Industry Hills

I have played both the Babe and the Ike in the past week. Both are in great shape. The greens are a little slower than they usually are but still roll true. Pace of play was fine, 4:10

Poor condition

Have been visiting the Industry Hills courses for 17 years and have never seen the Babe course in worse condition. Fairways are bare, tee boxes uneven, no sand in the traps and overall poor. Don’t know what is going on there but it is sad to see such a fine layout in such state of disrepair.

PALM READER

This review is for the BABE course at Industry Hills. Checking in at Pacific Palms is a bit awkward and perhaps even unfriendly. We arrived at the pro shop only 20 minutes before our tee time and were told to come back in 5-10 minutes to get our cart key because the Starter was taking a break (??). We didn't quite understand why the carts were being held hostage so close to our tee time. Anyhow, the BABE round starts with two narrow, unforgiving, uncomfortable tee shots. The first five holes are par 4's and many require something other than driver off the tee. The only par 3 on the front plays 250+ from the blue tees. Hole 9 is perhaps my least favorite hole and feels crammed into the edge of the property. Having said all of that, Industry Hills is kept in wonderful condition. The layout is challenging and mostly fair. Most every hole is tight and requires a precise tee shot and approach. The greens roll true and have many different difficult pin locations available. This is a course that is best played multiple times to learn the best strategy required to attack, and when it is best to play conservative shots.

Tough Course

Beautiful course tucked inside a resort. Course was tough. Bring your A-game! Make sure you are hitting the ball straight because it could get very frustrating, fast. Very enjoyable course either way.

Super nice course well maintained and challenging.

Super course conditions and friendly staff. The only down side for my round is the cart broke down, but we got another delivered within a half hour. The good news if you are reading this is next week they are getting all new carts.

Following up on the review above, played approximately 3 weeks later than the posted date... I don't believe there were new carts being used and we saw two broken-down carts on the course.

Worst experience checking in

tee time 1:50pm, Checked in at 1:25pm and had me get the cart at 1:40pm. Signed and assigned the carts without keys, could not start the carts and went back to the shop to pickup the keys and all staff looked like being busy.

Little disappointed with fairway conditions

I do like this course overall. However, on this day, fairways were probably in the worst shape I have ever seen them. Looked like they had done maintenance fairly recently, so hopefully, the fairways will recover in the next month or 2 and be back to what I am used to with this track. Was able to get a hot deal on this day so was still worth the cost. Otherwise, I'd pay normal green fees.

Very good, could be great

I was staying in Manhattan Beach and looking for a course that didn't put me on the 405. It was almost an hour to drive out to Industry Hills, but I was mostly against traffic in both directions, so the drive wasn't too bad.

Couldn't believe that we mostly had the course to ourselves on a Friday morning. Even without waiting on many shots, though, it's still going to be a 4.5 hour round. There's a lot of distance between holes, and the governors on the carts really slow you down. Without exaggeration, I bet you could knock at least 10 minutes off your round with carts driving at just normal speeds.

I enjoyed the layout of the course a lot. There's a lot of elevation change, and you have to be both straight and precise with your distances off the tee to be in the correct position to hit the green. Second shots have to worked to come in from the right direction to utilize slopes while minimizing risk. A shot straight at the hole, especially on the front nine, is often the incorrect play. While the course is somewhat narrow off the tee (again, much more so on the front than the back), the fairways tend to be in valleys that funnel balls back into the short grass.Thicker rough that prevented this could definitely make the course a much tougher test. I do appreciate that they both kept the sizes of the green down, while doing an excellent job of using slopes and humps to create distinct pin placements. The architect did a pretty good job of accepting that the course was going to be shorter, and embracing the challenge instead of taking a normal, modern course and just shortening it.

That said, I have two complaints with the course. The bigger one is that I wish the architect had allowed more options for running the ball up to the green. For example, the first hole could be an amazing risk/reward hole, as it plays blind and steeply down hill. Firming the course and removing the trough in front of the green could allow bombers to attempt to drive the first green, with a huge potential for disaster. Instead, the trough forces a layup and then an elevated shot to a narrow green without much back to front slope to help stop the ball. This is one example of a way the course could've been way more fun.

My other complaint is with the conditioning. The greens were on the slow side, and that's fine, if not preferable. But the course was really overwatered, which seems wrong from both an environmental and playability perspective.

Overall, I enjoyed my round here. The views were great, the layout was fun, and the price was absolutely reasonable. But it was hard to not think about how much better it could've been with a couple of design and maintenance changes.

Interesting design in an Interesting Place

Very cool track on a mountain side in the middle of the eastern industrial side of town. Beautiful resort attached to 36 holes of some very tricky golf but if you hit it well you can score.

Played Babe for the first time in several years. The course was in very good condition and the whether was great. It is still as I remembered it, where keeping the ball in play off the tee is essential. I only used drive a few times as many of the tee shots are to fairly tight fairways; at least for this 11-12 handicapper. Challenging but fair course which I will play again.
