SunRidge Canyon Golf Club
About
SunRidge Canyon Golf Club provides adventure amid natural terrain over 7,002 yards of par-71 golf. The golf course was laid out by the golf course architect Keith Foster, who hid the golf course in the ridges and canyons of the foothills of the McDowell Mountains, one of the last untouched bastions of the Southwestern United States.
The SunRidge Canyon Golf Club's signature hole is the 17th, and it is unique, giving golfers the option of shooting a 209-yard, par 3 over a box canyon today and then going for a 152-yard par 3 from an elevated tee tomorrow. Foster discovered the elevated-tee opportunity during a tour of the golf course while it was being constructed and added the Canyon set of tees right then. The vistas he knew golfers would get were enough to convince Foster to set up the second set of tees.
After a round of golf at the SunRidge Canyon Golf Club, head back to the Ridge Room, which attracts visitors and locals for the great view and Southwestern cuisine.

Great condition after overseeding. Wonderful staff!
I've played Sunridge Canyon a few times and find it very challenging, even from the forward tees. I'm not a big hitter, so if the regular tees are over 6000 yards, I move up. The course was in very fine condition after overseeding, and even though it was cart path only, because I recently had surgery and have a handicapped placard in my car, they allowed me to go on the fairway at 90 degrees. There are lots of forced carries which is a bit of a challenge to me (more mental than anything else), but it was still a fun course to play, especially because I got one of the "Hot deals" tee times on Golfnow.com. I highly recommend this course, but not for beginners. It's an easy place to lose lots of balls, so bring an extra sleeve or two.
This coarse has great vistas and GPS is very helpful.
I enjoyed how the GPS would summarize the details of the whole you are playing and tell you the best targets to aim for and how to best play the hole. When I was able to follow the GPS hints the results were excellent. I really like the 17th tee box. The view is spectacular. I wish all my friends back in IL could experience the pay on this coarse.
Frustrating experience
First indication that it was cart path only was from started at first tee. Cart continually locked up as GPS system kept thinking that cart was off path.
Pro shop offered halfhearted apology when advised, no offer of any compensation
Very poor value for conditions and poor customer service
Stunning views with challenging holes!
Very well maintained course. Holes offered many challenges from the fairways to the greens. Not your ordinary golf course! Bunkers placed very strategically causing you to carefully think through your shots. Very enjoyable course to play for any level of golfer.
Well maintained
Still cart paths only and the pace was very slow. But course was in great condition.
Narrow course
Nice course but disappointed that when I made the tee time I was told carts were ok on the course but upon arrival I was told that it was cart path only. This not only made it play slower but as usual no matter how many clubs I took over to my ball I never had the right club for the shot. Finally just simply took the entire bag over,. Should have walked the course. Greens looked quick but weren't. Staff was friendly.
Long to play
Tough to play because of the irregularity of the course. Challenging
A good challenge
The course offers a nice diversity of holes some with great views of the surrounding mountains.
Great Course; Great Technology
This was the best value of any course we played last week! Although the 'Cart Path Only' policy was a drag, they had recently over-seeded, all-in-all this was a great course.
The Carts had a GPS system that I hadn't come across before. It was neat to have a fly-by of each hole when we approached the Tee Box. The screen was easy to read; and the guess work was minimized - trying to determine how long it was to the pin.
The scenery was splendid, and I would definitely return to this course during my next visit.
Great track. Decent but not pristine course conditions
In Phoenix what separates a number of very good courses is the consistency and quality of course conditions. This is a great design that is a little up and down in terms of conditions, especially the greens which were not very fast and a bit wiry. I consider it a level below a few other local courses in this regard but still a good value for the money. Wicked Six closing holes play much longer than yardage because they play mostly uphill and into the wind. Pace of play was hindered by cart path only due to recent overseed of fairways.
Fun layout and great staff
Interesting course in good shape considering the shoulder season. Nice greens rolled quick and true. Friendly staff and fun beverage cart :)
Still needs a few weeks
Over seed time is a difficult time to rate courses. Conditions were windy and course not yet ready , but adequate. Should be in great shape in about two weeks.
Truely a beautiful course
The staff right off the bat were very friendly. I arrived an hour early and got to the driving right away. The course had just reopened after some renovations, so it was in excellent shape. It was a good challenging course. After the round they took my clubs to my rental car and I found that I had left the lights on in the car and had a dead battery, they found a set of jumper cables and the friendly starter jump started my car.
Great views
The course was closed to improve overall conditions. Should be pristine within a month or so.
Challenging track that is always in good shape.
Home to the "Wicked Six" the last six holes of the course...I would actually call it the "Evil Eight" because from 11 on...it is a tough row to hoe.....The front nine is no birdie fest either, but the "Wicked Six" all play into the wind and uphill. Overall, some great holes on the course. There are one or two holes that are a little unfair in the design, but if you bring your "A" game, you will do fine. Course is closed for the rest of the summer for renovations. So come October it should be even better. Bummer though, it was a good track for a low price in the summer.
Don't play at Sun Ridge Canyon, it will disappoint you!
My son and I played this course in early April and it was great. But now we both played it again on June 29th and it was absolutely horrible! By the neglected appearance of the greens and the parched fairways, they haven't watered it since April. The grass was brown and dead, and the majority of fairways were extremely hard and compacted grassless dirt. The cart lady approached us on the very FIRST hole and said if we needed anything we better order it now because she was leaving and not coming back for the rest of the day. It was a 1:30 pm tee time at Hole 1. At hole 15 the first and only time we saw anybody on the course, was when the ranger drove over to my son and I (who were the only two playing) and told us we needed to hurry up because we are the last ones on the course and he wanted to go home early. We were on pace for about a 4 hour game. Arriving at the clubhouse after finishing hole 18, there was absolutely nobody to meet us or even to return the golf cart to. I think they all went home. There was literally nobody there. So my son and I gathered our stuff, wiped our clubs down and left the cart where I think somebody would retrieve it. Though the layout of the course is great, the condition of the course is pathetically neglected. The staff, or should I say absence of staff, was shameful. My son and I will not be playing there anymore! There are just too many better options from golf courses that want to take care of their customers.
Incredible
One of the best courses I've ever played. The "Wicked Six" is incredible.
Challenging, Top Shelf Course When in Excellent Condition
Challenging layout, trouble everywhere, must keep the ball in play as there is no recovery from the desert. Beautiful setting with mountain and desert views - even the houses on the perimeter are nice and not intrusive. Greens are tricky to read and putt, with lots of sand protecting them. Tough to review right now, because the early summer has not been kind to the conditions - grass is thin in many places. lots of brown/dry spots, greens are spotty and erratic in speed. Practice facility is great, staff is professional and friendly. When conditions improve, this course will resume its position as a treat to play in this area.
Was under repair, but still in good shape. Last six holes are challenging.
More information up front would have been helpful. Don't go long on 15, you will surely pay. Some of the run off areas were extreme, but overall a fun course. The staff was friendly and courteous. Love the front nine, the back would have been typical desert/development course except for the last four holes, they were more scenic.
Great layout
This is a terrific layout making you think about each shot. There are very few "bombs away" holes. The wicked six are a great stretch of finishing holes. We played 2 weeks prior to them shutting down for the summer and it played firm and fast on the fairways while the greens were still very receptive. Greens are grainy and require some getting used to, ask the starter about the mountains influence prior to playing
