About
Carlton Oaks Country Club is the only public Dye Design golf course in San Diego. The course is covered with hundreds of mature trees interspersed with sparkling blue lakes and meandering creeks. The layout offers a diverse mix of holes that all possess a unique character. They all offer different challenges in the form of either water hazards of strategically placed sand traps along the fairways. Tricky pot bunkers and interesting elevation changes were also incorporated into the design as well as Dye's signature railroad ties. There are five very different sets of tees that offer a challenging round from the back tees but also enough playability to appeal to a range of skill levels. In addition to the enjoyable layout, Carlton Oaks is one San Diego's most centrally located courses, sitting just minutes from downtown and many of the city's major attractions.

Perry Dye course. Nuff said.
Reap the benefit of playing a dye course without the price point. Iv been fortunate to play one of his father’s many courses and you can see the taste of design runs deep in the family. Obviously bunkers that once were would make the layout extremely pop but that comes with a big price point. No matter, the design is still elegant and challenging. I will live and die by this course. Anyone who finds a reason to complain simply doesn't care or know what they were lucky enough to play on.

Good Value for the Money
Never played the course before and was looking for a tee time last minute. Played early in the morning and was surprised at the dog track and course layout. Was a big fan of the layout but don’t expect the greens to be anything special.
For the weekend rate, would recommend in a pinch but there are better courses to play if you’re willing to spend $20 more.

Overall, really terrible condition.
I was interested to play the Pete Dye designed course and the basic layout is great, however the condition of the course is TERRIBLE. To start off, the driving range looks like a building site.
The tee boxes are uneven with grass that hadn't been cut in days. The fairways were like roads under repair, with lots of brown patches and uneven turf. The greens had unrepaired pitch marks everywhere. Plus, there were too many people out on the course as well, they squeezed as many players on as they could.
It needs a lot of money and attention to get it back to its glory days back in the 1970's, a long way to go....
Will never play there again, huge disappointment!

Not worth it
Could be a really fun course layout wise. Fairways are OK at best, a ton of mud, dirt and ground under repair. They need better drainage, puddles of water allover the place. Wear some old shoes. Greens are loaded with ball marks making it impossible to putt. A fair price for this place would be $40.

Course played well. No Cart Girl or anyone came by for snacks or anything.

Worst Golf Experience
This course was in terrible shape! Everything from tee boxes, to fairways, to greens were just plain awful.
It took 3 hours to play 9 holes. Of course, no marshall on course to speed up play. As with most courses, the intent is to get as many players possible on the course regardless of the satisfaction of players. The only redeeming factors of the day were the weather and the friendly woman working the beverage cart. In San Diego, there are better options for $80.

Good course can be better
Enjoyed the round pace of play was good Fairways and greens are in good condition. The rough and bunkers are in bad condition. They should offer a walking rate had to pay cart rate to walk.

Wow
Pete Dye at his most sinister. This golf course slope rating of 140 from the tips is underrated. I would give it more like 145 to 148 just because of the torture it offers. Deception deception deception.
There is plenty of good grass but it is not cut to play. I hate rees with long grass and every tee had it. The greens were fine.
I can see how many people rated conditions a 3 and it probably is because of uncut grass. Ill look past that. If they course management got off their butts and properly cut, not just for tournements, they could easily make a 4 rating..
Cut or not cut you better be on your game.
