Very nice course very challenging. This particular day they practice facilities were closed and it was cartpath only making it very difficult to play.
Concerning
It is still the most beautiful course in the area but the greens were problematic as there is a different type of grass coming up through the Bermuda...
Fantastic Layout
I have played most of the courses in the Williamsburg area but Royal New Kent was one of the few remaining that I had not. There was a good amount t of rain in the days prior that left some portions of the course quite muddy. Overall though the course drainage was good and the layout was great. For being in the middle of the off season this course was fantastic. The greens are absolutely amazing. Rolled true and stayed playable even though everything was heavily saturated. I look forward to playing this course in its prime!
Great Course for the value
This course is one of the most challenging courses in Richmond, and I would have to think it's one of the more challenging in the state. Incredible design, made to emulate the Irish link style courses. A few balls will probably be lost, but it's an incredible experience. Usually in the $60-$80 range so the $40 deal on Golf Now Hot deals was a steal. Play this course if you are in the Richmond area!
Always the best!
It does not matter where I play golf in this area ... Royal New Kent is always a step above and more fun to play!
If you like Stranz designs..You'll Love it!!
OK, to be fair I'm a Mike Stranz fan boy. I wanted to play complete the rota of his public course designs. Conditions were great for December. Course was in excellent condition as well. Pace of play was fast (full disclosure I was playing as a single, and first off :)) With it being a bit damp, very little roll so it played longer than usual, but zero complaints. Would definitely recommend....again, provided you like Stranz designs!!
Different is Good
Such a fun place to play, so very different than the other courses in Virginia. Link's style, yet very playable and pleasing to the eye. Green's were fast and true,. Staff was great, don't miss playing this course!
Expected More
Was hoping for a little more as I have not played since the renovation. Just seems like they just made it how it should have been in the first place. The drainage was much better and the traps are better, got rid of the poo water near the horse track!!!. It has also been cleaned up a good bit. Apparently after speaking with an employee, those were really the only changes. Which brings me to. It's too expensive. I guess if people will pay it? I can play 2 rounds elsewhere comparable for the price. Still love the course! And will play on occasion I'm just cheap!!!! Thanks New Kent!!!! Good work!
Vert open and great view
First 9 hole was awesome. Back nine with home view was as nice as the first nine holes. It was wet on fairway probably from rain from previous day. That was only complaint I had but overall it was enjoyable.
Irish Gem
Loved this course, front 9 is spectacular and back a little less so but over all a memorable round!
Fantastic Track
RNK is a roller coaster of a golf course. Challenging layout! Conditions were great for November! Staff was friendly and helpful! It’s come a long way since new management took over! Would rate it above Tobacco Roads!

Great review! Its fitting you mentioned a roller coaster...one of our favorite Mike Strantz quotes about the courses he and his team wanted to design and build..."We have a saying...at amusement parks like Disney Land, Six Flags, etc, you don’t see the long lines at the merry-go-rounds, you see them at the roller coasters. That is what people want.”
A top 100 course!
A beautiful, highly challenging course. You only saw the hole you were on for most holes. The front 9.plays through a forest. Lots of elevation changes. Well-placed bunkers. Each hole is framed beautifully. The greens were a good speed. but appeared slower than normal because of the recent rains. I played the 6200 tees. Unfortunately, because of recent rains, it was cart paths only, and the course felt like 6800 yards!
Every hole is like a signature hole! Some were long. There were forced carries, and decisions to lay-up. The short holes had their own challenges, like not using a driver, blind shots to green or severely sloped greens.
The course earns every bit of its high slope.
I look foward to returning when the course is dry.
Great course
Course was challenging, but fantastic fun even in the wet weather. They were accommodating to allow me to ride in the rough due to my disability. Definitely will go back many more times.
Exactly! Each one of the seven courses Mike Strantz designed and built from scratch were as unique as they are beautiful. He modeled Royal New Kent after his two favorite Irish courses, Royal County Down and Ballybunion which gives it very much an Irish feel so you can experience Irish golf closer to home....Golf Ireland in Virginia.
