Ford's Colony Country Club - Marsh Hawk Course
About
The traditional tree-lined fairways undulating greens and the best finishing holes around create a complete journey through the property. A par 72 measuring 6650 yards from the back tees Marsh Hawks greatest defense are narrow fairways and strategically placed bunkers. The real beauty of this golf course lies within the contour of the holes around natural lakes and elevation changes that can delude your depth perception.
Marsh Hawk has played host to the 1998 and 1999 Virginia State Opens Monday qualifying for the 2005 2006 and 2007 Nationwide Tours Henrico County Open and the Monday qualifier for the PGA Tours Michelob Championship for 12 years straight.

18th Tee Photo submitted by CharlieinPA on 02/27/2017
Poor golf carts
Gas carts were sluggish and on their last legs. Felt like our cart was going to leave us stranded. Very very difficult to start carts after every hole. Called for new cart while on course, but Pro shop was not responsive to concerns about the carts.
Great Course that requires shot placement
It is February so the grass is almost non existent and the fairways were wet and even muddy in some places, but it is February. Pace of play was great. The starter sent us to the first tee of the Blackheath course saying that if the twosome that was to join us was not there by our tee time to go without them. We started without them and finished the round in 3-1/2 hours. We occasionally saw the group in front of us finishing a hole when we were approaching the tee. We saw a twosome behind us at one point. They were 2 to 3 holes behind us. It was fantastic. A relaxing round at a comfortable pace. Greens were a little slow and mostly rolled true. Bunkers and fairways were pretty good shape for winter. Great course. I look forward to playing again when I am in Williamsburg area.
Course was fine however there was no water available on any of the holes they had vending machines for drinks but everything was sold out. Also there was no cart person
Blue Heron
Now we aren't scratch golfers , just a tad under a bogey golfer. Tees and fairways dormant , but traps and greens we thought very good shape . Greens are fast but consistent and the pin placements were downright mean , but loved the challenge and had a great time. Two couples drove past us one saying this place is packed and the other , your in for a long round . Yes 75 degrees in Febriary so we were expecting some traffic. We finished the 18 in 4 hours , so we found the pace good. The layout was we thought creative . Holes shape left right and thourghly enjoyed the day. The greens are the challenge . Fairways wide and found not that long from the blue tees .We had Golf Now reservation and were treated right , easy check in and first timers explained where to go and how to proceed. Starter was great , explained first time gave us few hole hints and have a great round. Felt welcomed , had a great round probably because of the environment and people. Played exceptionally well , both my partner and myself . New course for us and still played 8 holes in regulation, good for this ole hacker . Live in Richmond , so don't get to Williamsburg for golf often , but will get down here more now. Maybe our expectations aren't as high as others, but we will definitely be back because loved the course , the area and again we were greeted with a smile from check in , to starter and gentleman who took our cart at the end even asked if we had a great round. Hint for first timers on Blue Heron, followe signs to 5 th tee and once cross bridge , yes continue past green on right , tee box top of hill on the left. Won't get back to clubhouse till 18 is over , so make sure have plenty fluids and snacks .
What happened to the beautiful course?
The greens were in horrible condition! I was very disappointed in the overall condition of the course. I expected more. I used to play here years ago when this was a beautiful country club environment.
Blackheath
Well, the weather was SUPPOSED to be 52 and sunny but the skies never cleared up and it stayed pretty cold. That said, if the weather would have been sunny, I feel the day would have been nearly perfect.
First time playing Ford's Colony and the Blackheath course layout is fabulous. I didn't feel like any one hole was the same as another. Great club selection course and I hope to play it next year in the summer.
Greens were challenging but fair and true.
Go and play it, after the round, get a meal and drink from Murdoch's. Granted I was pretty hungry but one of the best burgers in a while.
Overrated Course
I played here with 3 other scratch player golfers.
1. Aerification of the greens was not disclosed to the GolfNow community so imagine going and not being notified because the course doesn't say anything and as we approach the 1st green it's a total letdown.
