Maderas Golf Club
About
Maderas Golf Club is one of San Diego's most popular courses. Although it is less than an hour from Torrey Pines, it has a stunning landscape and challenging design that rivals that of the famed seaside course. Maderas may not have the ocean views, but its beautiful landscape provides just as much scenery. Nestled inland amongst rolling hills, the golf course weaves through rocky cliffs and outcroppings. There are mature trees throughout as well as a meandering creek and over forty acres of native wildflowers. There are three sparkling lakes and five waterfalls that come into play on the course. The demanding layout features difficult greens that are large and lightning fast. Several tricky uphill and downhill lies can be found throughout Maderas Golf Club thanks to the hilly terrain.

Maderas Golf Club
Great place to play. The course is challenging and in excellent shape. The greens are undulating, fast and in great shape. The staff and service is excellent. I really enjoyed the experience.
Hidden Gem
I've always enjoyed playing this course, I've tried to play it every time I make a road trip down form OC to play in the SD area. Plenty of challenge and fair, just make sure you select the appropriate of the 5 tees for your handicap. The greens were a little furry but had recovered nicely from the punch two weeks earlier. The rest of the course was excellent.
Extremely helpful staff!
BTW... don't pass up the home made lemonade!
less than expected, over priced but fun
The staff were great, but this is an over hyped, over priced course. It is supposed to be one of the top courses in the State and so I was expecting lush fairways and wonderful greens. To be fair, they had punched the greens earlier in the week and the sand traps were tops, but the fairways were hardly green. The fairways are sloped and there are challenging hazards. Without much grass in the fairways it is easy to find those hazards. The driving range was irons only because of work being done to it.
A coke was $4.50 and a hot dog was $8. I guess they don"t want people with my budget to play there, but at $130 I don't think that I got my value and won't be back.
Picturesque and Nasty
The key feature of Maderas is its beauty. The architects used all their weapons to make every hole a gem and still technically difficult. Every mis-hit shot raised the score. I would hate to see what it could do to you on a dry windy day!
Worth it
Top 100 Golf Digest certainly worth it. Friendly staff from clubhouse, starter to beverage cart; the marshall gave us the inside on a couple holes while he was around. Great experience and worth the cost. Course in great shape. The greens require shot making skills. If you miss on a number of them, it's trouble. Quiet course for a Thurs morning which was great
Top 100 ??????
Played this course in the slowest possible time, 5 1/2 hours. The management came out and spoke to the group in front of us early in the round, but that was the end of it.
The forward tee beds were nearly bare on multiple holes, the greens were very difficult to read, great utilization of the elements.
I question the Golf Digest designations. In this case the course condion was average not superior and certainly not manicured. Many of the local So. Cal. Courses were in better shape and had more challenging holes.
All in all $150 is a lot of money to spend to play this course...but you do get bragging rights for a top 100 course.

Beautifull course, immaculate, lightning fast greens!
Maderas is one of the nicest courses in all San Diego county!! Immaculate conditons, lightning fast greens, terrific service to boot!!
Wonderful.....but....
First of all, as you would expect, this is a first rate facility. The clubhouse is beautiful and the practice area is the best I've seen at a public course. However, the course and slope rating tell the story if what you're there for is the golf. The layout is intricate and very interesting but it's just too penal for my liking. You have to work on every shot and it just wears you out. I enjoy a challenge but I was playing well (for me) and I still lost four balls. I'd love to give Maderas five stars but I just can't do it.
Can't miss
Absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Every hole was like a signature hole. Picturesque and pristine. Definitely deserves its Golf Digest top 100 ranking. I suspect it will be moving up the charts in the coming years.
A Little Pricey
Good course to play... staff was friendly. Paired up with a couple of great players and had fun.. pace was good... did not feel rushed but played at a good pace.
One of the Best in San Diego
If you could only play one course in SD then Maderas would be at the top of my list. From the moment you open your car door to the minute you leave almost everything is taken care of for you. The course is in immaculate condition. Greens rolling easily 12-13 on the Stimp and as true as a Tour stop. They ask that you stay with the group ahead of you and then politely make sure you do. We had a slow round because of a tournament ahead of us but the marshal's kept an eye on the tourney participants and gently moved them along. Overall a very enjoyable round of golf.
Challenging Layout
Great layout with many elevation changes and side hill lies. Greens have a fair amount of undulation and rolled very well. Forced carries on some holes. You will use every club in your bag at this course so choose the tees you play from wisely! The staff was very friendly from start to finish. Great course and very reasonable rate using GN Hot Deal.
Great Course
I played Maderas on Presidents Day and was able to get through 18 holes in under 4.5 hours. They ask everyone to play fast and stay up with the people in front of them and it was evident. Rarely did we have to wait to hit our shot. The course in general is beautiful but definitely tough. The fairways are narrow and the greens have a lot of slope. I would suggest playing this course to anyone as I think it gives Torrey Pines a run for its money as the best course in the San Diego area.
Lived up to the ranking
Challenging but fair course. Get a yardage book if it's your first time on the course. A must play course!
Play here at least once
It's going to be difficult to find another place that puts it all together like maderas. From the staff to the course, totally top notch.
Great golf course
Loved this course. I played at noon at a discounted price. Would definitely do it again.
Beautiful Course.
Truly enjoyable, a must play for all golfers in the area.
wow what a track
this is worth the money, the staff were terrific, club house fantastic and the golf course was a treat. high
Great views, great fun
Billed as the most scenic golf course in the San Diego area -- and that's saying a lot considering Torrey Pines is in the mix -- Maderas has plenty of elevated tees and views that span miles. On top of that, it's interesting with lots of memorable holes, a top-notch staff and excellent course conditions. Definitely in my top three in the San Diego area.
Good experience
Nice curse, nice weather, nice partners. The course is challenging. Hope to play it again with friends.
