Sand Canyon Country Club
About
The Valley is one of two 18-hole golf courses at Robinson Ranch. As the name would imply, the course is tucked into the Santa Clarita Valley next to the Los Angeles National Forest. California Sycamores, coastal live oaks, and stands of sage and chaparral blanket both golf courses. Scenic waterfalls further enhance the beautiful landscape and they also come into play throughout, most notably on the Valley's finishing hole. The Valley is the original layout at Robinson Ranch. It is not as hilly and plays more like a championship golf course than the shorter Mountain Course. Several elevated tees are incorporated into the design to take advantage of the stunning mountains views. The traditional layout combines both desert-style holes with holes that more tree lined. It offers an interesting variety of challenged including doglegs, sand traps strategically placed along the landing zones, and well protected, multi-tiered greens.

Ruined by the drought restrictions
Played the Mountain course, first time for about 3 years and sadly, due to the drought restrictions on water the course can be almost unplayable, even for low handicap golfers. Greens are superb as alway, tees decent, BUT the fairways are brown, dry and rock hard, so virtually impossible to control the run of the ball, and with many holes elevated, the downward ones are virtually impossible to hit and stay on ..... they will roll on and on like concrete until something stops the roll. its very possible to drive the ball 400 yards on several holes and equally possible to hit a perfect drive straight down the middle and its ends up rolling off into a bush and a penalty drop.
Don't like to be critical as this golfing facility is superb overall and it appears the Valley course is in much better shape as gets more of the water % to keep the fairways green.
Can wait for El Nino to kick in and help this place return to its former glory because as i said, overall this is one of the best golf resorts in the area
RR Mountain
Played the Blues (6172/70.5/131) in 2H, 45M late afternoon as a single. The weather was windy and in the 50's.
This course would be very challenging to walk, constantly up/down hills. The course layout is good even though target golf is not normally my cup of tea. Many holes on this course have severe elevation changes. Many par 4's will probably not be driver holes for most players.
The tees were in very good shape, usually lush with most divots properly maintained.
The fairways are very poor, hardpan. The amount of roll was extreme going down hills.
The rough around the fairways was almost non existent, you could often not tell where the fairway ended and the rough started. The rough around the greens is usually lush and generally good to chip out of.
The fairway bunkers were like waste bunkers, hard packed with rocks in them. The green side bunkers were very nicely maintained with nice quality sand.
The greens putted medium fast, were smooth, firm and held approach shots well. Be very cautious with downhill putts!
The beverage cart was out making rounds and there are adequate water stations on the course. The customer service from everyone I encountered was excellent as usual. Beautiful clubhouse. If you can get a deal and are willing to put up with ridiculous amounts of roll, the greens are really nice. Fun layout, but the conditions certainly do not justify anything close to rack rate.
RR Valley
Played the Blues (6469/72.4/139) in 3H as a 2some with Chuck this A.M. using the Forelinx prepaid Membership. The weather was overcast & in the 40's when I teed off and was in the low 50's when I finished.
This course would be challenging to walk, fairly hilly. The layout on the front is a little quirky for my taste, multiple par 4's that are layup holes. I like the layout on the back better. Several holes have severe elevation changes. This is a course that forces you to hit shorter clubs on 4-5 different par 4 tees because of either tightness or hazards that require you to hit it no farther than "X" distance.
The course overall was in better condition than I experienced 2 weeks ago, especially the greens.
The tees were in very good shape, usually lush with most divots already filled in. Several could use leveling.
The fairways were hit and miss. Overall, they are thin, with extreme amounts of roll. Starting around the 150, they were a combination of thin and almost lush in places.
The rough around the fairways was thin. Getting the ball to stop on a hilly course was a constant challenge, because on hilly holes your ball can take a slope and go ? The rough around the greens was fairly lush but mowed down and was usually good to chip out of.
The fairway bunkers were like waste bunkers, hard packed but Okay to play out of. The green side bunkers were excellent, nicely maintained with good quality sand.
The greens were much better than 2 weeks ago, they were excellent! Smooth, putted medium fast, firm but held approach shots well.
While there are numerous excellent golf holes on the Valley, they are canceled out by several quirky ones when I rate the design in my mind. Excellent clubhouse and the customer service from everyone I encountered was exemplary. Recommended = Yes, if you are willing to put up with mediocre fairways & rough.
RR Mountain
Played the Blues (6172/70.5/131) in 3H as a single this A.M. using the Forelinx prepaid Membership. The weather was partly cloudy in the 70's. Everything was set up perfectly and I was on the 1st tee shortly after checking in.
The course layout is good, I like the Mountain course overall better than the Valley @ Robinson Ranch. This course would be very challenging to walk, constantly up/down hills. Many holes have severe elevation changes.
This is a course where I was frequently hitting irons off many par 4 tees, partially because of the tight layout, partially because of the course conditions. There was nothing about this course condition that was average. The tees, greens and green side traps were all above average to excellent... the fairways, rough and fairway bunkers were all below average to poor.
