit hot. 115 degrees on course.
Great Course, bad experience
My friends and I had a bad experience playing the stadium course which will probably keep us from coming back. The course was great, but we had two different groups that somehow got on the course in front of us and did not have any respect for others on the course. One group had four people, with only two people playing, so you would think it would be fast, but when they started hitting two and three shots at each location it caused a huge delay. Finally they were kicked off, but that created a gap between the original group in front of us, and somehow another group hopped on the course for the last five holes. By a strange coincidence, they were taking multiple shots each as well. Yes, we still finished in a reasonable amount of time, but the delay caused by groups that appeared to not belong out there was very frustrating.
It ate my lunch
I have never enjoyed a course eating my lunch like I do the Stadium course. You barely miss and you're punished. But, it was a blast!!! I'll be back next year!
Beautiful
Great course, great experience. Can't wait to play again! Dang bunkers!! Lol.
One negative was Pro Shop. Round ended late in the day, wanted to make a purchase, and the staff was less than welcoming! Quite a disappointment to an otherwise great day!
Great Greens!
Played the Nick Tourney and very much enjoyed the layout and tremendous quality of the greens. Look forward to playing it again!
WOW!!!
WE PLAY MANY COURSES AROUND THE COUNTRY. THIS WAS IN THE TOP 3 OF ALL TIME. IMMACULATE AND DIFFICULT, BUT SO MUCH AMAZING FUN.
BACKED UP A BIT BECAUSE OF THE SPRINKLES.
IT DIDNT HURT OUR OPINION AT ALL. IT IS A MUST PLAY.
True Players course
What an amazing experience! The facilities and staff are second to none. For the true golfer who is up for a challenge.
Good but not exceptional
To be honest, I was not as impressed with this course as I thought I would be, playing it for the first (and probably only) time. The course condition was not pristine, as I would have expected considering the premium fees one has to pay in order to play it. This may have been the result of the drought California has been experiencing for the past four years, but again, considering the green fees, I expected better maintenance.
The starter was very friendly and helpful -- I cannot commend him too highly. Sadly, however, the cart boys were sullen, refusing to take our cart after we finished playing #18 and requiring us to take it to the cart return ourselves. This is NOT the mark of a high-class golf facility!
As far as the course itself goes, it was challenging, but no more so than many others I have played. My son and I played the combo tees, and both of us shot to our handicaps. I had always heard what a "monster" it was, but found it to be an enjoyable course to play, the experience only diminished by a slow foursome in front and an impatient threesome behind us. All in all, I would recommend that a serious golfer play it once, but that would probably be enough. There are many courses that offer just as good an experience for far less money.
see what the pros deal with
Great Course - fun, very challenging - Advice: play it at yardage shorter than you are used to --worth the $$$$$.
Classic Pete Dye Design
This is a classic Pete Dye design that is visually intimidating but very playable and fair. Many tee shots appear to offer only a sliver of fairway but in fact there is plenty to work with. This course boasts more very deep bunkers than you will encounter anywhere. Avoid them if you can. The greens are among the best you will play anywhere - quick and true.
