Mather Interesting
I will start with staff friendliness and cold water EVERYWHERE. All over course they have cold water double barreled on some holes front tees and back! Good food and drink too. Nice touch to a very nice, Donald Ross like design course with fewer sand traps in my opinion...he has only one course on the west coast, that being Peninsula CC in San Mateo built in the 20's. That said, this Mather course is fabulous. Love the aircraft golf carts which I took advantage of on my second round replay after a nice walk. Last three holes are awesome, as is the entire back nine. It has a long touch to it, straight mostly which lets you bomb away to wedges in if you want, and two dog leg lefts on back asking for more. Front plays straight all 9 holes, with short to low mid irons in. You will bomb away with 3 wood and 5 wood too on the par 5. Tees, fairways are good. Greens and pin positions are great. Approach shots are right in front of you and fun to hit at. Looking at pins from tees nearby was visibly what golf is all about. They put pins in right spots to make it interesting. Its rare to have a simple, walk-able layout be that good in Sacramento. Play Mather.
New to Golf; staff very friendly
Had a good time with a friend playing this course. I'm new to golf so I always feel a little intimaadting when talking to stafff because I don't want to seem too much like a newbie! But they were helpful no problem whatsoever.
Enhoyable to play
After all the rain this year the couse has recovered quite well & is in very good condition. The course is challenging but fair for various levels of golfers.. The greens are kept in excellent condition, I've played the course several times it's an enjoyable course to play.
Pace of play
Course was in bad condition due to recent rain. I have played other courses in the area and they are able to mow in the area they can but Mather is not doing any maintenance. Group in front of us took 3 hours to play nine holes with no one in front of them but marshal just drove around on his cart.
Course is wet but staff warned us
When we arrived for our tee time, the man in the pro shop warned us that the fairways were muddy due to recent rain. The price was discounted as a result, and we decided to play anyway. The conditions were pretty bad, but we made the most of it. If the staff hadn't said anything, it would have been disappointing but since he told us we expected what we got. Until the course dries out, you won't get much roll on shots in the fairway. It's easy to lose a ball from getting embedded in the wet ground.
The course was in horrible condition
There should of been a warning on Golfnow about the horrible conditions at the course.
Not the best conditions
The fairways were in pretty bad shape - even if we hit onto the fairway it was still like an Easter egg hunt trying to find out foursome's balls. The group behind us made the same comment. The rough was extremely long and difficult to get out of. The greens themselves were in mediocre shape.
Fairway grass as long as normal first cut
Great course, greens were near perfect, sand in bunkers very playable. Hit countless tee shots in the middle of the fairway, problem was that the fairway was as long as the first cut should have been (any shot from the first cut you were not able to see your shoes). Anything just off the fairway was gone so if you didn't hit worm burners, any tee shot plugged. A LOT of previously mowed grass covered the fairways so it was almost like an 18 hole Easter egg hunt. Will absolutely play here again and hope the conditions will be better.
Unplayable With All The Water
It had been dry for about 5 days straight including 2 days in the sunshine with 70 degree temps. The course is SO wet from all the rain we have gotten that it's not even worth it to tee off. The staff told up about the conditions, but since I had driven about 30 min to get out there we gave it a go. It's too wet for them to mow, so even the fairways are at rough height. Seriously losing balls that you hit right down the middle because they plugged, and just walking out to the area where you think you landed was sucking the shoes off of our feet. I couldn't believe they would even let people out there to walk around. It will destroy the fairways. Anyway, I have played this course many times, and it's a decent track when it's dry. I would not go out there anytime soon.
Horrible conditions. Course was unplayable and should have been closed. Conditions were not revealed to us at time of booking. The long wet winter turned the fairways into "mud sponges" . When we checked-in we were given 15 extra balls and were told not to bother looking for our tee shots cause they'll probably plug and be unfindable. Just drop. They were right. could n't find a single one. Gave up after 9 and they refused to give us a rain check for the back 9.
Sloppy
The weather was great, the greens were nice and rolling true albeit a little slow. The fairways were too wet to play. Nice touch by the proshop to give out a generous handful of balls to loose, instead of loosing your own.
Not a course to play in the Winter.
The course is fine. It is flat and long. I played a day after a rainy day. This course does not drain! To their credit as I got to the course I was informed of that fact. I will avoid this course in the winter. Give it a try in the summer.
