Hillcrest Golf Club at Sun City West
About
Hillcrest Golf Club possesses a championship length course that offers a great variety of game options with five sets of tees. The course has a traditional design that features open fairways lined with trees, which put a premium on straight shots. The greens vary greatly with some that are relatively flat and medium sized and others that are quite large and dramatically sloped or multi-tiered. In addition to several sand bunkers, water hazards in the forms of lakes and ponds come into play. The signature hole is the par-5 13th, which has been touted by the Phoenix Gazette as being on of the best holes in the state. Hillcrest Golf Club not only has a dogleg around a lake, the hole requires an approach shot uphill to a green that is guarded by eight bunkers.

Little Rough
Course conditions were a little rough. Long grass in the fairways, greens were rough. A couple of the tee boxes were closed. One hole was closed.
Horrible Course Conditions
I have tried to give this course so many chances to redeem itself because it has a good layout but the course conditions are absolutely the WORST!. For starters, I was subsequently told after I had already paid for my round the the outside staff that 3 of the tees (3,6, and 9) were under construction and temp tees must be used. This would be fine if the temp tees were at least playable but they didn't even cut them down to be usable. Additionally I was told the 14th hole was completely closed and unable to play. In essence, I payed for 18 holes, could only play 17 of them and 3 of the 17 were under construction. This would have been good information before I paid to play.
Better yet....offer a discount.
The fairways like always were overwatered and soaking wet. The sand traps were either full of water or at best not even raked so any shot out of them was like hitting out of dirt. The rough (if you want to call it that) was 4 to 5 inch grass littered with weeds. The greens were in fairly decent shape but very slow.
No rangers or marshal on the course and the 3-some in front of us was 2 holes behind from holes 5 to 17 without even offering to play through which held up the entire course.
Save your money and play other courses in the Sun City as this is by far one of the worst to play in the area.
Better Info Needed
The course was fun as always, however, when there are multiple tee boxes under repair, and an entire hole closed, I feel like there should be a disclaimer when booking the tee time.
Good shape with all of the maintainence
Several tee boxes were closed for repair and temporary ones were added. Hole 14 was closed and lots of turf repair all over the course. With this said, course was nice to play. Greens were soft and in much better shape than most this time of year. I started early, so course was soupy in places, but what else are you going to do in Arizona. Just the fact that they are working to improve the course means I will be back soon.
Work in progress
It’s a work in progress for sure. Fairways have not been cut and lost 2 balls in the middle of the fairway due to grass height. Over watered in a lot of spots and the traps are basically tiny pebbles. Greens are good but a bit slow. Hard to tell where to drive the cart or even hit on some fairways. Overall a good practice course if your not keeping score. Sorry was a bit disappointment. Glad I only paid $40.
Torn Up Course
Though no where mentioned in the reservation process, the course is undergoing renovation work. Large areas of ground have been tilled over presumably to restore those areas and prepare the course for the winter season. There were also areas that were not mowed and were allowed to grow into deep grass and weeds. These may all be due to challenges the course faced during the heat wave, but so many other courses seem to have fared much better. Hopefully, the course gets straightened out through the overseed process set to occur in another 2 months. Right now the course is not playable to anyone who claims to be a golfer.
Course under major repairs
Played this course because my buddy wanted to. #14 is closed. At least 3 other tee boxes were under repair. Lots of places where the ground is under repair.
Once repairs are completed i think it'll be fine but it wasn't worth the $30 we paid.
Check back in a couple months though

Was in better shape than I thought.
Always a great time. 14th Par 3 was closed? Next time just note that when people make a tee time.
Always friendly and helpful staff. Thx for making HC an enjoyable place to play. DT
What happened?!?
This course used to be decent. Understandedly they were trying to fix several things. That being said, a notice during the booking would have been nice. After check in and paying $40, we were told several tee boxes were being redone and had been moved. The 14rh hole was completely closed and several spots had been tilled recently as it was fresh turned dirt. The fairways were spotty and water logged and they had the majority of the sprinklers running during morning play. The greens were ok, but that's about it. I wouldn't have given $20 to play this course with the current conditions.
Terrible course conditions
This course is in very rough shape with puddles all over the fairways and especially the roughs with extremely patchy grass if there was any. Sprinkles were on every hole for the first 5 and all fairways were soaked to the point the water splashed up into the cart driving through the middle of the fairway. 90% of the bunkers had large puddles in the them rendering them unplayable. Multiple tee boxes under construction and hole 14 was closed. I paid just as much as i did a week ago to golf at talking stick, definitely not worth 30$.
Course Under Construction
Many of the T boxes were freshly leveled with dirt and unusable, had to find a decently flat piece of turf to hit tee shot. Greens were in decent condition although hole #14 was unplayable and had to skip it. Fairways have many, many pot holes and needs leveling, if you aren’t careful your drink can fly right out of the cup holder. I paid $24 for the round and for an extra $3-$4 you can play a decent course that has 18 holes that are playable. The cart attendant at the end of the round was very friendly and I tipped him well because he must have a tough job dealing with unhappy golfers
Poor shape
Course is challenging, but course has been neglected a lot of dry spots and greens are in rough shape.
A Warm Day at Hillcrest
Got a great Hotdeal and played this challenging course. Greens were a bit rough and had not been mowed...so putting was not great. Fairways were like summer AZ fairways, had some bare spots and were on the longish side. Pace of play was very good because I was about the only one playing. Could have used more water stations on the course...hot days require water. Overall not a bad day golfing...will be back and hoping the greens are more up-to-speed.
This course needs a lot of TLC
I attempted to excuse the poor condition of the fairways and greens because of the hot weather conditions but was not able to after considering the other golf courses, that have been subjected to the same weather conditions, that I have played recently. The ground crew was watering to the point of soggy fairways in their efforts to regrow grass to no avail. The fairways and greens were not only soggy but were bare and brown making it difficult to determine the where the fairways were. The course layout is confusing due to the dead fairways making it a challenge to determine which green and fairway you were playing. You were better off playing from the rough, which was also brown and spotty, but better that playing off the dirt in the dead fairways. This was by far this course was in the absolute worst shape of any course that I have experienced. I have played this course in the past, it was in fair shape then but in much worse shape now, I doubt that I will play this course again.
Nice layout but many bare spots in the fairways.
The greens were in good condition but there were numerous bare spots in the fairways
