Sand Canyon Country Club

About
The Valley is one of two 18-hole golf courses at Robinson Ranch. As the name would imply, the course is tucked into the Santa Clarita Valley next to the Los Angeles National Forest. California Sycamores, coastal live oaks, and stands of sage and chaparral blanket both golf courses. Scenic waterfalls further enhance the beautiful landscape and they also come into play throughout, most notably on the Valley's finishing hole. The Valley is the original layout at Robinson Ranch. It is not as hilly and plays more like a championship golf course than the shorter Mountain Course. Several elevated tees are incorporated into the design to take advantage of the stunning mountains views. The traditional layout combines both desert-style holes with holes that more tree lined. It offers an interesting variety of challenged including doglegs, sand traps strategically placed along the landing zones, and well protected, multi-tiered greens.

good course gone bad
Almost unplayable. Fairway is dirt tee to green. Greens also dead and fast but OK.
RR Valley
Played the Blues (6469/72.4/139) using Forelinx in slightly over 4H with Jeff, Mark & Bruce midday. The weather was fairly calm, overcast and in the mid 50's.
The tees are Okay. Reasonably level with most divots already filled in, more thin than lush.
The fairways are still basically hardpan. A few areas have greened up after the recent rains and they at least have played better my last 2 rounds here. However, still below average.
The rough around the fairways ranges from bare spots to thin. WELL below average. The rough around the greens is mowed down and while much lusher, it's still winter thin.
The fairway bunkers are hard packed and good to play except for an abundance of rocks. The green side bunkers are well maintained with high quality sand but have inconsistent depths.
The greens were firm but held approach shots well. Fairly smooth and putted medium fast speed with few ball marks.
This course would be challenging to walk, fairly hilly. Several holes have severe elevation changes. Tough course because almost every shot has red hazard penalty stroke areas both left and right of your landing zone. RR has a beautiful clubhouse and the customer service from everyone I have encountered on every single visit has been great. Great layout in poor condition about sums up this review. Recommended = Not not until they get some grass on the fairways & rough.
Dry but fun.
The fairway ways were very dry and hard. Had to it it clean off the ground to avoid mishit. Good thing the ball rolled a long way...lol! Still a fun layout to play, especially with no one around to slow pace. Finished in 3 hours!
Fairways are dry
Due to the water shortage, The fairways are bone dry and it is like hitting off bare earth.
A disappointment
I'm sitting In a doctor's office this morning waiting to be seen for whiplash because of a fall I suffered while playing my round at Robinson Ranch. While most of the course is just dead brown grass patches or dirt because of the drought, many of the tee boxes were swamps with standing water. On one, as I walked back to my cart, I slipped down a muddy, slick hill next to the cart path. I fell on my back and my head snapped back and hit the ground. So, your choices are to play from muddy waterlogged tee boxes or hit from hardpan or worse on most of the fairways.
Staff was friendly and the greens -- or should I call them browns -- rolled nicely. But this course is in very bad shape now. It's disappointing for a course that has always been one of my favorites in Southern California for a long time.
Fun round but terrible conditions
I played with a partner and was paired with another twosome. There was a frost advisory so everyone was about 15 minutes behind, even for our 9:40am tee time. Because of this everyone was starting on the back 9. The only green you will see is from the trees. All of the grass is dead or dormant, even on the fairways. I had been in the fairway's most of the game and was regularly hitting off dirt. With the hard pack on the fairways the ball will roll forever. The greens are in better shape than the fairways, but not exceptional. For some reason there is a bunch of what looks like rabbit droppings on the greens which is ridiculous. It would have been great if the greens keeper would have blown it off but instead the greens are littered with pellets that make putting impossible unless everyone spends 4 minutes brushing it out of your line. On a good note, there are some really fun holes on this course with different elevation changes. A few water holes too. I have played this course when it is lush and it's fantastic. It's unfortunate that this round the course was in such bad shape. The good news is that the staff is pretty upfront about it and they give you a small basket of range balls when checking in.
Great greens but fairways suffering from drought
Great course.
Very challenging and greens are great but the fairways are suffering from lack of water due to drought in California and they are on well water. great staff and you just deal with uneven fairway shots.
RR Valley
Played the Blues (6469/72.4/139) using Forelinx in 4H, 25M as a 3some mid day with brothers Paul & Bob. Our gallery was their 92 year old father John riding along. The weather was terrible for golf, cold and windy.
The tees are decent. More lush than thin with most divots already filled in.
The fairways are basically hardpan and getting worse every time I play here. Thin would be an upgrade.
The rough around the fairways are also mostly hardpan. The rough around the greens is much lusher, mowed down and was usually good to chip out of.
The fairway bunkers are hard packed and good to play out of. The green side bunkers are very nicely maintained with high quality sand.
The greens putted nice. Few ball marks, smooth, medium fast, firm but held approach shots well.
