Rating 72.7

Hillcrest Golf Club possesses a championship length course that offers a great variety of game options with five sets of tees. The course has a traditional design that features open fairways lined with trees, which put a premium on straight shots. The greens vary greatly with some that are relatively flat and medium sized and others that are quite large and dramatically sloped or multi-tiered. In addition to several sand bunkers, water hazards in the forms of lakes and ponds come into play. The signature hole is the par-5 13th, which has been touted by the Phoenix Gazette as being on of the best holes in the state. Hillcrest Golf Club not only has a dogleg around a lake, the hole requires an approach shot uphill to a green that is guarded by eight bunkers.

Declining Overall Course Conditions

I’ve been playing this course intermittently over the past three decades. The fairways were in some of the best condition ever, primarily due to the heavy rainfall this year. The greens were also in good shape. Most golf courses in Arizona have benefited from the winter rains. However, the problem lies outside the fairways, sand traps, and tee boxes. The excessive dirt areas, rocky sand traps, and divoted tee boxes require attention. Maintenance is the issue. It seems they’ve been spending money recklessly at the course for years, reinvesting only to improve the appearance. It’s disheartening to witness. Additionally, there’s no beverage cart on the course during play.

Good

Been playing the course for years. Overall, the general condition is very good, but there were a lot of broken water pipes making a fair amount of the course drenched in water and muddy.

so much potential

beautiful day, paired up with 3 other great guys. first time playing hillcrest-tee boxes, fairways and greens were really decent. many of the fairways and areas around the greens were pure dirt. need to shut down and churn up bare dirt areas, re-seed and re-establish designated cart paths as i believe it is the errant carts that beat up the areas aforementioned. yes, easy for me to say, but...a nice challenging course that was 3/4's there but a very important 1/4 made a lot of difference. go play it so they hopefully spend the extra money on those improvements and it could become a hidden gem

Tina - Iowa

Course was easy to get on. Was pretty full front nine then cleared up so we could play faster. A lot of geese on this course so not very clean. Over all it is a 45.00 course

Awesome outing

Everything for the course is awesome, the only issue is this being my second time playing here is start times are just an idea, I was talking to the pro shop and said I may need to start a few minutes late but before the next tee time. He said ok but he sent the 6 couples out 9 minutes early. My prior time had the 3 o’clock tee time he sent me out at 242.

Fun track

Being the only course we could get on before 3:00 on The Open weekend our expectations weren't overly high. But the course was fun. Greens were rolling. Beer was cold. Scenery was good. Price was right. Glad we played.

Good day

Exceptional course layout. Unfortunately, some rough edges on some tee boxes, fairways, cart paths and surroundings.

Greens are generally quite good and have challenging contours.

Decent value for the price.

This was once a premiere course in Phoenix which is evident when you experience it.

Dogleg Water Par 5’a

I’ve always enjoyed playing this course bang for your bucket. It’s hard to beat. The greens are super fun and undulating and usually they got them rolling at at least a 10 or 11 love the dog leg par fives high risk reward to cut corners. There’s some dirt spots in the bunker a few of them could use a little bit of work, but overall really good value for what you pay to play and the people are great out there.

Much improved

I have not played Hillcrest in several years because the course conditions were so poor..

It was much improved this time. The greens were in good shape and very fast.

Fairways were cut too close but also in good shape.

I wish there were paved cart paths. The dirt/gravel was not well maintained.

I will be going back.
