San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

The average review....

The pace was slow. More than 5 hours for 18 on a Saturday afternoon. The cart paths need attention. The ground/gravel/grass don't match the level of the cement path in many areas and there is broken/cracked concrete. Going off the path with a wheel and you'll need 10 yards to get the wheel back on the path because of the difference in height. Also, there are changes in elevation near the greens that could cause walking accidents for older golfers. The overseeding was spotty in some areas. The course overall is nice to play.

The course is in great shape. The tee boxes need reworking but green are super nice. Very fun course with great views.

Nice Course

Not sure what course some of these reviewers are playing but the STH Course I play is in great shape, well taken care of. Pace of play depends what day but typically is around 4:15 with 4:30 the expectation. New carts, upgrades to the driving range coming, I highly recommend!

new name, same old

Played San Tan Highlands the other day. Although the name has changed its still Johnson Ranch. The pace of play was terrible, 4:45 for the round. Only saw the cart girl and the ranger once. Tee boxes need work as none are level. Greens are slow and still no sand in the bunkers. This could be a great course but changing the name is like changing the colour of lipstick on a pig. Too bad.

Best Shape

Over the last few weeks I have played the course a few times. Having come out of over-seed the track is in fabulous shape and will only get better. On some holes they have consolidated the tee boxes, I am assuming to encourage strong grass growth on unused boxed at this time. That will yield a better experience for all skill levels once they come back in play.

Slow pace

Slowest pace of play in AZ. Marshal does not make slow groups keep up with groups ahead of them. They never have enough carts. Couldn’t get a cart until 15 mins before tee time.

San Tan Highlands

Course recently came out of overseed. Plenty of overseed rye in fairways and greens. We need some colder weather to have all the Bermuda go dormant. As expected coming out of overseed the grass in fairways and greens are a bit long. As a result greens are slower than normal. Front nine routes thru neighborhoods and not much character. Definitely preferred back nine. It has more character with elevation changes and dog legs. Pace of play was just over 4 hours.

THE Desert Golf Experience

I live in the Seattle region, so golf here is very different than golf in the desert. San Tan provides an incredible experience for people who want to see desert golfing, fantastic staffing, and an amazing visual experience. The front nine is beautiful, but much like any neighborhood golf course. However, the back nine take you to unbelievable views of the desert, the surrounding communities, and the contrast of green against desert brown. The amount of wildlife is also incredible with the bunnies and the birds etc etc. If you're in the area, take time to play San Tan. I played four rounds in 5 days, and it was fantastic!