Beautiful clubhouse and the customer service from everyone I encountered was excellent. No beverage cart, which is a surprise for a Sunday afternoon?
This course would be challenging to walk, fairly hilly. Several holes have severe elevation changes. The layout on the front has multiple par 4's that are layup holes and in course out of bounds between holes 5/6. This is a course that forces you to hit shorter clubs off 4-5 different par 4 tees because of tightness or hazards that require you to hit it no farther than "X" distance. I like the layout on the back better. Tough course because almost every shot has red hazard penalty stroke areas both left and right of your landing zone. The course overall is one of the more demanding layouts in Southern California. Recommended = Not not until they get some grass on the fairways & rough.
Dry
The drought has taken it's toll on the Mountain course. Still a great course with great greens. The fairways are basically dirt now. The Valley course is in slightly better condition. I would still choose the Ranch over any other public course in the area.
poor condition
Horrible fairway condition we played totally on dirt on this course. Green fee $75 waste your money believe me.
Course condition
This is horrible condition totally no grass on fairway I was played on dirt every hole on 4&5. It's $75 green fee waste my money.
RR Valley
Played the Blues (6469/72.4/139) using Forelinx in 4H, 25M as a 3some mid day with Don & Dave. The weather was nice for golf, clear, occasionally breezy in the high 70's.
The tees have good coverage, somewhat lush, somewhat thin with most divots already filled in.
The fairways are thin, with extreme amounts of roll overall. Inside the 150 marker they were a combination of thin and almost lush in places. Only holes 9 & 18 are regularly watered and are green, the other fairways are mostly golden brown.
The rough around the fairways are mostly hardpan. The rough around the greens was much lusher but mowed down and was usually good to chip out of.
The fairway bunkers were hard packed and good to play out of. The green side bunkers were very nicely maintained with high quality sand.
The greens overall putted nice, medium fast. Few ball marks, smooth, firm but held approach shots well.
Beautiful clubhouse and the customer service from everyone I encountered was excellent. Particular shout out to Errol, who was a wealth of information. No Beverage cart today.
This is a course that forces you to hit shorter clubs off 4-5 different par 4 tees because of either tightness or hazards that require you to hit it no farther than "X" distance. The layout on the front has multiple par 4's that are layup holes and in course out of bounds between holes 5/6. I like the layout on the back better.
Tough course because almost every shot has red hazard penalty stroke areas both left and right, the high rating/slope is justified. This course would be challenging to walk, fairly hilly and spread out. Several holes have severe elevation changes. Recommended = Only if you are willing to put up with poor fairways & rough.
RR Mountain
Played the Blues (6172/70.5/131) in 3H early morning as a single using Forelinx. The weather was chilly and calm. In the 50's when I teed off, in the 70's by the time I finished.
The tees were in good shape, more thin than lush with almost all divots properly maintained.
The fairways are terrible. TERRIBLE! I have been rating these recently as a 1/10, today becomes the very 1st fairway I have ever rated 0/10. Hardpan with extreme amounts of roll overall, some dormant grass and a few weeds.
The rough around the fairways is hardpan, you often could often not tell where the fairway ended and the rough started. The rough around the greens is usually decent and generally good to chip out of.
The fairway bunkers were hard packed and good to hit out of. The green side bunkers were very nicely maintained with nice quality sand.
The greens putted fast, were smooth, firm and held approach shots well.
The course layout is good, but many par 4's will probably not be driver holes for most players. Constantly up/down hills and many holes have severe elevation changes. This course would be extremely challenging to walk. The customer service from everyone I encountered was excellent as usual. No beverage cart today. There are adequate water stations on the course. Beautiful clubhouse.
I had an Okay hotdog with chips and a drink for $10 @ the snack shop. That is at least 50% more than it was worth, which is about the same as the "value" you currently get from the golf course. The greens are really nice and it's a fun layout. However I would not pay even $20 to play this course in these conditions. Not recommended until they get grass on their fairways.
RR Mountain
Played the Blues (6172/70.5/131) in 3H early morning as a single using Forelinx. The weather was chilly and calm. Around 40 when I teed off up to the low 50's when I finished.
The tees were in good shape, more thin than lush with almost all divots properly maintained.
The fairways are very poor, hardpan.
The rough around the fairways is basically hardpan, you often could often not tell where the fairway ended and the rough started. The rough around the greens is usually lush and generally good to chip out of.
The fairway bunkers were hard packed and good to hit out of. The green side bunkers were very nicely maintained with nice quality sand.
The greens putted medium fast, were smooth, firm and held approach shots well.
