Tough Front 9, relaxed back 9
Narrow fairways and mountainous terrain make it difficult to get a good footing in the front 9, unless you hit it really straight off the tee.
Greens appear to be faster than other courses I've played. No water hazards, and the sand pits appear to be very hard, so they are a little easier to wedge out in one or two strokes.
Way too slow - too many groups of five
This could be a very good course, but management has decided to pack the players in, many groups of five moving at a snail's pace. Greed has won out here!
Fairways need some work, mostly mowing and reseeding.
Driving range is a few green spots surrounded by dead yellow grass.
If they'd adjust the size of the playing groups and invest a little time and money in the fairways, this could be a winner.
Never going back!
Nice course.
Absoulutely no course management! There were a minimum of 3 groups on every hole, twosomes up to fivesomes and no golf etiquette from the patrons, riders mixed with walkers and and mostley novice golfers it reminded me of an amusement park and waiting in lines all day. The Course is challenging with fast greens and odd angles and the rough was very forgiving. Could be a great course if it had better management.
This is fun golf course for everyone
Only tuf holes are frist two holes. everyenjoyable. make sure you get good rate. sometime to expensive for this tape M-golf course in LA counti.
Great potential, but disappointing
This course is so physically and geographically beautiful and well laid-out, that it has the potential to be the best course in the Valley, if not greater Los Angeles. However, it's the Fairways that hold it back - dig them up and re-do them from scratch - same with the bunkers! You can land in the middle of the Fairway and be hitting from such a tight lie you'll feel you're on hard pan. I'd rather hit from pine straw. The bunkers need attention too - too little sand that's been recycled too many times.
The greens are excellent, by contrast, but even the tee boxes need work. Some were mushy and bare.
Great public course -- long, straight, & narrow!
The conditions of this course are better than some country clubs in the area. All the greens but 1 or 2 are in pristine condition.
Bring your long game because Knollwood is long, very long! The fairways also present a challenge as they are narrow.
For a public course it is well worth the money.
The only criticism is the pace of play -- it's stacked with players all day & you will be waiting for your turn quite a bit -- but still well worth it!
Nice course, played quickly
We played in the morning. Pace of play was fine. Staff was very friendly. We'll be back.
We couldn't play
When we went there, the starter said it will be 30-40 minutes delay. There were many 5 sum groups. We had to cancel and came home.
Slow Day
Played at 6:15am. 3rd group off the tee box. Stuck behind really slow players. Had to wait every shot. Tee boxes were less than satisfactory and greens were in the worst condition that I've seen in a long time. Fairways weren't much better. Standing water everywhere.
Won't play here again until these issues are addressed.
2 carts died!
Play in a threesome their cart die on the 3rd, my then died on the 5th. Still enjoyed the course.
The course is in a lot better shape from last year.
The staff is great there, clubhouse has good food and very homey feeling.
The downfall is the play time.
Having 5somes out there slows the play up right off the bat. 3rd hole is 3-4 group back up in peak play and 1 -2 wait on average day. Its a short down hill Par 4 protected with front bunker and trouble if not hit accurately. smart play is layup and get up and down. the good thing is that hold up is in between 2 par 5's that are reachable if you hit the ball a long way. str8 forward par 5's.
greens are fairly easy once you get the speed down. the reads are not that tough or stressfull.
If you are lucky and happen to catch a nice pace round at this course , then you would love it. has all the shots required of you, and lots of trees and shade.
If they switched how they run 5's there, the course would generate a nice constant flow of players from a little further out. instead of the same regulars all the time, that walk around like they own the course and throw proper edicate out the window, along with the rake for the bunkers and loud chatter when you are about to hit after waiting for the group in front of you quitly.
That's just to share my experience 2 out of the 3 total I have played there within past year and a half...
Maybe run groups with 5's between hourse that the course feels wouldn't hurt the flow..
Hope this review helps.
Good, fun course
I like this course for the most part, but the pace of play is slow. They allow 5 somes out, but do not requie them to have carts. A lot of the players play from the tips when they should be playing from the whites, and study their puts like they are on the PGA tour.
great layout, challenging
i am 58 years old and have been playing knollwood over the years since i was 16 years old, in the 1970's. it is in the BEST shape i've ever seen it in, a real joy to play! i always loved the layout but it was never kept up and had too much hardpan. now it finally looks like it should, and looks like a championship golf course, plays longer than its yardage.
