Sand Canyon Country Club
About
The Valley is one of two 18-hole golf courses at Robinson Ranch. As the name would imply, the course is tucked into the Santa Clarita Valley next to the Los Angeles National Forest. California Sycamores, coastal live oaks, and stands of sage and chaparral blanket both golf courses. Scenic waterfalls further enhance the beautiful landscape and they also come into play throughout, most notably on the Valley's finishing hole. The Valley is the original layout at Robinson Ranch. It is not as hilly and plays more like a championship golf course than the shorter Mountain Course. Several elevated tees are incorporated into the design to take advantage of the stunning mountains views. The traditional layout combines both desert-style holes with holes that more tree lined. It offers an interesting variety of challenged including doglegs, sand traps strategically placed along the landing zones, and well protected, multi-tiered greens.

Robinson Ranch Valley Par 5 18th Photo submitted by hacksalot03 on 12/29/2012
Drought conditions have taken a toll.
Robinson Ranch has two nice 18-hole courses in a beautiful countryside setting. I've played both of these courses back when the water restrictions were not as severe and they are fun to play. Unfortunately, the drought conditions have taken a severe toll on the course. Greens are still kept in good shape but the fairways are almost completely dead, with the exception of #9 and #18 which I believe they keep up for appearances. There were many times where a perfect drive down the middle resulted in a second shot being played off hard dirt. It's not fair to hold the course responsible for the water shortage. However, I do feel that the $70 green fees and $60 twilight rates are too high given the course condition. That's my chief complaint. The course is not worth that kind of green fee in these conditions. Hopefully our water issues in California will eventually improve and the course can be maintained the way that it deserves. When that happens, then I'll give the course better ratings.
A welcome challenge
The course was surprisingly empty for a holiday weekend. The price was a great value even though the fairways are dried out due to the drought. The valley course is fairly straight forward on the front nine but gets more challenging on the back nine and demands accuracy off the tees. I enjoyed it and will be back soon. I enjoyed the extras like free range balls, and carts that have ice coolers built into them. Very well run and professionally managed.
It's not the same Robinson Ranch
I understand that we have a drought in California, But I had know idea that I would be playing off dirt. This was the worst course I ever played. If they had been honest about the course and gave the players a discount, I would have still played and respect them for being open. I will never ever, ever play at Roberson Ranch again. I will also tell all of my friends to not to play there. I give Robinson Ranch a Negative Four Stars.
Awesome
Very challenging course. With the drought in CA the watering on the Mountain Course must be limited, because the fairways were super fast, and off colored. No matter the condition, Robinson Ranch is, and has been one of my top 5 in LA County. It played more links style due to condition, and I love links golf. I would say that the staff is doing a fantastic job with the resources they have, and I will play there any and every chance I get.
this course has great mountain view.
Staff and facilities are great and very very friendly ever. But the weather was scorcher and humidly at that time.
And the course condition was really really bad because turf was dried, died and very hard on the grass and fairway.
The grass need water but Californiawide have problem to solve this.
I enjoyed to play but I am unhappy after that.
Unhappy with golf course.
I have to wait too long to play.
It's hard to find the yardage as well.
Summer conditions
Course was excellent - greens on great shape- rough lived up to its name- fairways - although dry- resulted in increased roll for longer drives... This is an enjoyable and fun course - I recommend it highly.
Drought Conditions
Because of the severe drought, this course is not playable. The fairways are fried, no rough to stop your ball from going into bad places. Great shots are not rewarded. Greens and tee boxes are in good shape but the rest of the course has been battered by the drought.
Dry fairways
With some water the coarse will come back. Current conditions do not support the $65 green fees. We played both the Valley and the Mountain coarse and left disappointed.
Fairway is not maintained enough
The greens conditions are all good but the fairways are very bare ground and hard.
It's easy to lose your balls as it rolles a lot.
conditions were better than expected
Course conditions were better than expected after reading the other reviews. The greens were perfect! The fairways were about 50% green, most of the landing and approach areas had grass. Played two balls off the tee, practiced around the greens and still finished in 3 hours and 15 minutes. Beautiful course worth the $60 Golfnow rate
Drought Obvious on Mountain Course
One of my favorite golf clubs in the LA area but taking a pounding from the drought. The Mountain Course fairways are basically just hard-pack dry dirt; Valley looked like it was getting a little more love. Greens were still in good shape. RR might want to consider going down to one track and focusing their water use while the drought persists...
Drought conditions at Robinson Ranch
I have played Robinson Ranch courses many times, both the Mountain and Valley courses. But I probably haven't played there in the past 6 months. It was always a beautifully maintained course with very good fairways, excellent greens, and challenging holes in the past. When I made the reservation a few days ago at $60 per person, I was surprised since that is similar to Los Angeles public golf course pricing. Well, I guess because of severe water and/or budget restrictions, managment has stopped watering the Mountain course that we played. I did not look at the Valley course so I can't comment. However, I can say that we did not see a single blade of green grass between the tee box and the greens on any of the 18 holes we played. This is not just dormant grass, the fairways are completely dead, dry, and hard as an airport runway. It makes for entertaingly long drives as the ball just bounds forward on concrete like fairways, but is not representative of real golf course conditions. We won't be playing there again until conditions improve.
Not returning soon
I used to love this course, but with the drought, it is very dry and dusty. What little water they have is rightly used on the tee boxes and greens, but the hard and dry fairways with no rough make this course nearly unplayable for average golfers.
No grass on the fairways on mountain course
The fairways on the mountain course were completely brown and dead -- the entire course. Obviously they have stopped watering. There's no rough either, to keep the ball from leaving the playing area and entering deep brush or worse. The greens and tee boxes were excellent. Wish I had been warned about these conditions before booking 3 golfers for the round. Would suggest playing the Valley course, or play elsewhere.
Don't waste your money
They are having serious water issues here. The Valley course is still in so so shape. Let's start with the dirt fairways that haven't seen water in weeks. The greens are good but that is because that is the only thing on the mountain course that gets water. It really should be closed. Any price to play the mountain course it too much. Staff is super friendly tho. It just too bad the owner is so cheap and won't put money in to this gem to bring it back to what it once was!!
Drought play
The greens are the best part of the play. The course offers great opportunity for a wonderful round of golf, just to bad that Southern CA. Is in a drought, the course could use a steady drink, fairways and rough are extremely dry and hard pack.
Pace of play plus poor course conditions
They stop watering fairways. It's like playing on a diet road. There is no rough. Marshals are horrible, we were stuck behind these four Asian guys who had no one infront of them for 3-4 holes , complained 3 times... Nothing Happened. Will never play here again. Los Robles, Tierra rejada, and rustic canyon are much much better.
