About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
The Golf Club at Vistoso in Tucson has never seemed willing to cower in the presence of its resort-course cousins. Paloma and Ventana are golf resorts, but the Golf Club at Vistoso is just a golf course, and a fine one at that. This Tom Weiskopf-designed layout was a "readers write-in" Golf Magazine's "Top 100 you can play," and is a "sneaky" favorite among locals and visitors alike. The layout is nowhere near as penal as Ventana or La Paloma, and if you can find better greens in the greater Tucson area, let us know. Take note of the 166-yard, par-3 third hole -- on a clear day (there are only 323 of them) you will have an amazing view of the north side of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Excellent value for June at 105 dgrees
The course was in excellent shape for the June. The greens ran true.
Which way?
With the temps climbing into the triple digits, I decided to take advantage of some super affordable golf. Before I knew it, I was at Vistoso, wherei was greeted with unopened arms. No big deal. I didn't come for the hugs, I came to play golf. Since I'd forgotten to charge my GPS unit, I downloaded the club's very own app. Using a yardage from the app, I promptly hit my approach to the first over the green and into the brush. For the rest of the round, my skepticism of the app grew into a healthy mistrust of the hard markers on the course as well. This problem came to a head when I realized that there were no overhead views of the golf course available anywhere. Not on the scorecard...not on the app...and not on the pin sheet. A serious problem when you consider that a number of holes have partially or entirely hidden landing areas. As my partner and I stumbled blindly around the course, I noticed a number of the landing areas would benefit from slightly raised tees. Not to make shots easier or shorter, but to balance the ratio of fairway-to-desertscape visible from the tee. This minor change, if made, would inspire greater confidence in golfers of all skill levels. Thereis a driveable par 4 with nothing to aid the golfer's aim. It's the worst short 4 I've ever seen. It should be an exhilarating test of mettle, but is instead just a puzzle everyone could/would have played differently if they'd had any clue where to aim. The intelligence typically provided on an overhead view might have done the trick here. Aside from those things, I was still able to enjoy my round. This is a good golf course, but the quirks I mentioned made it noticeably less so. I'm sure locals don't notice these things anymore, but on your first visit (like mine) you'll struggle unnecessarily on this course unless someone in your group has local knowledge.
Summer Duldrums
Last winter the course was picking up. Did not see that in the summer. The fairways, tee boxes and greens were in good shape for summer. The ice machine at the practice green has a problem working in the summer. Hello, it's hot out there! They did have a lot of water jugs on the course with ice in them. The practice facility is now included in the price.
Bad bathroom
Men's room at practice area smelled horribly. It needed cleaning! TP not on spool, lacking paper towels. No cups for water dispenser and no ice at starter's area. I still drive from Starr Pass to play.
vistoso
Course conditions excellent, $30 for a rohnd of golf and including lunch is an outstanding deal, they also have a three round pass for $60, could now be a local home favorite
Well watered for summer
No brown spots. Fairways are as green as tee boxes, and of course, greens.
Good playing conditions
I had a great time. The course is in great condition for the time of the year.
In Good Shape (for June...)
The course is in pretty good shape for June and definitely worth playing for the low prices you can find on golfnow. The greens are smooth and quick and the fairways are looking pretty good with just a few brownout spots.
Vistoso
Good variety, beautiful scenery, and a great value
Summer Golf
Course was in solid condition given the intense heat and the rumors of the course being in the worst shape ever. The course was wide open, if I didn't have my son I could have played 18 holes in 3 hrs or less if desired. Great value for summer golf in Tucson.
not the Vistoso of old or even of new
Not the Vistoso of old, although in recent weeks the course has been partially restored to its old glory but lately it is getting burned up by the June heat. The course is always tough with many forced carries. We played the gold tees, perhaps a bit more challenging than necessary. Although conditions are deteriorating I do wish management all the best in their efforts to restore this course to what it once was.
Good value for the money
Starting to dry up from summer heat, lunch is excellent
Great Value
This is a fun and challenging course. When they throw in lunch with the deal you can't beat it.
make friends
I got the round for great price on GolfNow.com, but was paired with a huge pain in the behind. Every shot took him half an hour to hit because he wanted to let us know how good he was and how far he can hit each club in the bag. Should have walked off the course that day, he drug my game down to his level. MAKE FRIENDS and play this course with people you know, get the yardage book, there are a few blind shots. Good course, I will return after I assemble my own 4 some.
Great Course
It was second my time golfing here and I just love it. The views are amazing. The course is kept in great shape. Free practice on the driving range beforehand. Overall a great experience.
Vistoso
This course was in marvelous shape. We played the course in under 4 hours as a threesome. I lost a lot of golf balls, definitely a target golf course. I would live to play it again.
Good Track
Course was in good condition. Very windy conditions required extra thought on some holes. Only negative was a lack of beverage cart on the course.
A favorite
I have played Vistoso on and off for about ten years but this is the first time in awhile. I took advantage of an on line lunch, range ball, cart offer. The lunch was excellent and service was good. No starter meant a backup at number one so I played the back first and saw nobody. It took about an hour and fifteen minutes so went to first tee again only to find it was backed up so went to ten and played the back again. I saw nobody again. What I did see was a great layout in need of some TLC. Minimal staff, no marshals, no starter. It would be great if someone with deep pockets were to buy the course, it has really good bones and just needs to be spruced up a bit. Some carry's are long for short hitters but there are four sets of tees so you should be able to find the right set to match your game.
The course is a good challenge for men. However, the carry for many women golfers is difficult.
I will play this course as often as I can. However, my wife will not, as the carry over the desert takes away the from the fun of the game. Also the sand traps are thin and often very wet.