This course would be very challenging to walk, constantly up/down hills. The course layout is good, many holes on this course have severe elevation changes. Many par 4's will probably not be driver holes for most players. The beverage cart was out making rounds and there are adequate water stations on the course. The customer service from everyone I encountered was excellent as usual. Beautiful clubhouse. If you can get a deal and are willing to put up with ridiculous amounts of roll, the greens are really nice. Fun layout, but the conditions certainly do not justify anything close to rack rate. Not recommended until they get some grass on their fairways.
Horrific fairways
The course was completely dried out and played like a dirt field. Would likely be very nice if it had any grass on the fairways to stop the ball and allow a decent lie but that was far from the case. Paid $60 per person and felt like that was $50 too much.
Poor conditions
The drought has left no grass left on the fairways. Every shot on the fairways is on dirt!
Valley @ RR
Played the Blues (6469/72.4/139) using the Forelinx prepaid Membership in 4H, 10M as a 3some mid morning with Jim & Sharon visiting from Az. The weather was nice for golf, clear & breezy, high 60's, low 70's.
Several tees could use leveling, I had to move several times to find a good lie/stance. Usually lush with most divots already filled in once you pick the right location.
The fairways are thin, with extreme amounts of roll overall. Starting around the 150, they were a combination of thin and almost lush in places. Only holes 9 & 18 are regularly watered and are green, the other fairways are mostly golden brown.
The rough around the fairways was mostly hardpan. The rough around the greens was fairly lush but mowed down and was usually good to chip out of. Having almost no rough with hard ground means that getting the ball to stop on a hilly course is a constant challenge, because the only thing to stop your ball is often the closest hazard.
The fairway bunkers were like waste bunkers, hard packed but Okay to play out of except for the abundance of rocks. The green side bunkers were mostly good, nicely maintained with good quality sand. Good sand in the middle of the bunkers, thin around the edges.
The greens were very good. Few ball marks, smooth, putted medium fast, firm but held approach shots well.
This course would be challenging to walk, fairly hilly. Several holes have severe elevation changes. This is a course that forces you to hit shorter clubs on 4-5 different par 4 tees because of either tightness, hazards or both that require you to hit it no farther than "X" distance. The layout on the front has multiple par 4's that are layup holes and in course out of bounds between holes 5/6. I like the layout on the back better. Tough course because almost every shot has red hazard penalty stroke areas both left and right. Beautiful clubhouse and the customer service from everyone I encountered was excellent.
The course overall is in mediocre condition because the fairways and rough are mostly hardpan. Which is sad, because this is one of the more demanding layouts in Southern California. Recommended = Only if you are willing to put up with poor fairways & rough.
Needs to become desert course with landing areas
Because of drought the fairway conditions are non existant. At least water some of the landing areas.
I would not play here again unless they have much needed rain or the fairways have watered landing areas.
RR Valley
Played the Blues (6469/72.4/139) in 3H, 20M as a 2some this A.M. with Josh using the Forelinx prepaid Membership. The weather was clear & WINDY, high 50's, low 60's. We were clubbing up 3 clubs when going into the wind. The combination of wind and thin fairways made for some of the more challenging conditions I have ever tried to score in. Hit it in the air and the swirling wind would knock it down or take it places you don't want golf balls to visit. Punch it low and it would roll forever on the hardpan, which could also bring into play places golf balls are not meant to visit.
The course overall is in mediocre condition because the fairways and rough are very thin.
The tees were in good shape, usually lush with most divots already filled in. Several could use leveling.
Overall, the fairways are thin, with extreme amounts of roll. Starting around the 150, they were a combination of thin and almost lush in places.
The rough around the fairways was thin, mostly hardpan. Getting the ball to stop on a hilly course was a constant challenge, because on hilly holes your ball can take a slope and go ? The rough around the greens was fairly lush but mowed down and was usually good to chip out of.
The fairway bunkers were like waste bunkers, hard packed but Okay to play out of except for the abundance of rocks. The green side bunkers were mostly good, nicely maintained with good quality sand. With the swirling winds, I was in 6 total. 4/6 where I was in the middle of the trap was good, 2/6 where I was closer to the edge of the trap was thin, both times my club bounced off the hard surface underneath.
The greens were very good. Fairly smooth, putted medium fast, firm but held approach shots well.
This course would be challenging to walk, fairly hilly. The layout on the front is quirky for my taste, multiple par 4's that are layup holes and in course out of bounds between holes 5/6. I like the layout on the back better. Several holes have severe elevation changes. This is a course that forces you to hit shorter clubs on 4-5 different par 4 tees because of either tightness or hazards that require you to hit it no farther than "X" distance. Tough course because almost every shot has red hazard penalty stroke areas both left and right. Beautiful clubhouse and the customer service from everyone I encountered was excellent. Recommended = Only if you are willing to put up with poor fairways & rough.
Your critique was that "The fairways are basically dirt now. ", yet you rate this course 5 stars? Excellent clubhouse and course design, but in my opinion, the on course conditions (other than the greens) are poor to terrible.
