About
Carlton Oaks Country Club is the only public Dye Design golf course in San Diego. The course is covered with hundreds of mature trees interspersed with sparkling blue lakes and meandering creeks. The layout offers a diverse mix of holes that all possess a unique character. They all offer different challenges in the form of either water hazards of strategically placed sand traps along the fairways. Tricky pot bunkers and interesting elevation changes were also incorporated into the design as well as Dye's signature railroad ties. There are five very different sets of tees that offer a challenging round from the back tees but also enough playability to appeal to a range of skill levels. In addition to the enjoyable layout, Carlton Oaks is one San Diego's most centrally located courses, sitting just minutes from downtown and many of the city's major attractions.

Worst Golf Experience
This course was in terrible shape! Everything from tee boxes, to fairways, to greens were just plain awful.
It took 3 hours to play 9 holes. Of course, no marshall on course to speed up play. As with most courses, the intent is to get as many players possible on the course regardless of the satisfaction of players. The only redeeming factors of the day were the weather and the friendly woman working the beverage cart. In San Diego, there are better options for $80.

Good course can be better
Enjoyed the round pace of play was good Fairways and greens are in good condition. The rough and bunkers are in bad condition. They should offer a walking rate had to pay cart rate to walk.

Pete Dye at his most sinister. This golf course slope rating of 140 from the tips is underrated. I would give it more like 145 to 148 just because of the torture it offers. Deception deception deception.
There is plenty of good grass but it is not cut to play. I hate rees with long grass and every tee had it. The greens were fine.
I can see how many people rated conditions a 3 and it probably is because of uncut grass. Ill look past that. If they course management got off their butts and properly cut, not just for tournements, they could easily make a 4 rating..
Cut or not cut you better be on your game.

OK Muni.
Course was OK. Lots of gopher holes. Needs some maintenance on the fairways. Not a flat lie on any of the blue tee boxes that I can recall. Also tee box grass was a little overgrown. Best part we’re the greens.

Course Is Rundown
I played this course 40 years ago when it was one of the best courses in San Diego. The layout is still challenging but the overall condition is horrible. No ball washers, eroded cart paths and no sand in bunkers are just a few. You can’t even get a level lie on the tee boxes. Sad to see what once was a beautiful course allowed go into ruin.
