Rio Vista Golf Club
About
The Golf Club at Rio Vista is situated at the heart of northern California. With a scenic spot near the Sacramento River Delta, the course is even named after its scenic river view. The river delta meets rolling hills on this tough providing a unique setting equipped with distinctive water features. The skillfully crafted water holes are the trademarks of the design. The design mimics the natural lines carved by the river delta. The fairways are wide open but lengthy and generous greens can also be quite challenging as well. Rio Vista is a golf course that has appeal for players of all skill levels from novices to pros, whether it's the scenery or the diverse layout. Be careful on windy days though, the open course can be especially brutal.

I had read so many negative comments about the course through the years up until a few months ago. Decided to make the drive from Sacramento to see for myself. The overall shape is f the course for January was great! There were some bare spots around some greens, but nothing out of the ordinary for winter time.
I met two members who commented about the improvements made on some the front nine. The greens were excellent, fast with lots break. The layout of the course through the housing community is done very well, and I enjoyed the variety of shots I played throughout the round. The bunkers were clean with plenty of sand. (Now if players will just learn to rake after themselves they would really be great.)The pace of play was great, and despite an early frost delay, tee times were only backed up about thirty minutes.
If the course continues to improve on what they have now, word will get out and many more people will be taking the drive out to Rio Vista to play this course.
Early morning fog
This was our first time playing and it was early in winter and it was completely fogged in. We would tee off on par 3s without being able to see the green. Had to use the gps maps on our phones to guess where to hit. We didnt see a lot of the course, but from what I saw, it was really nice. Lots of water in play (might have been fountains). Fairways all seem sloped to kick things in rough back to the fairway. The fairways were in rough condition (same with tee boxes), but greens seemed to be in good shape.
Course looking better everytime I play there greens are the best around, would play there again 🤓
Improving nicely
The course has improved nicely compared to last year. The front 9 has lots of bare spots in the fairways and lots of grounds under repair. The back 9 was lovely! Very nice to see the improvement.
Pace of play was fabulous. Got 18 holes in 3.5 hours! That is how you should play golf.
Work is slow but course is getting better.
The golf course has been under rehab for a couple of years now and it is slowly improving. The clubhouse is also being worked on and it is looking good. The bunkers on the course in particular has improved tremendously because sand has been added. There is still drainage issues on some of them but overall it has improved. Fairways are being worked on at the time l was playing there and parts of it was rope off where new seeding has been laid. Still plenty of dry spots but it is improving.
Sad to See
I am not a professional landscaper, and yet I can tell when something has gone awry in the maintenance element of a golf course. Let me say that the tee boxes and greens were fine. The greens rolled true and semi-fast, as evidenced by my many 3 putts. However, a few objections within respect to maintenance popped up. Sadly, on EVERY hole, there were bare spots (no grass) in the fairways for 15-20 yards that were not marked as ground under repair, and with no evidence of seeding or any kind of measure to replace the worn spots. On several holes, between 11:00 a.m. and noon, the fairway was being watered while I was on the tee box, directly in the area of my landing spot. What was more concerning was that these same areas being watered had the aforementioned bare spots with no seeding, which created large pools of mud. It got to be a regular occurrence, and I was not about to slip and fall in the mud, so i skipped the hole. I drove over two hours to play this course, but that is not a contributing factor. I'm sure that there were people who drove far less distance and encountered the same conditions. In addition, the course seems to be renovating the outside eating area with new concrete, so that was not available to patrons who wanted to grab a bite after their round. Again, I will mention that all the course personnel were friendly, but that doesn't mask the fact that the actual facility w=is in poor condition. It will be a long time before I return to this course due to the above contributing factors. It was once a very nice place to play, and now, not so much.
Rio vista golf
This course has a nice layout/design. BUT…. They do not maintain the course well. Tons of bare spots or dead areas. They watered all day while we were there and it became a mud pit. This was gem about 7 years ago and it went bad. Decided to give it a chance again after a few years and it remains in bad shape. It is too bad because as I stated it was a gem before.
Nice course layout
Enjoyed our round .. 1st 9 holes were under repair and we're challenging. The 2nd 9 were in much better shape and very pleasant. Lots of lovely water features and wildlife., but of course goose poop is a problem. Loved the newly remodeled clubhouse. Very nice. Look forward to playing the back nine again soon. 😊
Rio Vista in good shape
The course is back and is in great shape. The staff is great and pace of play is good. Few more improvements to make but over all the course is in great shape.
Tee boxes and bunkers
Still a lot of work needed on the fairways, tee boxes and bunkers. Fun course if these things are improved.
