San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

Great course. Technically perfect for me. I am a weekly player with not much of a game. Difficulty was great as well. The obstacles and “obstructions” were there but made the greens very reachable. Just a very fun course and laid out nicely. Only issue was a large amount of mowed grass left on the fairways. The exterior fringe was “mushy” not wet at all but grass was bubbly feeling. Beautiful course and marshals were a pleasure to talk to. Could not have asked for a better. Can’t wait to play again when I am back in town.

Thank you,

California Charles

Rude staff

My first time playing here. I like the course layout, and it was in good condition. The pro shop staff were rude. I'll spend my money somewhere else.

1st Hole in one!

I hit my 1st ever Hole in One on the par 3 11th Hole. It's listed as 140 yards from the blue tees, but the day we played the pin was up front with a slight left to right wing across the hole. I hit a very light 9 iron slightly into the wind. Ball started left but the wind held it up and my ball bounced right at the front of the green and then dribbled twice before dropping into the cup.

The course is in great shape and very challenging. They have new golf carts and the pace of play was pretty decent - we saw the ranger twice on our round.

I love everything about this course.

Slow play

Changed the courses name but still the same slow play!!! Round took 5 hours???? Waited on practically every shot all day. Saw the marshal several times but never came close enough to complain to. Had to be blind not to see the course backed up any. Has happened practically every time we’ve played there.

Great course

The lowland/highland layout is great. Pace of play is an issue. Ranger needs to be a bit more proactive.

Pace of Play

Bunkers could use some sand, greens were slow and pace of play needs a lot of work.

Always liked this course, but found the usual problems….

I like this course. The people are friendly, like the layout. But as usual, they were way behind. Tee time was 1:37pm, so I knew there was a chance I wouldn’t finish. Tee’d off at 2:05pm after the starter said they were on time. Pace of play was ridiculously slow, although the Ranger was working on speeding things up. You can only do so much, I realize that. Got 13 holes in. By way of comparison, played Lone Tree yesterday with a 1:20pm. Finished, had time for one or two more holes. Play Johnson Ranch, but don’t book past 1 pm.

San Tan Highlands Golf

Pace of play on the first 3 holes was slow, but picked up later. The tee time processing for Swing First Cardholders needs to be improved so pricing for the round is shown when making the reservation. For the price, the course is manicured well. Greens were very good.

Course Conditions

This is a great course for the price, however, the pace of play could be improved along with sand in the bunkers. Greens were slow maybe due the recent seeding and aerating of the course.
