San Tan Highlands
About
San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

Fantastic Views
This course has fantastic views, but the pace of play was extremely frustrating, to the point where we didn't finish our round. Greens are also quite slow.
Good layout poor conditions
Fairways and greens in decent shape from over-seed although greens were real slow very bumpy. A lot of areas on course really shabby. It doesn’t seem like anyone cares about aesthetics and quality of transition areas. Cart paths in poor shape. Had the feel of a cheap under maintained muni course. Bunkers poor and the rates were high for course conditions. Too bad, excellent layout but you can tell the owners don’t want to spend any money on the course.
Operations needs some tweaking
The course is great. The greens are still a little slow, coming off of overseeding. The staffing, and supervision of volunteer staffing, needs some work. At competing courses nearby, for courses of the same price, customer service is much better than this course. At bag drop, volunteers leaning against the wall, smoking and talking with each other while you struggle with your bags...as one example. One person checking you in at peak tee times (early morning) and a line to the back of the pro shop...as another example. But the track itself is good. This course's operations just needs some tweaks, like a paid supervisor to oversee all the volunteers.
Good condition as usual
We come in Arizona every year and we like to play this course. The front nine and the back nine are so different.
Overall in good shape. Green little slow but not unpleasant.
Nothings Changed
Played this course many times. It’s always overbooked and the staff is not accommodating at all. I played the course again under the pretense that it was under new management. Because of the name change I was suckered into giving it another try. If you don’t mind 5 plus hr rounds and unfriendly staff the golf course is a beautiful layout. Such a shame that this golf course is managed by people that don’t like their jobs.
Everything was great except the 4% water fee. Not sure if it was for the bottle of water in the cooler or a surcharge for water to water the course. Either way I didn't like it and was not told to expect it when I made the tee time or when I paid.
Greens are fuzzy- staff is still arrogant
Just because they changed their name to San Tan Highlands doesn’t make them better. Staff acts like they are in Scottsdale not San Tan. Nice new carts were impressive. Greens are still fuzzy from overseed. Beware of $4 dollar water charge for the 2 bottles of Walmart water they put in your cooler- total rip-off.
Favorite desert course
This course is amazing. It gives you the classic desert mountain course on the back nine, and a neighborhood desert course on the front nine. The staff, accommodations, facilities, are all top notch. I played this course several times of the last 7 years, and hands down it is my favorite course in Arizona
Pace of Play
Pace of play was slow because starter put out twosomes instead of combining into foursomes and didn’t maintain start time intervals. We waited on every shot as did the twosome in front of us and the group behind.
Making efforts to be better!
With the name change, from Johnson Ranch to San Tan Highlands, it is apparent they are attempting to get better...from an operational perspective to the condition of the course. Congratz! When we played they were just coming off of their reseed, so the greens were still a bit fuzzy and slow (understandable). They still rely heavily on a volunteer staff, so that is perhaps their weaker area of the operation. Other than that, nice course for the money.
Just wanted to say thank you for your insightful comment, and for your patience as we ensure the overseed grass has a chance to take hold to ensure perfect winter conditions!
And thank you for being perceptive: I confirm we're working proactively to elevate the experience at San Tan Highlands, and promise we'll keep at it. Thanks again for golfing with us!

Slow play and unfriendly starting staff
We were supposed to start off at 10:10. There were two sets of foursomes waiting.
We alerted the starters of the issue, and they said “yeah, what about it?” How about letting us know, correcting the pace of play, and getting it right?
It took us 6 1/2 hours to play 18.
This new management and poor attitude is very poor.
Kudos to the afternoon ranger, who was very sympathetic and trying to get things corrected.

Thank you for leaving a review, and thanks for the compliment about the new carts! We're glad they've finally arrived.
Just to clarify, the water bottles placed in each cart's cooler is a small (free) token we provide in the hopes of elevating your experience at San Tan Highlands. The "4% Water Resource Fee" (not $4) is unrelated: that goes to offset the cost of irrigation water in Arizona, as well to ensure the club stays in compliance with ADWR's 5th Management Plan, which restricts golf course irrigation water usage.
Hope that's helpful. Here's to hoping your next experience at San Tan Highlands will happen, and will be better for you. Thanks again for golfing with us!
With very best regards,
Dave Ashton
