About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
The Golf Club at Vistoso in Tucson has never seemed willing to cower in the presence of its resort-course cousins. Paloma and Ventana are golf resorts, but the Golf Club at Vistoso is just a golf course, and a fine one at that. This Tom Weiskopf-designed layout was a "readers write-in" Golf Magazine's "Top 100 you can play," and is a "sneaky" favorite among locals and visitors alike. The layout is nowhere near as penal as Ventana or La Paloma, and if you can find better greens in the greater Tucson area, let us know. Take note of the 166-yard, par-3 third hole -- on a clear day (there are only 323 of them) you will have an amazing view of the north side of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

recommend for good golfers only
every tee shot is a forced carry of anywhere from 145 to 175 yards.
this makes difficult for players not able to carry ball in air that distance.
Play this one, you'll be glad you did!
Great experience !!! The course was beautiful and challenging . Well maintained course! Great staff Mountain views . I will be back soon.
This course is a great value! Excellent views and fair.
Extremely disappointed in the pace of play. NO RANGERS were observed on the course all day long. We played as a twosome and I more than expect the round to be slower, but more than 5 hours to play is REDICULOUS.
This one-time jewel is on a comeback.
This was my first time on the course since late summer. The summer course conditions was sad and I was convinced that the course was not far from closing. However, having given it another try just before Thanksgiving was a pleasant surprise. Not only was the course in great shape, but I actually observed staff on the course working to make improvements. The staff greeted my group and checked on us during the round. The starter was precise is his directions. Several years ago, this was one of the best courses in Southern Arizona. I am not ready to state that it is once again at that level, but the turnaround from last summer is remarkable.
Not in top shape but very interesting
I played early morning 9:00 with a member and we just flew around the course as if we were alone on the course took only 3 hours. Even though the course was not in top shape ( fairways a bit long and greens slow) it was very interesting playing there. Loved the layout with different difficulties on each hole. If I do return to Arizona for golf in a diffent season I will certainly return to try the course when in top shape.
This is a professionally designed and well kept resort course.
This deal was incredible! Our discounted price included green fees, a cart, lunch with a beer, and range balls. All of this was for less than the advertised green fee rate, at this outstanding Tom Weiskopf designed golf course. We had a fantastic round and a great deal. Sure to play again soon!
great time !!
course was in good shape overall, greens a little bumpy, but the layout and the experience was great. Golfed with three good guys, which can make or break the fun of the game.
Much better
This course is one of my favorites, but was suffering recently. Played on November 16 and course in great shape. Staff always friendly and a great value. Give it another chance. You won't be disappointed
Great layout with huge greens.
Very enjoyable to play. Only issue was the bumpy greens
Good Golf, Bad Hot Dogs :)
I enjoyed this course. The fairways were mostly well maintained. The greens were a bit bumpy and a couple were still a bit sandy. I would think these issues will go away once the reseeding is complete. Several challenging holes as this is a true desert course, so you need to be accurate off the tee. The course offers some beautiful views of the mountains.
Avoid the hot dogs at all costs....my round came with a meal and this was the only thing they had ready unless I wanted to wait 20 minutes. I would reccomend calling the grill before you hit the turn. This is a minor complaint as noted by the smiley face LOL.
Good course, very well maintained, greeat value
With the price and lunch included it was a great deal. The lunch was anything off the menu but be careful. Most of the items were not prepared before hand so it takes them up to an hour or more to prepare some items so if you want it ready at the turn best order it around the 4th or 5th hole or 13th or 14th if you are lunching after your round. Course was well maintained and a joy to play.
Great course in good condition. (greens had just been top dressed)
The course is in good condition. The greens were top dressed on 11/12/13 so they were a little slow. The fairways and tees were well maintained. The package they offered included a great lunch consisting of anything on the menu.
The staff was very friendly.
The only negative is they need to clean their on course bathrooms. They were almost unusable.
Challenging course with beautiful scenery, yardage markers were rare
It is a nice course with beautiful scenery, but very challenging. You have to hit over desert areas off the tee box more times than not, and its not a short distance. In fact, I think you had to hit over desert on every hole! There are yardage poles on many of the holes, but other than that, yardage markers are very rare and yardage distances are really needed on this course. In addition to that, this was our first time every playing this course. If we had not played with someone who had played it before, we would of had lots of trouble, because from the tee box you did not know where the green was on many holes. When we decided to play this course there were the little boxes/pictures that indicated a golf cart and range balls were included. When we received our confirmation, range balls were not indicated. At check-in they said range balls were not included, so we had to pay $8.00 for balls, per person, and we thought that was too expensive, as we only wanted to hit a few balls to warm up. The practice area was nice though. Overall though it was a good experience, not great, just good.
Challenging Course with great views
The course presents a challenge to your golf gameAccuracy and distance control are factors on the majority of holes. The course is in great condition and the views are spectacular. The staff was wonderful.
This course has intimidating layouts
The course was in excellent shape. The greens were still a little slow but good grass on them. Love playing this layout. Not suited for beginners or those who can't get the ball up in the air, some long carries.
BAD EXPERIENCE
Slow and patchy greens were unplayable. Round took forever and the ranger allowed a group in front of us to be three holes behind. Wanted $8 to use the driving range and only told us after we had paid for the round.
Lots of work to be done on this course
Would not recommend this course for women unless you can consistently drive in the air, 80 to 100 yards. Simply not designed to give women a break either in driving or in their many tree and desert weed filled trenches running thru the course.
Greens were horrible. Not rolled and ball bounced to the cup...we decided to take a two when you reach the green and move on .
Want golf vista's, this is the place. Beautiful potential but much work with the customer and greens before I will ever go back.
Want a bucket of balls....not on this course. There is a $8.00 each "warm up" charge to hit balls on their practice course.
2nd visit just as good as the first
Rattler/Roadrunner layout is superb. Played silvers with three others. Significantly easier than the golds (6500 yds) played on Monday. Still need to carry numerous dry washes, but there are no gimmicks. Tees, fairways and greens in great condition. This is the nicest desert course I've played. I walked it again, and it's still a challenge -- a lot of ups and downs, some steep.
excellant course. well worth the money
WE ENJOYED THIS COURSE, ALTHOUGH IT WAS A CHALLENGE TO BE SURE. THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR ME WAS THE 140YD. CARRY, TO CLEAR THE WASHES, OFF THE TEE, ON AT LEAST 8 HOLES. THE GREENS WERE WELL BUNKERED AND STRATEGICALY PLACED...IT WAS CART PATHS ONLY SO THERE WAS A LOT OF WALKING....THE COURSE LAY-OUT WAS EXCELLANT AND THE MOUNTAIN VISTAS BEAUTIFUL.
Tired and neglected, once a 10, golf corse.
For the low price the course was worth playing just for the experience. Greens were inconsistent in speed and most bumpy. Trap sand was very thin especially in the bottom (almost hard pan ). Fairways ok, but not as kept as expected.
No amenities, like cups at the water stations or place to get drinks. Layout very interesting in beautiful local. One can only imagine that it was once a gem!
You reviewed the wrong course. Rattler , Roadrunner are the names of 2 of the 9 holes at Marriott Starr Pass
