Fair course
Mostly wide open fairways with occasional tree trouble, few traps, average size greens and one water hazard. Average quality overall and not my favorite kind of course as thin lies are the rule this time of year.
Best Course near Elk Grove
Course is in great shape and far more challenging than Wildhawk and in better condition.
Hardpan hard to manage
The fairways are mostly wide open outlined with trees but challenging in length. There are a lot areas of thin grass and tough lies. The traps are decent with a fair amount of give. There's really only one hole where water comes into play. The greens are dry but roll true so you get a fair chance to score. There's wild turkey everywhere but that's all I ever see for wildlife. There's periodic water buckets and an outhouse on the back 9 only, no other restrooms on the course. On this day I got a great $12 Hot Deal so I was glad to come out but it's not one of my favorite courses. Nice people but It's tough conditions when there's hardpan soil.
Comfortable Challenge
2nd time on this course, I'm impressed with the staff that always make you feel welcome and were very helpful concerning course conditions and which T's would suit my play. Rode the course the first time and this time I walked the course. Moderate walk, pace was great.
Warm up range is grass which I like and always in good shape.
I usually look at the course length and slope to determine which Tees to play. All courses give you this information.
Hidden gem
Mather is an established track with a variety of tees, amenities and scenery. Jets are everywhere and the staff is super friendly what else can you ask for?
I would ask them to punch the fairways, lay some top dressing and water. The hardpan thin lies are no fun.
Mather Interesting
I will start with staff friendliness and cold water EVERYWHERE. All over course they have cold water double barreled on some holes front tees and back! Good food and drink too. Nice touch to a very nice, Donald Ross like design course with fewer sand traps in my opinion...he has only one course on the west coast, that being Peninsula CC in San Mateo built in the 20's. That said, this Mather course is fabulous. Love the aircraft golf carts which I took advantage of on my second round replay after a nice walk. Last three holes are awesome, as is the entire back nine. It has a long touch to it, straight mostly which lets you bomb away to wedges in if you want, and two dog leg lefts on back asking for more. Front plays straight all 9 holes, with short to low mid irons in. You will bomb away with 3 wood and 5 wood too on the par 5. Tees, fairways are good. Greens and pin positions are great. Approach shots are right in front of you and fun to hit at. Looking at pins from tees nearby was visibly what golf is all about. They put pins in right spots to make it interesting. Its rare to have a simple, walk-able layout be that good in Sacramento. Play Mather.
New to Golf; staff very friendly
Had a good time with a friend playing this course. I'm new to golf so I always feel a little intimaadting when talking to stafff because I don't want to seem too much like a newbie! But they were helpful no problem whatsoever.
Enhoyable to play
After all the rain this year the couse has recovered quite well & is in very good condition. The course is challenging but fair for various levels of golfers.. The greens are kept in excellent condition, I've played the course several times it's an enjoyable course to play.
Pace of play
Course was in bad condition due to recent rain. I have played other courses in the area and they are able to mow in the area they can but Mather is not doing any maintenance. Group in front of us took 3 hours to play nine holes with no one in front of them but marshal just drove around on his cart.
Course is wet but staff warned us
When we arrived for our tee time, the man in the pro shop warned us that the fairways were muddy due to recent rain. The price was discounted as a result, and we decided to play anyway. The conditions were pretty bad, but we made the most of it. If the staff hadn't said anything, it would have been disappointing but since he told us we expected what we got. Until the course dries out, you won't get much roll on shots in the fairway. It's easy to lose a ball from getting embedded in the wet ground.
The course was in horrible condition
There should of been a warning on Golfnow about the horrible conditions at the course.
Not the best conditions
The fairways were in pretty bad shape - even if we hit onto the fairway it was still like an Easter egg hunt trying to find out foursome's balls. The group behind us made the same comment. The rough was extremely long and difficult to get out of. The greens themselves were in mediocre shape.
It's funny how two different people can play the same courses and have opposite opinions. I guess if you would rather play on dead weedy grass Mather would be your course of choice.