2. The staff treat non members like we are not welcomed and talked to us very rude and disrespectful.
3. The golf course manager (Richard) on the phone the next day said since we paid less than what he charges his "members" for just a golf cart there was nothing he can do to fix the problem.
4. This course is over rated and over priced compared to the other surrounding courses and the staff is taught to treat members like humans and the outsiders like trash.
Don't believe the hype and don't waste your time or money at Fords Colony, you will regret it.
Great course in great condition
Have played this course several times before and thought I would try it again. I was not disappointed. The course was excellently maintained even though it is the dead of winter. Greens rolled true and were not significantly slower than in the fall. Fairways were dormant but in good condition with most divots filled in. Staff, as always, was welcoming and helpful.
Black Heath
Used golfnow special rate of $25 +fees. First time playing here. Great value, but some of the greens were in poor shape. Great layout and generous fairways with some challenging hole locations. Overall very good course and recommend anyone looking for a good value.
great layout, improving conditions
Been a while since I played Ford's Colony. Played Blackheath today. I had forgotten what a nice layout the course is, makes you use a lot of different clubs. Played the back tees, about 6700 yds. Still a bit wet from the nonstop rain we have had but improving. A lot of work being done on the course, I think it will be great come spring. Very playable now, greens were rolling well and the bunkers were in good condition. I certainly wish more people would fix their ball marks.
Grant
Met for year end golf with Dad and brothers . Course in excellent conditions. Staff friendly and helpful. We ate and drank at the restaurant And food and service was great.
Fantastic course. Avoid Murdochs restaurant after your round
The golf course was outstanding. The staff at the golf course both in the pro shop and bag drop were fabulous! The course has a great layout. I suggest long ball hitters to definitely play blues or tips. White tees will get you in trouble and most won't be able to hit driver. Hole 18 has water up front that a good drive will catch. Highly suggest going somewhere besides Murdochs restaurant at the course. Staff (excluding Connor bar staff) are rude and lazy. You automatically get hit with 18% gratuity for lazy inattentive staff. Plenty of other bars and restaurants nearby. The course us a must play when in Williamsburg
Excellent course Marsh Hawk
The course was in excellent condition. It is a great corse setup. It is a must play. Can't wait to play the other two courses
a must play for all, i will return asap
i had a great day, course, staff, patrons all very nice... I was fortunate to play with 2 members and couldn't have had a better time, in my humble opinion this is a must play for everyone.
Excellent Course
Played Blue Heron yesterday, excellent condition, driest this holiday, pace of play was ok at 4 hours 30 minutes.
In good shape slow play
Slow play players need to let people play through Especially if it's a one player Or they just can't play
Ford's Colony Blue Herron
Played on 10-4-16, course in very nice condition, but very wet. Greens were very fast, get it on line and it would get there, not on line and you were flying by. Cart path only, would think a country club would have better drainage. Cart path only and yet a ranger was on our 16 golfer group about picking up pace. We completed round in time, not sure what the issue was. Would of been nice to see the beverage/food cart sooner than the 8th hole. Would recommend course on a nice sunny dry day.
Real Nice
Course was in excellent shape. Tees, Fairways, sand-traps rough, and greens were excellent. Fine sand in bunkers. Had a wonderful time.
Thank you for your review! We are thrilled that you enjoyed your experience at Ford's Colony. We are pleased that you enjoyed our course conditions. We hope to see you back soon for your next round!
GREAT SHAPE
Course was in the best shape I've ever seen. Greens were great. Fast and true. Almost no ball marks and no bare areas. Will be returning next week to play again !!
Thank you for your review! We are so glad that you enjoyed our course. We look forward to having you back again for your next round next week!
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
Contacted the person who made the comment to this review of course and nothing has been done about our experience and no one has replied to the email I sent. Don't let the green grass fool you go somewhere else to spend your money and play your round of golf. As you can see Fords Colony doesn't care about non-members.
