About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 01/2020.
This course, designed by Jeff Brauer and opened in 1991, offers one of the more enjoyable experiences for the average golfer. The par 72 layout is only 6,500 yards and is void of trees, making it more of a links-style course. Mounding is prominent around the multi-tiered greens, making it difficult for ups and downs after approach miscues.
Two holes stand out, both on the back nine. The par 5 No. 12 is reachable in two at only 488 yards, but water guards the landing area off the tee and the green has three levels. No. 17 is a fun par 3 playing 195 yards over a lake.
Remember that the trick to Bluebonnet is the greens. Pay attention to the pin placements and try to find the right level of the green.
Getting there : From I-290 going west get off at the Decker Ln. exit, and drive about 1.5 miles to the course.

This course was ok.
Person in the clubhouse was indiferant to us being there. Course was in ok shape not the best I've played on. Golfers not following edicat. Standing in middle of fairway shooting at another fairway multiple times. Never saw a Marshall the entire round.
Please fix your ball marks on the greens!!!
First time in 3 years to play at Bluebonnet, great course. They had it set up for a Sunday PGA event, pins tucked, or on upper tiers, pretty diabolical. The greens are in near perfect condition, very firm, and fast. I wish that players would respect the condition of these greens by fixing their ball marks. If you are good (or fortunate) enough to create ball marks, you should have the respect and decency (etiquette), to repair them, as a matter of fact even if you don't make one, you should fix at least 1 (or 2) every time you walk on to a green. # 15 looked like the surface of the moon, I am sad and embarrassed for the golfers of Austin (you know who you are) It is akin to littering it's just like throwing your McDonalds trash out the window of your car. Please...Fix 2 every time. Give a hoot dont pollute!!!
Fire ants!
The greens were in great shape. That is the one good thing. Also the man working was very friendly and we chit chatted for a little bit. The problems were fire ants all over the place. Almost every tee box has them and my bit me and my partner on multiple occasions. So that kinda messing with your swing and thoughts throughout the swing. Also the fairways were pretty covered with them. The sand traps were also very hard and some had big puddles. That's expected since we did get a bunch of rain earlier this week. It did take us about 5 hours to finish. For some reason the were a bunch of 2 playing instead of being in groups of four. We ended up having a six some by the back 9. No marshall or cart girl are present on the course.
Friendliest Golf in Town
I played yesterday in 30 mph wind! Tremendously goofy but... fun! Also played SUN 09OCT2016. Both times, Staff was supremely FRIENDLY, unlike "most" City of Austin courses where Staff consistently & traditionally ranges from snobbish to unpleasant (i.e., Lions is the worst for rude Staff, 2nd worst = Roy Kizer). Bluebonnet Staff from Pro Shop to golf-cart maintenance Staff >> friendly and provide the "We're happy you chose to $pend your golf dollar$ at Bluebonnet today" attitude.
Both times, course was in gorgeous condition. Yesterday greens had just been mowed but I didn't notice because I've played on scrappy City of Austin greens and can still 2-putt. I just love to play golf so it doesn't bother me if greens are sweet or sour. Bluebonnet's are sublime if that matters to you.
Going back to attitude. It's so sad that the Mayor of Austin doesn't pay attention to the bad attitudes of their Golf Staff. Bluebonnet Hills "gets it." Golf attendance has been DECLINING since 2005! Do the Math: You can ONLY play one golf game at a time-- so you MUST choose only one golf course over another. I would rather play a goat ranch w/ friendly Staff than have my golf outing bummed out at a AAA+++ course w/ stuck-up Staff.
Austin is so blessed to have Bluebonnet Hills which is easy on the eyes, in great shape, challenging layout, great views, and Staff who are happy to welcome those who love the game.
Greens sanded
Course is good. Fairways in good shape. Greens a little slick and dry. Tee boxes in good shape. Greens sanded on Monday. Not too bad.