The tees were in excellent shape, lush with most divots already filled in.
The fairways were about as thin as I have ever played, the amount of roll was extreme going down hills. The lies were always tight, but it was playable and consistent. Consistent in that the thin turf still covered almost all the ground, I was rarely hitting off of dirt, which is surprising considering how thin the grass was. Depending on how much slope the fairway had, I 1st ruled out driver and after a couple of 3 irons rolled out too far, finally settled on 5 iron as a good club to tee off with on many of the shorter par 4's. Even with lush fairways, my driver would still stay in the bag on many of these par 4's.
The rough (other than around the greens) was almost non existent, you could often not tell where the fairway ended and the rough started. The huge problem with this is that on a hilly course you cannot stop the ball and it will take a slope and run into trouble. The rough around the greens was fairly lush but mowed down and was usually good to chip out of.
The sand traps almost need separate reviews. The fairway bunkers were like waste bunkers, hard packed with rocks, not pebbles in them. However, the green side bunkers were very nicely maintained with nice quality sand.
The greens were good to very good, definitely above average. Fairly smooth, firm but held approach shots well and putted medium fast.
Excellent clubhouse and the customer service from everyone I encountered was exemplary. Overall, the conditions were better than I expected based on prior reviews. I look forward to playing here again. Even with very thin fairways, the greens and the layout kept it interesting and fun.
RR Valley
Played the Blues (6469/72.4/139) in 3H this P.M. using the Forelinx prepaid Membership. Played 9 as a single, then was joined on the back by Ron, a RR member. The weather was partly cloudy in the 70's. Everything was set up beforehand and I was on the 1st tee shortly after checking in.
1st time playing this course in 6 years. The front has multiple par 4's that are layup holes, too many in my opinion. For that reason, I like the course layout on the back better than the front because it only has 1 par 4 like that. This course would be challenging to walk, fairly hilly. Several holes have severe elevation changes.
This is a course that forces you to hit shorter clubs on 4-5 different par 4 tees because of either tightness or hazards that require you to hit it no farther than "X" distance. The condition extremes were not as bad as the Mountain course, but the same things that were good on the Mountain were also good here... The tees, greens and green side traps were all above average, just not as good overall as the Mountain. And the fairways, rough and fairway bunkers were all below average, just not as bad overall as the Mountain.
The tees were in very good shape, usually lush with most divots already filled in. Several could use leveling however.
The fairways were more hit and miss. I was told they water 9 & 18 fairways to keep them green for wedding backdrops... and those 2 holes are lush from tee to green. The rest of the fairways I was told they only water them from 150 yards and in. So from the tee to the 150 marker, they are very thin, with extreme amounts of roll. Starting around the 150, they were a combination of thin and almost lush in places.
The rough around the greens was fairly lush but mowed down and was usually good to chip out of. The rough around the fairways was thin. Getting the ball to stop on a hilly course was a constant challenge, because on hilly holes your ball can take a slope and go ?
The green side bunkers were very nicely maintained with nice quality sand. The fairway bunkers were like waste bunkers, hard packed but Okay to play out of.
The greens were good to putt on and are probably 95% recovered from aeration 3+ weeks ago. Occasionally bumpy, putted medium speed, firm but held approach shots well.
Excellent clubhouse and the customer service from everyone I encountered was exemplary. Overall, the conditions were better than I expected based on prior reviews. While there are numerous excellent golf holes on the Valley, they are canceled out by several quirky ones when I rate the design in my mind. However, I look forward to playing here again because it's a very challenging course (hence the 139 slope from the Blues), even if the layout is not my cup of tea.
RR Mountain
Played the Blues (6172/70.5/131) in 2H, 50M as a single this A.M. The weather was in the 70's, partly cloudy and breezy.
Many holes have severe elevation changes, and the thin fairways going downhill produce some ridiculously long shots. I like the course layout, you definitely need to think about your next shot before you hit this shot more so that most courses because of the hilly terrain. This course would be VERY challenging to walk, constantly up/down hills. Numerous shorter par 4's where driver is not the play for longer hitters unless you can thread the needle on small landing zones AND then keep it from rolling into trouble.
The tees were in very good shape, lush with most divots already filled in.
The fairways are flat out thin. You definitely have to take club selection + roll into account because the amount of roll was extreme. Example, I hit a 3 Iron on #11, which is a downhill 339 par 4 from the blues, playing for position... and ended up 20 yards from the green after it took the slope and rolled forever. The fairway lies ares tight, but playable the more I got used to them.
The fairway "rough" is almost non existent, there is barely a demarcation between the fairway and the rough. Better take that into account on club selection, because there is nothing to stop anything offline except the native sage bushes in the plentiful red lateral hazards just past the rough. The rough around the greens was fairly lush but mowed down and was usually good to chip out of.
The fairway bunkers here are hard packed. Many had rocks in them that I removed to keep from damaging my clubs. The green side bunkers were soft, very nicely maintained with nice quality sand.
The greens were firm & putted medium fast, fairly smooth, and held approach shots well.
