Clipper/Galleon at Shipyard Golf Club

About
The Clipper/Galleon Course at Shipyard Golf Club, which combines two of the three nine-hole golf courses on the property, creates an exciting combination of long fairways and perilous hazards. Clipper/Galleon has a rating of 74, with a slope of 133 from the championship tees.
With plenty of sand and water hazards, Clipper may be the most difficult of the nines. Designed by George Cobb and built in 1970, Clipper requires a good long game and a soft touch around the greens.
Galleon, the original nine holes, meanders through large oak and tall pines. Accurate placement of approach shots into heavily guarded greens is necessary on this nine.

Very enjoyable course
It is a fair and challenging course. As you'd expect, lots of trees, so some drives are a bit intimidating. Didn't have a bad lie all day, and the greens were fast/somewhat tricky. Staff was super friendly as well. Even though we arrived with only about 15 minutes to spare, the starter encouraged us to go "machine gun" a few balls on the range.
Great value for Hilton Head
Since I went to Hilton Head with family, I was placed with a course member and two of his friends. They were great! I was definitely the poorer player of the group, but they were very accommodating. John even joked about paying $20 for the zoo tour on one hole (to view the resident alligator). Greens were super nice! I was surprised for Hilton Head how open the fairways were (to accommodate my slice). Great food and service in the clubhouse pub.
Nice course
Shipyard offers three nine hole courses. Clipper, Brigantine, and Galleon. I played Clipper/Brigantine. Clipper is rated more difficult and offers many sand bunkers. Brigantine offers water hazards on seven out of nine holes.
The course over-seeded weeks ago where the grass has grown in and playable. The greens were faster than average and rolled true. Don’t overthink a break. Instead putt for the hole when in doubt.
The bag guys and pro shop personnel are friendly. I recommend this course. I tied off at 7:56 and paired with two golfers. Played 18 in 3.5 hours. Shipyard starters do split tees. So check in and ask about your pace of play syncing up at the crossover.
Very enjoyable round on a beautiful, well-manicured course
My group thoroughly enjoyed our round at Shipyard on 11/22. The staff was very helpful and the course was in great shape. We played in less than 4 hours. All in all, I would highly recommend playing at The Shipyard!
Nice course for all golfers
The layout and pace of the course was well done. However, I would like to see a description of each hole on the sign and scorecard. You have to guess a little which way to hit it. Also, it was difficult to see the color markers for teeing off. Maybe paint the entire marker instead of the ends of it. Also, some of the flags at the pin were tough to see. Maybe use bright colors such as yellow. Overrall, great value for the course.
Would recommend this course
The course was in great condition although it had rained the night before and early morning.
Excellent and fast greens.
Friendly staff.
Would play it again!
Had to Pay $43 To Have My Wife Ride Along...
Played this course on my first trip to Hilton Head. Beautiful course, greens were in amazing condition. Nice practice range, including putting and chipping greens. Only complaint is they charged me $43 for my wife to ride along. Never paid for a rider before. I was playing on a 1/2 price deal from the resort we were staying at. It came across that the course was getting back to a full price rate. Considering this is a resort town and having non-playing partners riding along is probably a frequent event, $43 was punitive. Won't be playing here again if I have a non-playing rider.
Shipyard Speedy
The course was in good shape. The greens were super fast. Took 18 holes to finally get the sod close. A missed three foot put could easily role 5-6 feet past the hole. The greens were true just tough
