Clipper/Galleon at Shipyard Golf Club
About
The Clipper/Galleon Course at Shipyard Golf Club, which combines two of the three nine-hole golf courses on the property, creates an exciting combination of long fairways and perilous hazards. Clipper/Galleon has a rating of 74, with a slope of 133 from the championship tees.
With plenty of sand and water hazards, Clipper may be the most difficult of the nines. Designed by George Cobb and built in 1970, Clipper requires a good long game and a soft touch around the greens.
Galleon, the original nine holes, meanders through large oak and tall pines. Accurate placement of approach shots into heavily guarded greens is necessary on this nine.

Average vacation golf
Shipyard is your average Hilton Head golf course. Greens are probably the highlight with nice roll and true break. All other aspects (upkeep, layout etc) are average for this area. There are much better kept course that we experienced this trip (sea pines, palmetto dunes), but this course was in fine shape. Make sure someone in your group has a GPS set up on their phone as several holes are doglegs that the direction is not apparent off the tee.
The pro shop and starter are not particularly friendly. The starter gave a stern warning that as the first group off we should not play too FAST. While I understand the point of what could only be described as a lecture (course has 3 nines so no matter where you start you turn onto a course that is already full) it doesn't need to be so rude.
All that said, I would play this course again if the price was right as it is a well kept track and a pretty good layout.
Beautiful course, slow pace of play
Pace of play hindered by "cart path" only rules, when they were unnecessary. The course is beautiful though, with an interesting design. It does require some target shots.
Good family outing for 9 holes
Great course for family golf in Hilton Head. Multiple tees for play at various levels. A little pricy but still a value considering the golf rates in general in HHI.
Played with a junior and an an adult who plays once a year. All had a good time. And played in just under 2 hours.
Condition
The Shipyard courses were in excellent condition…probably as good or better as any at HiltonHead.
Good pace on a hot day
Played in 4:45. Course was in good shape an the layout is fair but requires accurate iron play.
Good Course but ask how they are sending out groups
I was relatively pleased with my experience playing Shipyard. The course was in good condition and it was a relatively interesting layout. With that being said my issue was with the way they were sending groups on the course. We were the first time of the day. The starter said "You are the first group of the day, and setting the pace for the day." We played our first 9 in 1 hour 40 minutes, we were not rushing, just playing ready golf. As we made the turn, we came right into the middle of the groups they were sending of the second 9. It took us 2 hours 25 minutes for the second 9 (I realize this is still a good overall pace of just over 4 hours, just annoying that it was 45 minutes longer and we waited on every shot on the back). With this being a 27 hole facility I don't know how they direct groups around the nines. If we were not told by the starter that we were setting pace, or perhaps we were informed that groups were starting off our second nine, until x time. I found out in the clubhouse we could have played the first 9 in 2hours 25 minutes and still ran into the groups going off our second 9.
Great course!
Really enjoyed playing Shipyard; greens were excellent, some challenging holes and staff very friendly. Excellent value for money and would play here again!
Great course for the money
I played two separate nine hole rounds on a Wednesday and Thursday morning. The first time I played by myself and was able to finish the nine in an hour and thirty minutes. The second time I was paired with another single and we still finished in two hours. The course was fairly short but was still challenging enough. I played the Brigantine course both times. Plenty of water to watch out for. Greens were fairly slow but rolled true. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. I always appreciate people that are friendly and welcoming. Shipyard may not be the most prestigious golf club on the island but it is a fun course to play
Fun course
Played 18. Brigadine and galleion. Really nice layout. I paid $80 to play 18 at 430pm. Peak times are $125+. Not worth the much imo. The trade off for a 430 tee time is family starts to come out and play…. Hackers delight at that point. None the less, great course. Fair. Fun. And greens were pretty true for a recent aeration.
