Editor's Note: Course closed in 2018. See The Phoenician Golf Club listing.

The Phoenician resort is known for its three unique nines, which offer not three challenging 18-hole combination but also stunning views of the Valley of the Sun. The Desert/Canyon Course is the most requested layout because of its particularly stunning vistas. The Desert Course is known for its dramatic elevation changes that climb up to the Canyon nine situated on the southern slope of Camelback Mountain. The golf course is not long but it proves that holes don't have to be lengthy to provide a good challenge. Golfers will need careful strategy as well as sharp short game skills in order to take on the water hazards and strategically placed bunkers. The par-4 third hole on the Desert nine is particularly tricky thanks to a green that is surrounded on nearly all of its sides.

Mud Bog

I was fully prepared for aeration, but I was not prepared for how muddy this course was. I played at ~11am and you have thought they deep-soaked it 5 mins before I tee'd off. Zero roll out and if you didn't pick the ball clean, you ended up with a huge clump of mud on the end of your club. I realize this is a transitionary period for the grass, but I've never played on a course this muddy during transition. They need to close it down until it dries out a bit or ease up on the water. I've played several courses in transition over the past couple of weeks and this was, by far, the worst shape. Layout was fine, bunkers were fine, pace of play wasn't bad since there weren't many people out there. Nice track when it's dry. If I had paid full price, I would have asked for my money back.

Not in great shape for the price

Not trying to be overly critical because I know it’s that time of year for dry/dead fairways in Phoenix, but for $100 I expected better conditions. Greens were 8/10. Plenty of other courses for half the price this time of year with similar or better conditions.

Round at Phoenician

This is my second time playing this course. I like the old design better especially for the finishing hole. 18 is funky, a fairly long par four where you have to cut the corner over newly built Homes/Condos to get in good position for a short iron in. I'm pretty sure they will put up screens when the homes are complete which will cut off that option. You can hit it straight but your second shot will be 200 yards plus to a peninsula green. We played during the summer reseed and the Bermuda grass was not fully in so there were many wet bare spots that you had to hit off of. We decided to play lift clean and replace since the fairways where so spotty. Overall good course. The men's locker room up-stairs bar are exceptional.

Challenge

We were able to play a bit sooner then our tee time which was helpful in the 100 plus degree weather ..fair was brown n patchy but greens were ok...it was pricey for a 11am tee time...could be better

Too much construction

Apparently, they decided they could make more $ by taking away 1 of the three Nines they used to have and building lots of condos, homes, and suites in its place.

The construction distracted from the play and it is ruining many of the vistas it used to have.

We got to play for a Hot Deal price of about $70 ea but a month ago it was $250 each. I would have been really mad if we had paid the higher price.

great course, slow play!

Three foursomes ahead of us made play dreadfully slow. The folks we could see were pulling the flag on ever green and taking too long to putt! We could not find a marshall to report this to. Told the cart girl. Love your course but you need to keep folks moving better.

nice round

Always enjoy playing at the Phoenician. Greens were in great shape. A little costly for my weekly golf budget, so I only get to play it about once a year.

Wet conditions

There was a lot of dead grass and newly planted grass areas. With that because they watered the gras it was very wet and swampy on multiple holes and not good playing conditions for a 9am tee time.