Challenging, fun layout that can come up and bite you quickly if you miss your targets. Both holes I birdied my previous round here I tripled this round, and some holes that gave me trouble last time I parred this round. There is PLENTY of trouble lurking around every hole to keep you honest and focused. Beautiful clubhouse and the customer service from everyone I encountered was exceptional. Recommended IF you can tolerate very thin fairways.
Staff
They trying to help gofers and guide better and very kind.
Also very professional. Highly recommend.
Terrible fairways and rough
Just finished playing the mountain course and this was my first and possibly the last.
Pros- tee box and greens slightly above average. It appears the greens were punched a week ago but the greens were rolling nice. Tee boxes were decent as well.
Cons- no yardage books or hole layout given. About half of the holes were blind tee shots which made it a guessing game. Luckily I only lost 1 ball the whole round. Fairways were terrible!!! I guess it is due to the drought but the fairways were dried out it felt like playing on dirt with some thin dried weeds. There was no rough either!!
Luckily I paid the hot deal rate, otherwise I would be really disappointed with the value of the course. I would never play here if I had to pay the full weekend rate.
Great
Love the course but lack of water taking a toll. Had to hit off of really hard dirt on way to many fairways.
Poor condition due to the drought
There are only two holes that the fair ways are decent. The rest of the course is like playing in hard pan, they are completely bared. The ball landed on the fairway but could roll 50 Ft out of bounds. The greens are fine except there were punched holes no long ago. I have to say that the staffs were very friendly and nice.
stay away from the mountain course
stay away from the mountain course... although the valley course was in a much better shape, the mountain course had barren fairways with no grass, I repeat, no grass, on the fairway. I heard through the grape vine that the mountain course will be neglected, and possibly be used as tracks for new homes. Perhaps that is the reason why it is neglected. Then the course description must state that the Fairway has no grass. I don't think the drought is the issue since, as I said, the valley course visibly had grass on the fairways. So stay away from the Mountain course.
Like to play
I do like to play this course it is a good challenge, just the conditions were not as good as I hoped for. The grass is doormeed and the fairways were bare. Still had a good time though.
Course Condition Was Really Band to play
The Design of Courses are very challenging and nice.
However, the condition of courses are very bad to enjoy golf.
Fairway condition is really bad at valley course.
The fairway grass are mostly dead so it is hard to stop the ball if you use the driver. There are many runs.
I do not recommend this courses if you will play with $55
I will not play as long as the condition of golf courses will be better.
In one word, do not play golf at this course
Course in horrible condition!!!
Course is in horrible shape! After teeing off on the first hole and hitting my ball in the "fairway", we realized we made a huge mistake in playing here. It was only made worse when we noticed that they had recently punched the greens. Neither GolfNow nor Robinson Ranch notified us of this before hand. If we would have known, there is no way I would have spent $60 to play this course! Total waste of money and time. Staff was very friendly and the facilities were great aside from the range which looked like most of the fairways.
Very difficult course
Wow I had heard it could be very frustrating before I went out but it was just very challenging. I'm a bogey player averaging 88-92 most of the times and I hit 98 losing a few balls into the valley... :(
Fairways are narrow and due to the curvature of mountains, the visibility was limited in many holes.
The grass is multifocal brown and all the greens were punched so I didn't enjoy it in that regard.
Once the greens heal, I will certainly come back to challenge this again.
Just take it easy on your swings, especially your drivers and long irons. If you are kind of person who hits as hard as possible, you'd better bring 10+ balls because you WILL lose plenty of balls if you're about same or worse handicappers than me.
Do not play! No grass in fairways
Played this course a ton growing up and it was fantastic. I just played it for the first time in years and it is in horrible condition. Tee boxes are average, greens are still great, but the fairways are DIRT. Hole 1 was ok ish. Hole 2, I hit 2 iron down the middle and was in dirt. Hole 4, I hit 335 yard drive in the fairway and again I was in dirt. Same with 5 and 6. I walked off the course. Hole 9 looked very nice, so I played it. It did have grass in the fairway. Do no waste your time until they start watering the grass again.
NO grass on the fairways and around most greens
Played this course a 100 times when I worked there 10 years ago... It used to be fantastic, but now they have stopped watering the course. The fairways are horrible! I walked off the course after about 7 holes. Hole 1 was ok ish... Hole 2 I hit 2 iron in the fairway and second shot in dirt. Hole 4, I hit a 335 yard drive in the fairway and I was hitting on dirt. Same with 5 and 6. I called it a day after that, but did play hole 9. Nicest hole on the front. There was grass in the fairway. Greens are still in great shape, but until they start watering the course, do not bother.
Robinson Ranch Valley Course
Great golf course and very friendly staff inside the pro shop. The course is challenging and an enjoyment.
Needs water!
Nice course but they lost some kind of water rights. So the fairways are totally burned. I mean,,,crusted sand..."West Texas Conditions". The layout is good and the greens are excellent. We enjoyed the round, but playing off scorched earth take a little practice.
