About

Holes 18
Type Resort
Par 72
Length 6878 yards
Slope 133
Rating 74.0

The Clipper/Galleon Course at Shipyard Golf Club, which combines two of the three nine-hole golf courses on the property, creates an exciting combination of long fairways and perilous hazards. Clipper/Galleon has a rating of 74, with a slope of 133 from the championship tees.

With plenty of sand and water hazards, Clipper may be the most difficult of the nines. Designed by George Cobb and built in 1970, Clipper requires a good long game and a soft touch around the greens.

Galleon, the original nine holes, meanders through large oak and tall pines. Accurate placement of approach shots into heavily guarded greens is necessary on this nine.

Would Return

Had a nice afternoon round here, ranger kept things moving on the front 9 and by the back 9 we were seemingly the only ones left on the course, so we were able to breeze through in under 4 hours. Course was in good shape despite recently being aerated, though greens were a little slow as a result. My only complaint was the attitude of some of the staff — both the starter and the ranger were strangely standoffish/rude. The guys at bag drop at the end of the round were fantastic though as were the folks in the pub. Would definitely come back to play again

Fun round of golf

We played here for first time. We really enjoyed the course. Greens were recently aerated but not terrible. We played near noon so we basically had course to ourselves which was a vacation treat.couse is in good shape. Staff were very friendly. Ate at the Brickyard Pub after which also was good. We will return.

Shipyard: A hidden Berth in Hilton Head Island

Generous fairways are lined by trees dripping with Spanish moss, some strategically placed to shape the hole.

Most fairways are gently undulating, so shot shape, especially on longer fairway shots need to be controlled.

If you can avoid the trees, be aware of the carefully curated water features meandering along side many fairways, some hidden off the tee by landscaped tufts of grass, again used to shape the hole.

Just when you're celebrating your position off the tee, the designer slips in a very sharp dogleg, so the trees and water really play their part course.

Many greens are slightly raised from fairway height, so clubbing is essential to avoid delicate chips onto the receptive and lightly sloped greens.

Various wildlife can be seen and heard along the way. Mainly birds and some Big alligators!

All the staff were very friendly, accommodating and happy to have a chat.

The clubhouse was clean and airy with a beautiful veranda overlooking some finishing holes.

All in all: a little gem of a course.

Nice course good value.

Played 9 holes two different days. Course is in very nice shape. Challenging if you don’t hit it straight. Staff in pro shop are very friendly and give you insight on how to play the course and putt their style of greens. Starter staff are very welcoming and make you want to come back. Golf is expensive in HHI but shipyard was a pretty good value in comparison to other courses.
