Just sad. POP is horrendous and nobody is doing anything about it
2 hours and 50 minutes to play the front 9, teeing off as first twilight at 12:30ish. This is NOT acceptable for a course that is only 3100 from the white tees!! Absolutely insane. And nobody is out there to help push the pace.
I think some people dropped out at the turn, so we somehow managed to finish 18 literally in the last bit of light, though we could not see the shot into the green, we just guessed. It was 5:15pm. Dark.
The course rating and slope need to be changed to more appropriately fit the crowd who attempt to play here, because they do not have the skill nor the etiquette nor the self-cognisance to manage their own pace, to move forward to keep up, those morning groups who end up backing up the entire course for the rest of the day. If the harder rating discourages some from playing it, so be it, they should not be playing here! They need to be told that if they are unable to keep up they are no longer welcome. But I get it - it’s just a business, the place needs to make money, and they don’t care if the final few groups don’t get to finish the course in 5 hours. The total yardage is only 6000 from the whites which mean they ought to be finished in under 4 hours but somehow are completely unable. They should not be playing here.
The back 9 greens were not cut or rolled as much as the front, showing very severe signs of the punching growth that made the greens very bumpy.
Overall the course needs RAIN. It’s so dried out and crusty along the sides where the rough would be, hard pan all along, that if anybody would miss it sideways the ball is gone 50 yards to the adjacent hole. It’s really sad.
Dunno why we put up with the golf industry and the rules governance when they don’t help themselves or the players by letting this debacle of Pace problems continue around the world.
SIX HOUR ROUND
They started booking tee times every 8 minutes AND squeezing in extra tee times every hour or so. It's an absolute disaster. Waited 20 minutes on every hole. DO NOT GO.
Longest Round ever
Golfed at Knollwood multiple times but this round may have been the worst experience at this course ever. First, no mention of the range not being able to be used due to their ball retrieval cart being out of service. Second, they had no carts available and we didn’t get ours until 3 minutes before tee time. Third, there was a scramble tournament being played (also no mention of it at booking) but that tournament led to a 3 hour front 9 and a 5 hour and 45 minute total round which was unreal. After finishing every hole and then pulling up to the next tee box only to have to wait for at least 2 groups to tee off was outrageous. The course still staggered tee times every 8 minutes knowing full well that this scramble tourney was occurring. They could’ve mitigated it by extending the stagger between tee times, but clearly only cared about the money as opposed to the golfer experience. Pretty disappointed in Knollwood this time. Will have to think if it’s worth going back anytime soon.
Shaking my head
The starter/pro shop guys are always real kind and welcoming. Course conditions were average. That’s never really an issue here.
Unfortunately what is an issue is the horrendous pace of play. I was mentally prepared for a long round, it being a2:16 pm time on a Saturday. And it began with going off about 20 minutes later than usual. Then..the 3 hour front nine pace. Thankfully, some people must have left or decided to actually play golf and I made it to hole 15 in five hours or so. Got dark, didn’t finish, and wasn’t really expecting to but jeez, get a marshal, enforce pace of play and push along the clowns who have zero concept of ready golf and course demeanor.
Really enjoy the layout and proximity to home. Everything else pretty much stinks. #shrinkthegame :/
Nice for LA Public
But the pace of play is horrible. There should be a ranger to help with the pace of play. Course was in good shape. Greens were nicer than most public courses. But shouldn’t have to wait on 14 of 18 tee boxes.
Play this course if you have 6 hours
This course plays really slow. There is no Marshall which might help if they do their job. They allow five-somes which also slows play. We had a 12:16 tee time but did not tee off until 12:45. There were no carts. It took five hours to finish. There was a tournament before us but there were long gaps in time between players finishing. New management needs to work on pace of play. This course is known for this so plan a waiting at least 10 minutes at each tee box also.
No power. Extremely slow pace of play
Played 2 rounds. First round delayed by 40 minutes due to power outage, only played 16. Second round 15. No food, didn’t answer phones.
Slowest round I’ve ever played
I have been here before, but usually during the week and early in the morning. And I have played slow courses before, but you’re outside, you’re playing golf, whatever.
This was a whole new version of slow. Usually once you start you sorta get spread out and things move along. But today, after virtually every hole, we would walk up to the tee box and there would be two groups waiting. Not one group teeing off while the other waited... no. Two groups waiting and then us. This happened on every hole until we were about 2 hours in, waiting on home 5, and people behind us started to quit. 4 holes in 2 hours is a 9 hour pace for a round. I don’t know what’s going on, but they need to fix this. I did not get the impression this was a one-off kinda thing.
That being said, I’ve loved knollwood all the other times I’ve played. Challenging but fun.
Way Too Long To Play 18 holes
Waited for a long time on each tee box and fairway for the group ahead of us and ahead of them.
First 3 holes had multiple groups waiting to tee off at the tee box.
