Ford's Colony Country Club - Marsh Hawk Course
About
The traditional tree-lined fairways undulating greens and the best finishing holes around create a complete journey through the property. A par 72 measuring 6650 yards from the back tees Marsh Hawks greatest defense are narrow fairways and strategically placed bunkers. The real beauty of this golf course lies within the contour of the holes around natural lakes and elevation changes that can delude your depth perception.
Marsh Hawk has played host to the 1998 and 1999 Virginia State Opens Monday qualifying for the 2005 2006 and 2007 Nationwide Tours Henrico County Open and the Monday qualifier for the PGA Tours Michelob Championship for 12 years straight.

Best of the 3!!!
Blue Heron is definitely the best of the three courses at Ford's Colony. Like the other two courses it has a great layout! Elevation changes, plenty of water, and demands good shots. The greens were some of the best Bermuda greens I've played. Bunkers, tee's, and fairways were well maintained. Like the other courses, OB is not too far from the fairways. Staff was great!
Greens are Toast
I was really excited to play this course because I'm a fan of Dan & Ellis Maples. Was really disappointed to find out the greens were smoked! The greens were more dirt than grass. In Ford's Colony's defense this has been an extremely brutal summer for Southeast Virginia temperature wise and the greens are bent grass. Fairways and tee's weren't in bad shape. Bunkers were well kept. The course has an excellent layout that rewards quality shots but beware that OB stakes lurk just outside the fairways of just about every hole. Gotta hit the ball where you're looking. Would've given the course a single star if it were not for the staff friendliness and course design.
Thank you for your review! We apologize that our course conditions were not up to your expectation. We will make sure to address this issue. We hope to see you back for another round at Ford's Colony!
Excellent Dan Maples designs.
I played the Blue Heron course this year and Blackheath at the same time last year. Both times the courses were in mint shape. Blackheath was supposed to be the toughest of the three 18 holes courses and it did have challenge, with more water coming into play than Blue Heron, but Blue Heron was no slouch. Dan Maples designs courses that are challenging for the better golfer but also playable for the average hack. I've read these other reviews and wondered if I came to play at the right time of year, because I'd be lying if I said there were things to complain about.
Poor condition, less than excited staff
Apparently the courses at Ford's Colony are recently under new management. If the new management hopes to succeed and make money, they either need new superintendent and course staff or to retrain the ones they have. Course needs a lot of work, for an "upscale" complex, not even a ball wash on every hole. No water coolers, fairways were just plain mud, no grass. I don't want to hear about a bad winter, because I played Tradition at Stonehouse just a few miles away the next day and it was in perfect condition. Much better choices in the area.
Soggy Mess
Course has a great layout, but doesn't drain well. Unfortunately, the area had a couple weeks of fairly significant rain and the course showed it. Balls plugged in the fairways and it was just a mudbowl overall. That being said, the greens appear to have changed from bent to Poa Annua and were absolutely rock hard. Balls struck well to the center of the green tended to bounce off the back. It was frustrating to say the least and the greens did not roll true. See full review and playing tips at tipsgolftips on the web. I like the layout, but don't play it within a couple weeks after heavy rains. Also, watch out and don't park in the member parking. Staff is very snarky about that. The restaurant has a good menu, but wasn't overly attentive on orders and got mine wrong twice; however, food was well-prepared and the prices reasonable.
Marsh Hawk at Fords Colony
The weather was not great but the course was in good shape for this time of year. The greens were excellent.
Ford's Colony GCAT Major - Marsh Hawk
One of three courses at the Ford's Colony resort in Williamsburg, VA which has activities for the entire family. Played this course during the 2015 GCAT Major on 4/25/2015. The layout of this course, while challenging, was very fair. Signature holes were #3's downhill, dogleg, par 5, #4's short but challenging par 4, #8's all carry over water par 3 and #11's downhill, dogleg, carry the water on the second shot par 5. Greens were in good to fair shape and inconsistently fast. Like most courses this year, fairways were still recovering from a difficult winter season. I imagine a month later into the year, this course will be fabulous to play once it has a chance to recover.
Overall Poor at best
The course was in very poor condition. Pro shop said it was because of the winter weather they experienced. Played in a golf tournament where the course was unprepared for that many people. On Sunday they claimed they had no breakfast food. Members keyed cars that parked in "Members Only" parking lot. Zero chance of me ever returning to Ford's Colony. Rained our second round way to soon as the weather was gorgeous an hour after they made the decision. Allowed others to play yet cancelled our second round. Very poorly run organization.
Great course
Greens wer fast and ball rolls true. Staff was super from the time we step on the property, greeted with a smile and it coninued throughout our round and Lunch after at the Tavern.
Ford Colony was great for playing in November. I will surely play again if I am back in Virginia.
The course was very friendly but left a lot of challenges also. There were several water holes and you had to have your A game along. Hole #1 started your thought process right away and on it went. Very good course.
Tight and bring your GPS
The Marsh Hawk course (one of three) at Ford's Colony put a premium on accuracy, particularly with the amount of leaves that are just off the fairway and make it very difficult to find an errant shot. The design is nice, the conditions quite good for November, but there are a lot of things you won't see without a range finder that make it tough to pull the right club or at least miss it on the proper side. Hopefully you'll get paired with a friendly member (as I did) who can clue you in on what's just beyond your sight. This course has a moderate amount of water, I understand the Blackheath course has a lot more. It's worth a trip if you get a good deal on Golf Now.
Great lay-out......dog-legs and elevation changes...Greens well bunkered
As soon as you drive up Ford's Colony "rings" Private Country Club....Short course that will "eat your lunch" when breezy. All day uphill, downhill and doglegs. Course is well bunkered...It is without a question a "play it again" course...Fun Play
3 18 hole championship courses on same property...Great golfing on all 3 courses,,,
Perfect Greens for the time of year.
Would definitely recommend. The greens were good speed and offered challenging lines. Excellent staff and great value.
Good course, average greens
Played the Blue Heron Course and the greens were a little hairy and bumpy
Great layout, views and greens
Beautiful course, played the black heath course. 13 out of 18 holes had water hazards. Took a little long to play because it was Veterans weekend so everyone was out. would play here again. Definetly use Golf Now, course is $78 at pro shop, thru Golf Now is $25.
Course was in excellent shape after 7 inches of rain.
The course dried out quickly after tropical storm Sandy dumped 7 inches of rain on the region. The fairways were in great shape and the greens were in even better shape. There were some bunkers that were still full of water but not a significant factor to the game.
Nice layout with island green 18th hole.
Nice layout with island green 18th hole. Fun and fair course if you choose correct tee for your level of play.
Great course for a great deal.
The course was in fantastic shape, we rarely had to wait for the group in front of us, and Golf Now provided the experience for a great price.
54 holes but you can't select yor course
Best - Marsh Hawk, Black Heath and then Blue Heron( actually saw 5 "Blue Heron while playing this course.
Thank you for your review! We are thrilled that you enjoyed our course as well as our staff. We hope to see you back again soon at Ford's Colony!
