Pajaro Valley Golf Club
About
Originally designed by Floyd McFarkland, Pajaro Valley Golf Club has large Monterey Pines lining its generous rolling fairways. Elevated tees provide scenic views of the Pajaro Valley below. Opened in 1922 and redesigned in 1962 by Robert Muir Graves, the course features small bentgrass greens and four ponds with water in play on three holes. The fourth is one of the course's most challenging holes, a 420-yard par 4 with triple-tiered green. The course also was once the home of former U.S. Open champion Olin Dutra, who spent the last part of his career teaching here.

This course is not being maintained as well as it has been in the past.
I have played this course quite a bit over the last 40 years. I have always like playing Pajaro. However, it is not nearly as nice as it used to be. The greens are in good shape, the fairways are mediocre, the cart paths are over due for replacement and the driving range teeing area is not being maintained, at all.
Interesting layout
First, I was double-booked at Pajaro Valley.
The course is interesting in some of the drastic elevation changes and the contour of some of the greens. Overall a pleasant experience.
needs lots of water
this course needs improvements. too many of the fairways were the opposite of lush and green. unless of course, you consider pasture lands nice.
I hear the greens get fast!
We played just after the greens were sanded, so they were not rolling true. But the guys we played with said they will after a few weeks, then look out! Played pretty tough from the blues, not a lot of sand traps and the ones that are there are thin so don't open your club or you'll skull one over the green like I did! Good course, will play again. Great food and drink at the bar.
NEEDS WORK
When booking on line you should call course to see if there are any conditions. GREENS WERE SANDED ... TERRIBLE SHAPE Also hole 16 canyon needs to be filled. It totally slowed play to crawl. YOU CANT SEE THE GROUP AHEAD.
GREAT COURSE
WE had a great time at Pajoro :) It was in good shape and pace of play was good!!!!!
Beautiful and in good shape but greens are way too firm.
Greens need to be softened up for amateur play. For example, on hole 8 three of us hit good drives followed by high, soft 9 irons that cleared the trap and hit the green on the fly. All three shots bounced far off the green ending from 8 to 15 feet off the green up the rise on the back in the rough.
I have numerous friends who won't go to PV and they have no complaint with contoured and complex greens, but feel the greens are like landing on a pool table.
Will definitely come back
I was very pleasantly surprised by Pajaro. I booked a noon tee time for Saturday on GolfNow, but got to go out early on my own, which turned out to be very pleasant. It wasn't overcrowded, and the course conditions were much nicer than expected. This is a really nice layout, no two holes are alike, and frequent elevation changes add to the interest. This course is a bit rustic, but to me it is rustic in all the right ways. It feels like the way golf is meant to be. The greens weren't quite as fast as I expected after reading other reviews, but wow, they are difficult due to having a ton of slope, especially on the back nine. Miss a three foot, side hill breaking putt, and you may well end up 12 feet below the hole. Overall this was a really nice experience, and worth the hour drive from the south bay. Definitely recommended.
Has some challange, course in very good condition.
This course is a great place to play. Just last year they put Marshalls on the course and this changed play to under 5 hours per round.
Recently established a Player for $50. Good deal on weekend play.
Greens Are Lightning Fast!
I like a lot about this course. To start with, overall it is a pretty course with a distinct hole design. They generally offer affordable rates as was the case this weekend. Finally it is very challenging. I only have 2 complaints really. The fairways this weekend were just too short, they looked nice and green, but the ball doesn't sit on it, but rather on the ground. The other is the greens, which are way too hard. I don't mind them being super fast, but they are also hard as a rock. With nearly every green being fronted by severe bunkering, and greens with a lot of slope and really high speeds, you are asked to drop shots in over bunkers while staying below the hole. This is tough to do under any circumstance, but when you make the greens rock hard, you really have slim chances at making a good approach. If they at least softened them a bit, good shots would stop quickly, right now they bounce and role like crazy. Change that, and I'm a fan for life.
The course is reasonably OK to play.
It's good course, and quite old. It is quite economic as the price has down. Good to play, and price is good, but need to do better maintenance.
excellent value
We are seniors and play Wed once a week.....would be interested in an annual senior rate for once a week play...the staff is flexible and allowed us to start 1/2 hour before our fixed start time....appreciated
Course not kept up. Greens are bumpy, fast, blotchy.
Whole course needs TLC. Course not kept up. Greens are bumpy, fast, blotchy.
course needs some sunshine
not much grass on some fairways...green on #3 was unplayable
but we can't complain much for the price of the round.....we had a great day...
A good $25 municipal course
Unfortunately, the price was $55. Poor conditions, lots of bare/thin spots, wet in other places although no rain for 3 weeks.
Wouldn't pay more than 25 to play Pajaro again
Course is challanging but not a beating
Pajaro is a vary injoyabe coarse with plenty of callanges, but not so difficult that you feel like you have paid for a beating. Bobby the manager is always on hand and puts in his personal touch when you check in.The course is in good condition and some of the recent updates makes the cousre easier to score as well. The views of elkhorn slough are plesant and the fresh ocean air make pajaro a pleasure to play.
Excellent course with some rough greenskeeping
This is a great piece of land with lots of classic big trees, you can mostly avoid the trees except on maybe 2 or 3 holes which are tight off the tee. Greens are sloping and in many cases it helps to have local knowledge. The par 3's are all excellent with a lot of character, number 11 will ruin your day if you don't have a good wedge game and you end up left or right. Some of the greens and tees are in rough shape. Normally you can accept greens that have been impacted by some natural challenges but tees that are bone dry and brown are tougher to figure out - they have these all over the course. That said you can play this course for a reasonable price which makes it great. Beware of highway 1 if you don't know this area - the stretch from Santa Cruz to Watsonville has become a nightmare - if you're coming from San Jose count on at least an hour. This isn't one of those fancy banquet facility places, it's golf-and-bar place with lots of Watsonville locals.
Good plactice course. Fair price.
Staffs are friendly and helpful. Bathroom at the clubhouse needs major repair. May be they are not proud of what they have. It s a good course.
A good way to start the day.
We had a nice time. Definitely a course that's better with a cart, so the golfnow deal is appreciated. The greens really are what they say and some of the holes have great views of the Monterey Bay. Most courses with such beautiful scenery cost Way more, and don't have nearly the value you get here. The staff is great, and unlike other Monterey courses, they'll be nice to you whether or not you have a bunch of money to blow on a round of golf. Not too many course marshalls out though, so be aware before you book a mid-day weekend round: you might be out there for awhile.
Great Greens
Love this course. Great greens Friendly staff.
We play here often and have a fast round/
