San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

Driving range balls should be included!

$12 for a medium bucket of balls is completely ridiculous. Fix the tee boxes. Add some ball cleaners too. Sheesh. Who’s running this place

Course in Great Shape

Greens were running nicely and fairways were well maintained. Bunkers could use a little more sand. Will definitely play again.

Good course for the price

I play this course weekly during the week. Everyone complaing about 5 hour rounds must be playing here on the weekend. This time of year weekend rounds average 5 hours unless you go to the 200$ per round courses. Or join a private club. I have lived in phx area for 31 years and quit playing golf on weekends for that reason. I think this course is good value and the staff is very friendly. I play 3-4 rounds per week

So I look for deals.

Great day

It was a great day, just too late start time at 130 pm. Back 9 very picturesque and pretty. Fairways were in great shape. No ball cleaning at the holes though. Staff was great !

Pretty Decent Course/Poor Pace of Play

I have played San Tan Highlands a number of times this month and overall, think the course is a good course with a reasonable valuation. Greens have been good of late with decent speed. The downside the last few times out has been pace of play with up to 3 groups on a tee box more than once in a round. They advertise a maximum 4 hour and 20 minute pace of play which I think is slow for a course like this. I have had few rounds exceed 4 hours and 30 minutes with one nine hole round in excess or 2 hours and 30 minutes. It appears to be a combination of over booking and under marshalling. There is no reason that a foursome shouldn't be able to play this course in 4 hours.

Lot's of potential

The course has so much potential but it needs some investment in infrastructure in my opinion. The greens and fairways were good, tee boxes need some care in general. The new power carts are very nice and the complimentary water was appreciated. The $4.98 water charge (above the green fees) and $11.00 for a medium bucket of range balls seems excessive.

Crowded course

Tee off as one of the first tee times in the morning. The guys up front were saying they were almost full with every tee time taken. We played the first 9 in less than 2 hours but had to wait 30-45 mins at the turn due to the multiple groups of 9 hole players on the back 9. Maybe say up front, don't play too fast because you will just have to wait at the turn? But we are still supposed to keep pace right?
