San Tan Highlands
About
San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

Nice course, nice staff, very slow play
Surprisingly slow pace of play despite there being a course ranger. He was pleasant but apparently not doing much to move slower groups along.
My round took 5 or so minutes less than 5 hours and our foursome waited on nearly every shot starting at the third hole.
Based on the pace of play, I would not recommend this course.
No More Chances
I’m done playing this course. I’m at the point where I’d rather pay 20% more and play any other course.
Pace of play is atrocious. Starter was nowhere to be seen and it was total mayhem. 3 hours to play 9, on course for a 6 hour round before we gave up and left. Things were so backed up that they were an hour behind.
The worst part? No communication. You’d think they’d mention the delay when you check-in… right? Wrong. So you load up and get ready to play, only to be stopped at the last minute by the starter (if you can find him) and he tells you to wait for an hour before you go out.
The pro shop is run by the rudest dude I’ve ever met. Thanks for nothing Mike.
The only redeeming quality is one of the female volunteers who lives there and came and apologized to all the groups. But she then told us she was getting “fired” on January 1st. So goodbye to the volunteers I guess.
Bad course, poor management. Play elsewhere.
Family Day
Great experience playing with son and two grandchildren. Had a frost delay. Conditions on the course were mostly good. Some areas around the greens were chunky and a challenge to hit out of. Fairways and greens were in good condition. This is a fun track to play
Nice Course
I lkie San Tan Highlander and will be back to play another round
Great course. Beverage purchase needs improvement.
Love the course. Beer deals only offered in Maria’s at the clubhouse. Stopped at the turn. Only 1 person working so took far too long to buy beverages as employee was expoing food, taking food orders and taking players’ orders after 9. This is the norm for this club, hope this changes in the new year with their staffing changes.
Course is in great shape. I went as a single and the father and son in law I played were great.
Pace of play was awesome. No waiting really. The guys played fast. No fooling around, just golf 😊
All great. Will definitely play there again.
Rude girl working bar/turn
Had a great day on a beautiful course! Greens ran great, good speed and a true roll. There was no cart girl on a busy, hot Thursday right before Christmas. When I stopped at the turn to grab a couple beers and waters, I was left waiting at the window for 5 minutes and then was greeted with “what do you need “! Same thing when I went in the bar/restaurant afterwards. She was back in the kitchen talking to the cooks and I had to yell hello 4 times before she came out. The starter and the people around the bag drop area were extremely friendly. I drove almost an hour to check this course out and I’m glad I did!
