Maderas Golf Club is one of San Diego's most popular courses. Although it is less than an hour from Torrey Pines, it has a stunning landscape and challenging design that rivals that of the famed seaside course. Maderas may not have the ocean views, but its beautiful landscape provides just as much scenery. Nestled inland amongst rolling hills, the golf course weaves through rocky cliffs and outcroppings. There are mature trees throughout as well as a meandering creek and over forty acres of native wildflowers. There are three sparkling lakes and five waterfalls that come into play on the course. The demanding layout features difficult greens that are large and lightning fast. Several tricky uphill and downhill lies can be found throughout Maderas Golf Club thanks to the hilly terrain.

Very nice day on the course

Friendly staff welcomed us and showed us around. Pratice facilities in great conditions with coffee at driving range. Few putts (should have done more) on putting greenm got instructions at first hole and went on for a great round of golf with friends. Only downside, playing threesomes behind a foursome has an impact of playing and waiting times. First nine was OK in 2:15 but went on longer thereafter. Great to play a round of golf in November anyway for someone who is looking at snow at this time of the year. Great experience overall, great staff and great course conditions. Definitely a must play.

Outstanding Mountain Golf

Played 3 rounds 3 days in a row in SD and this course was in the most outstanding condition of all 3 and the other courses were top notch selections as well. The views are incredible on almost every hole. The golf course is a gem!
SD is indeed a top 50 golf city destination and if coming to play definitely put this course on your list.

Challenging Course with great views

The staff is always friendly and very attentive. If you are looking for good food along with golf, then this is also your place. The course conditions were very good to excellent and the greens played the same throughout the course. The views are always incredible as well. The only knock is the price, it can be pretty expensive, depending on when you play, so bring your wallet. However, if you love the course, they do have a great membership program that can help cut the costs a little. At the very least, it's worth going to play there if you've never been. You won't regret it.
It is a challenging course, so if you have a high handicap or are spraying the ball around, play the forward tees and maybe put the driver away. There aren't a lot of places to miss. That being said, the course generally plays fair. The only hole that gets a bit hokey is the 8th. It could do without the giant tree at the end of the water. The hole is hard enough already.
Bunkers generally play really soft, almost a beach sand. They also have some steep ones, so be sure to feel good about your bunker game. Greens typically play fast, but depending on the hole placement, are usually fair.
Carts are great and the beverage cart is top notch! Cart paths are well marked and well maintained as well.
Fairways are currently green and well maintained. Greens are always impeccable. The rough can get a little brutal at times, making it hard to find your ball, but hopefully you hit enough fairways so it isn't a problem.
The course is a precision course, so be sure to check the layout of holes and try to use the geography to help you. Pay attention to what is behind greens and don't be afraid to lay up. If you do this, you'll have a great day! Also be sure to hit the 19th hole for food and drinks. Drinks are bit pricey, but they don't cheap out on the pours and the food is top notch! Worth every penny! Overall, you can have a really great day of gold at Maderas.

Great course. Fun layout.

Really loved the course. Rough was challenging. Only downfall was a somewhat slow pace of play during the week. Also the greens were pretty slow that day. Besides that it was an amazing course!!!!

Very Nice / Well-run

Top notch course and very friendly staff ,from bag drop to Pro Shop to food service/ bev cart. Course fun but great fortune to be paired with a member who was very helpful with sight lines and carries. Greens the only small negative in that they could not be read. Would have to play many times to know break.

Always a test

Constantly challenging on every hole is how I describe Maderas GC. Set in a beautiful alcove of hugh homes the course has meticulously manicured fairways and greens. It is the challenge i really love.

Excellent course. Usual Troon excellence.

Played this course as part of a 5 round golf trip to San Diego. Next to Torrey Pines this was the best course of the trip.

The conditions were incredible from tee to green. The views are stunning. The course is very challenging, but fair. It will test every aspect of your game.

It's a little pricey, but worth the investment.

Unfortunate timing of day to play

First, I'll start with the good. This course is a beautiful and challenging course in fabulous condition, that is in keeping with the Troon Golf experience. I would love the opportunity to play this course again.
However, the day we played we were behind a group outing that included people who apparently had never touched a golf club. Also, we were behind a 3some of guys who hit into us twice, and were right on top of us, until we had a marshall talked to them.
So, the overall experience was not much fun for us, and we were really disappointed with such a great golf course. Be sure to make sure to play on a less busy day to really enjoy the course!

Top Course Played

The experience was great. The round started friendly and accommodating staff, from the pro shop manager to the starter. The facilities are beautiful and the golf course features amazing landscapes and views. The pictures are a true reflection of what you can expect on the course. I would highly recommend this to any of my golf buddies. If you enjoy being well taken care of and playing a beautiful, challenging course you'll want to play Maderas. I've played the other top courses in the San Diego area and this one is my favorite.

Great Course, Great Staff

Maderas is a treat for me, little out of my comfort zone price wise, but oh what a treat when I pony up! The first thing you notice is the absence of noise and the beauty of the surroundings. The conditions are fantastic, the greens among the best I've played. While it is a test for me, the variety of tees offered will lead to a manageable round or, if I choose, a severe test of my abilities. I am not what I would consider a country club golfer, yet I was made to feel entirely at home by every staff member that I came in contact with. Also, and this is becoming a sore point with me at MANY courses, they really kept track of the pace of play. There is an art to keeping the pace going without being overbearing. Maderas seems to keep the pace up seamlessly.

Very nice but very expensive

I recommend Maderas for anyone that money is not an object. For the price of Maderas, Crossings at Carlsbad is equally as nice but WAY less expensive. Fairways, greens excellent. Challenging - bring extra balls.

Outstanding .....as expected.

Superlatives are all I can say for this course and their staff all around. I was disappointed that the practice sand and chipping area was closed down. New emphasis by course in promoting a 4.5 hour round which is very good & even checked your time of play at the 9th hole which I applaud. Very challenging course but still fair to the golfer. Would not recommend this course to a new golfer due to course challenges.
