San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

Course just came out of overseed. Everything was in great shape. Have played this course over the past 20 year several times. The current superintendent is doing great work. Always tough to keep pubilc course in good shape. Well worth making the short drive. Go play!

Getting a little too full of themselves..

Despite what the folks at Johnson Ranch think, this is not TPC Sawgrass.

You used to be able to play this course for $25, which felt appropriate for the staff quality, greens and fairways, but they’re charging around $80 these days. What’s changed besides the price? Not much. The Marshalls still berate you and follow you around the course, looking for an opportunity to flex the minuscule amount of power they have. There’s still no water on the course. The greens are inconsistent and poorly managed. The starters are rude and act like you’re playing at an exclusive country club. I could go on.

This used to be an excellent course, with room for beginners and veterans. They’ve priced out the beginners and don’t offer a product good enough for the veterans.

My advice? Next time you get to Johnson Ranch, get back in your car and drive up the road to Poston Butte, or back to Power Ranch. You’ll have a better experience and save yourself a few bucks.

Much better since new ownership

This place used to be extremely unfriendly. I’m a single handicap golfer and Marshalls used to treat you like you were up to no good on their course. They seem to have gotten the message and cooled down a lot. Back nine is still gorgeous.

Carts at 90*

Not a big fan of fake grass but the new tee on #11 is a vast improvement to the poor real grass tee that was always divoted to destruction.Hope it can take the abuse! Course will be great soon.

Thank you for noticing this! We of course love natural grass but - like you - over the years noticed that the natural grass tee box on #11 simply wasn't able to stay in a condition that reflects the standards we try to uphold. Or as you put it better: "was always divoted to destruction". :)

So we've changed it, and hope it's a permanent improvement. Thanks for taking notice! We hope to see you again soon.

With very best regards,

Dave Ashton

Neighborhood course

I think the staff is local neighborhood volunteers. Nobody wants to take accountability. Ice machine broken 🤷🏻‍♂️ three locals allowed to cut in front of us on ten tee box 🤷🏻‍♂️ no help at bag drop or cart return 🤷🏻‍♂️ Local neighborhood course wanting to attract customers by changing name. Need to change mindset of volunteers.

Course is coming along great after overseeding. Need to see more off the beverage cart, only seen it once in 18 holes.

Prices

I love this course, have been playing here for years. I think it’s over priced for a round. I also think the drinks are way over priced.

Back Nine is Beautiful

I'd like to come back and play when it is not cart path only and the course is back to normal conditions after overseeding. The only suggestion I would make is to put more trash cans on the front nine and put ball washers at each hole. Other than that the course is very nice and worth the money.
