Editor's Note: Course closed in 2018. See The Phoenician Golf Club listing.

The Phoenician resort is known for its three unique nines, which offer not three challenging 18-hole combination but also stunning views of the Valley of the Sun. The Desert/Canyon Course is the most requested layout because of its particularly stunning vistas. The Desert Course is known for its dramatic elevation changes that climb up to the Canyon nine situated on the southern slope of Camelback Mountain. The golf course is not long but it proves that holes don't have to be lengthy to provide a good challenge. Golfers will need careful strategy as well as sharp short game skills in order to take on the water hazards and strategically placed bunkers. The par-4 third hole on the Desert nine is particularly tricky thanks to a green that is surrounded on nearly all of its sides.

Little value

Regardless of cost, when you sit for 15 minutes on the T box hole after hole, it simply detracts from the rhythm of the game. Ultimately the pace of play became extremely slow and we left the course after the 15th hole. Secondly, there is a significant amount of facility construction, and the laborers are clueless about golf etiquette. I would hope someone in management takes their position seriously. No evidence of same on Friday.

Beautiful!

We played the Desert and Canyon for our 18. On almost every hole, the view of Camelback Mountain, the valley, Phoenix, and the actual golf holes are breathtaking. People might even pay to just rides the cart and take in the view. The course was fun to play. The staff was friendly and helpful. It was a fun day.

Amazing experience on and off the course.

From the moment we turned off of Camelback into the resort we had smiles ear to ear. The resort is beautiful, well laid out, manicured landscaping and ultra friendly staff. It was our first time playing here, and definitely not our last. We played Desert/Canyon 18, the course at this time of year is very green and lush, not burnt out at all. The design is challenging but playable and fair. I read some reviews of it being shorter, it may be, but this is a definite must play in the valley and did not play "short". The practice faculty is also in mint condition, again lush and the greens rolled true just as on the course. I can't say again how happy we are with the Phoenician and can't wait to play here again next time in town. Ps. Bring a camera or a good camera phone, amazing views from many tee boxes!!!

Close to perfect

Loved the layout. Staff was very friendly. We were finished within 4 hours. My only complaint is the bunkers. Unfortunately, I was in quite a few bunkers and the material under the sand with showing in a lot of areas. The bunkers need some sand in them. Other than that the fairways were in great condition the greens were running fantastic... great experience. Best compliment anybody can give is... I would go back.

Seemed like Marshall would push us even thou we were not playing slow not giving us time to look for golf balls so he could find them.

Good round, a bit pricey

I played Canyon/Oasis course. Perfect weather and great company for the round. The course was in great shape with a bunch of different type of holes (water, dogleg, blind shots). Great practice facilities (watch out on the 8th hole of the Oasis course). The course is a bit pricey, but is connected to a resort, so it is expected.

First time at the Phoenician

For your reference, my guy shoots around 80 and I average around 93. This course is very scenic. He thinks it was pretty good, maybe its not long enough for big hitters (approx 6200 yards from the tips.) I loved it. Not overly easy, not so difficult either. I absolutely enjoyed every whole. We did not get to play the Oasis nine.... we played Desert then Canyon for our 18 holes. You do not have a wide berth, yet there are truly no narrow holes on those nines. Great couples course, we would go back for sure to get the Oasis in :-)

The course is in wonderful condition.

Great course! The day we played was windy which added to the difficulty of play. We enjoy the course and would play again.

Tricked up

The courses are unnecessarily tricky. Probably the result of sticking 27 holes into a space that would easily have accommodated 18 good holes.

Beautiful course

We played all 3 courses which gave us a good comparison. The Canyon and Desert courses were in the best shape and had the most majestic views. All courses are not too difficult that the higher handicapper gets too frustrated but yet challenging enough for the low handicap players. Staff is friendly and accommodating course was in great shape. We had an enjoyable round of golf.

Views are fantastic

Played Oasis and Desert.. The Oasis is the easiest of the three courses. Lots of water though. When we previously played the Cayon the last four holes were extremely hard. It, may have been that number 6, by entry to resort, seemed unfair and we set ourselves up for difficulty on the last three holes. The Desert is our favorite because of the views of Scottsdale and Phoenix from the back of Camelback mountain.

Really great conditions after some rain in the Phoenix area. Very interesting holes that attract the eye and make each tee box a joy.

This Course is not as Special as it Used to Be

When I discovered a last minute tee-time at the Phoenician for $99 while visiting Scottsdale for a conference, I jumped on it. I played it about ten years ago and recalled a short but fun track that was in immaculate condition with remarkable landscaping. While the fairways and greens were fine, the rough was dormant Bermuda, and the bunkers and some of the tee boxes were terrible, especially on the short par threes. It's certainly not in the same condition that it once was. While still a fair value at $99 during the high season in Scottsdale, there are other courses in the area I would have rather played.