Favorite Course for a Quick Round
I'll keep this short and simple - I played Bluebonnet years ago and did not like it. I didn't like it enough that it took me about 4 years to get back there, and I'm glad I did. Bluebonnet is now one of my favorite courses, period. It's fun, in really solid shape, and it's not expensive. This is my go to when I want to get out and play a round.
great greens for the $$$
greens are rolling great, best course for the money in/around austin
Lots of Fun
Man, this reservation worked well. The person at the course called me by name as I informed him I had a reservation through Last Minute Golfer; just so friendly. This got me off to a good start!
Good course for the price.
Fairways were in good shape, greens were very hard but alright for a public course. My only complaint is there wasn't a beverage cart running around.
Bummed this time around
I play Bluebonnet a few times a year. This course is known locally as a good alternative to the Austin munis because they don't allow fivesomes and normally stay on top of pace of play. They pride themselves on the four-hour round. And one time we played a few years ago, a starter told us to pick up the pace after finishing the front nine in two hours. I absolutely loved that.
So we were bummed Saturday that the round took five hours and there were no rangers managing pace of play. I felt pretty bad for the walking two-ball behind us who would catch up to us on almost every single tee box. Had to have been brutal for them. I hope this is an aberration because Bluebonnet could have a real niche in the Austin area if they can be the one affordable course in town that isn't slow on weekends.
The good news is the greens are in good shape, and based on what I'm hearing about some of the munis this summer struggling with their surfaces, is valuable.
Course is GREAT, pace of play not so much
Course is in great shape. It had just rained a lot in the area so there were still some wet and muddy spots. Biggest problem is no Marshall to regulate pace of play. Way too slow to be fun.
Good value for the money
Considering that it was a 100 degrees out. The greens and fairways were in very good shape. The course views were nice and some holes a good challenge for any golfer from beginner to advanced.
Great conditions
The staff at Bluebonnet is very friendly and helpful. The head pro Dillion is hands on with all the golfers- he made it a point to drive a cart out to one of the holes and shook hands with players and thanked them for playing the course. I saw him do that for a long time one afternoon. The course is in great shape- fairways good and the greens are always smooth and fast. Not a lot of trees but enough brush that defines every fairway- you can hit out of trees but you aren't hitting out of the brush- fun course to play
Wonderful Value - In Great Shape
This was my first time playing Bluebonnet Hills and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The course was in amazing shape, with the greens rolling very true with no issues at all.
The pace of play was great. I played with my 8 year old son and we were paired with two other gentleman. We finished 18 holes in just over 4 hours without ever feeling rushed even though the course was full.
For the money, it was as good as any course I've played around Austin. We had a great time.
Ok course, surprisingly nice greens
Decided to play a quick late afternoon round and was pleasently surprised. The layout is fairly basic and straightforward, a couple challenging holes but mainly because I had never played there before. I'd recommend if you just want to get some swings in but it's not a course I'd play regularly.
Pros: Decent pace of play, greens were in really good shape, cheap.
Cons: Conditions (other than the greens) were average or below average in some spots, bunkers were terrible, cart paths are very narrow and have large drops offs at some points (we almost tipped our cart).
Need to try this again at one point
I will try not to be too harsh here but it needs to be known, there are several areas of improvement that would make this course even better. For starters, there were no range balls or a golf cart available when we got there. It wasn't until 10 minutes before our tee time that we got those items. The pace of play was poor at best. It's supposed to be a four hour game and it turned out to be close to 5 and half hours. I'm not sure why two somes were allowed and not grouped together. There was a log jam at hole 4 through 17. At hole 15, three groups behind us decided to leave since they were running out of daylight and there was still multiple groups ahead. This was my first time here and the course was actually in pretty good condition. It may be a while before I decide to go back.
Where's a policeman when you need one?
A group of 4 young beer drinking hackers played in front. Their manners were worse than their game. Their lack of golf etiquette ruined everybody's day. But the biggest problem was that there was not a marshal to govern and help the pace of play. I won't go back.
good beginner course
great course for the newly learning golfer and for the vacationer looking for a place to play.
True To It's 4-Hr Round Claim to Fame
Nice course. Great value! But best of all was the 4 hour round on a Sunday afternoon - Priceless!
Live Life & Play
