Sand Canyon Country Club
About
The Valley is one of two 18-hole golf courses at Robinson Ranch. As the name would imply, the course is tucked into the Santa Clarita Valley next to the Los Angeles National Forest. California Sycamores, coastal live oaks, and stands of sage and chaparral blanket both golf courses. Scenic waterfalls further enhance the beautiful landscape and they also come into play throughout, most notably on the Valley's finishing hole. The Valley is the original layout at Robinson Ranch. It is not as hilly and plays more like a championship golf course than the shorter Mountain Course. Several elevated tees are incorporated into the design to take advantage of the stunning mountains views. The traditional layout combines both desert-style holes with holes that more tree lined. It offers an interesting variety of challenged including doglegs, sand traps strategically placed along the landing zones, and well protected, multi-tiered greens.

Parched course
The Mountain course that we booked with a very low special rate has completely dry fairways with no grass.
I think that players need to be properly warned that the low online rate is because the course is completely dry , brown and has no grass on the fairways.
We complained and were moved to the Valley course which was also dry but very playable and we had a great experience.
This is normally one of my favorite course in non drought times
Drought battered fairways
Lack of water has hurt the fairways and grass around the greens. The greens however are perfect. Fast and true.
Disappointed
Fairways were dead, dry and hard making your ball roll out of bounds. It was 106 degrees and we were told there was a cart girl, but we never saw her. The only good thing was that they cleaned our clubs when we were finished.
no grass
no water no grass
only tee box n green is ok
all fairway is no grass play like on the practice mat.
furthermore, they did not mention it.
Review of Valley Course
The day I played there were very few golfers on the course so I did not play with anyone. I would have rather played with at least one other player.
Regarding the condition of the course, I believe it was in poor condition other than the greens which were in excellant condition. The pace of the greens was a little faster than the average pace of public golf course greens but were very fair in terms of the modest slopes on them. The fairways were a completely different story. It looked like they were very seldom watered and finding grass and a clean lie in the fairway was next to impossible. This may be due to the water shortage in Cali. I would make a few changes such as taking the tree out of the middle of the 9th fairway which comes into play on the tee shot would be one of the changes I would make.
Over all, I very much liked the layout. There were plenty of interesting holes. It is a good test for a mid range handicaper. I happen to be a 12 handicap.
I was told that the Valley Course was in better condition than the Mountain Course. If that is true, I would hate to play on the Mountain Course.
In short, management needs to figure out a way to get more water on the fairways before I could recommend this golf course.
Avoid at all cost!
This course should be embarrassed with the condition of their fairways. It is like hitting off of concrete. Which is really too bad because the greens are amazing. Tee boxs are the only place on the course with grass, and they don't cut them. Tee boxs had about 2 inches of growth which makes it difficult to tee your ball to the proper height, leading to mid hits. I was one of the only players on the entire course and now I know why. After playing all over Southern Ca this summer, this was the absolute worst. I wouldn't play here for free. Waste of my time.
Wait for el nino
The drought has really taken a toll on this course. The greens and tee boxes are OK. The fairways are terrible. We paid 60 per player. Should have been half that. Stay away and wait for the rain to come.
course is dead
The condition of the course is horrible, everything except the greens are dead.
Not good
Fairways are in terrible condition, this use to be a great course
This course need water
Weather was so good... And little bit windy but the course needs water.... I was feel sorry for all the courses that getting super dry...
Kind of sad...
I have played both courses several times and considered this one of my favorite places to golf when I visit my family in SoCal. The greens are in decent shape, but unfortunately, that's the only positive. I paid for 18 and only played 9. That's how upsetting it was. I saw someone drive their cart up to the green and no one said anything about it. The staff is still one of the friendliest you'll ever encounter. I'm afraid they're fighting a losing battle until drought conditions get better.
Great Course, but a little dry due to drought
The Fairways are a little dry, good news for your drive, but not great for your short game. Greens were great though, even a little fast. Overall good experience and i will definitely go back again.
Great layout and staff
The only thing wrong at this time is the drought. The fairways are horrible.
I have played here when it was watered and it is and can be again one of the best coarse a in Santa Clarits.
Let's hope for rain.
worst golf course.....
It was hot deal ... but we never satisfied price and condition of golf course.
I think play golf mean is play on the Grass... but the course fairway s are just dirt ground. no grass at all.
Even my club got a scratched cause little stones on the fairway.
Ether Robinson ranch or Golfnow should have to let customer know what kind of course condition are.
Over all.... It was worst golf course ever I've played.
the mountain course at robinson ranch
the greens were fabulous the fairways were hard and brown and white impossible to get the ball launched due ti the water shortage
Do not play!
The course has discontinued watering anything except the tee box and green areas. There is no watering being done to the fairways and I was not able to locate a blade of grass on one of them except 9 and 18 which you oversee from the clubhouse. Worst golf conditions I have ever played. Don't do it to yourself!!!!
No Grass. Extreme disappointment.
Well, both my partner and I played for the first time at RR and what a terrible disappointment. The clubhouse is nice. The staff was great. The beer was ICE cold. LIke that. But you simply cannot avoid the elephant in the room. The course (Mountain) was just in awful shape. Yes, the tee boxes and greens are green, but that is it.
I hit a lot of fairways and had nothing but hard pan dirt for all of my lies. I just can't fathom how you let a course get this bad.
The fees do not reflect how poor the course is. I've played beat up little 9 hole courses in the city that are greener. Although I guess some grass is more than no grass.
I cannot imagine coming back unless massive changes were made. I did like the layout of some holes, but golf is meant to be played off grass.
Drout effects at their worst
Thought I was getting a decent deal on a course that I've played many times, that I think is typically overpriced. Was excited because it's usually a great course in great condition, until I got there. Dead, dead, dead.
I was supposed to play the Mountain Course which was complete hard pan everywhere but the greens and tee boxes. I opted to pay an extra $20 for the Valley course that was only Slightly better. 2 holes had grass in the fairways, the others with a couple spots at best. Greens were very firm, but true.
Thankfully I hit the ball very straight that day or I'd have been really unhappy. The average golfer would be blowing through every fairway in one direction or another. I had multiple drives that rolled 340yds-383yds. A couple times I lost balls on absolutely perfect drives down the pipe. Very difficult conditions.
I don't recommend playing here unless you really want to challenge yourself, or we start getting some rain to fill their reservoir because they do not get water from the state.
Totally Brown and Dead Grass Fairways
My first time playing Robinson Ranch. The website indicated that the Valley Course was in better condition than the Mountain Course. Nice layout, and great views. All of the fairways were completely brown and the grass was dead except for 9 and 18. Every lie in the fairway was hard pan. Greens and tee boxes were green and alive. Will not return until they (1) start watering the course or (2) there is significant rainfall, and even then the grass may not come back given it's current condition.
