The Golf Club at Vistoso in Tucson has never seemed willing to cower in the presence of its resort-course cousins. Paloma and Ventana are golf resorts, but the Golf Club at Vistoso is just a golf course, and a fine one at that. This Tom Weiskopf-designed layout was a "readers write-in" Golf Magazine's "Top 100 you can play," and is a "sneaky" favorite among locals and visitors alike. The layout is nowhere near as penal as Ventana or La Paloma, and if you can find better greens in the greater Tucson area, let us know. Take note of the 166-yard, par-3 third hole -- on a clear day (there are only 323 of them) you will have an amazing view of the north side of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

The staff at Vistoso are awesome.
Vistoso has always been a favorite of mine. The course is in the last stages of the overseeding process, and I hope the effort will yield great results. The tee boxes and fairways look pretty good, but at this point the greens are a bit lumpy. Overall, Vistoso is still one of the best courses in Tucson
Fun/Interesting course , but take your rangefinder.
1st time playing this course. Recently overseeded but in good condition. Many forced carries made extremely challenging with 20 - 30 mile an hour crosswinds and headwinds (tough day in Tucson). Take your Sky Caddie or rangefinder as on course yardage marking is inconsistent and infrequent. The $5 yardage book would have been a worthwhile purchase. Not accustomed to paying extra for range balls, but perhaps that's the norm in Tucson. Fun round on a decent course frustrated by Mother Nature's gale force winds. Worth a visit/revisit on a calmer day.
This course is back to what it used to be.
I played this course on Saturday and Sunday. I've played here for approximately 13 years and feel that the conditions have reached a level not seen in several years. They again have balls on the driving range and the driving is the best condition ever. There is a person assigned to make your time at range a pleasure. The starter is experienced and very good at what he does. The pro shops guys are very supportive and helpful. The course is in very great shape. What a pleasant surprise. This couse should be played and the rates are reasonable. I would strongly recommend that that if you haven't played this course in a couple of years due to conditions that it be given another chance. It's back.
Course has potential but needs much more attention.
Many things that were in disrepair last year are still unresolved. The tee boxes were not mowed properly - hardly the condition you'd expect for their opening day.
Fairways cut for overseeding
A review on this course from last week is not a good indication of the course, as the fairways were shaved and brown getting ready for over-seeding the next day. The greens were a little thick, but to be expected prior to over-seeding.
Good Course Bad Timing
This is a Great Course just played it when it was in bad bad Shape cause of overseeding, I think they should WARN you in every Course when is in that CONDITION, I got no warning from Golfnow.com nither from the course, so we played a Bad Shaped course, cheap but in bad shape.
Good for going in to Overseeding
A lot of roll. The corse was dry, getting ready for overseeding.
the course has deteriorated to an unacceptable condition.
the greens, while acceptable, do not minimize the unacceptable fairway conditions. It appears as though it hasn't been watered for quite awhile. But this course is known for it's less than desirable conditions.
Diamond in the Rough
I would say the course was not in the best of shape due to overseeding progress for the fairways and T Boxes due to change of seasons which is common this time of year - That being said was still a pleasure to play - the course cleanliness was not the best - between the trash cans over flowing at some of the t boxes and the rest rooms around the course were terrible - garbage everywhere and just disgusting. The course is still one of my favorites and hope they find some people that care for the maintenance of the basics a little bit more - The GOLFERS should also learn to help with this also.. Pick up your trash..
Excellent location and hole placement
We went when they are planning on reseeding, so the course was basically dead. I can't give a fair review in regards to the grass since the reseeding is a necessary evil. We thought the bunkers and hole placement was really challenging (as there are a lot of blind shots). Given good grass conditions, this course would be excellent.
Food was great, and they gave us free lunch!!
Course was played at summer's end just prior to overseed. Course conditions were not expected to be pristine, but were satisfactory.
I always like playing this course because of the variety of shots required, plus the views are spectacular on every hole.
terrible
Going in we knew that the course would be dry as over seeding is set to happen soon. That's fine, the 25 dollar price was appropriate. What wasn't was the pace of play. We were on the course for 4 hours and had only reached the 14th tee. We waited on every shot starting on the 4th hole. This was us starting at 1040 on a Saturday in September, hardly prime playing time in Tucson. The cart girl saw us on 3 tee but was out of ice and though she promised to return we never saw her again. Marshal didn't address pace either. Overall extremely disappointing. It's no wonder vistoso isn't the course they want it to be. Avoid at any price, it just isn't worth it.
Target Golf
I booked this round for just $25 and when I checked in I was also told lunch was included! I was a bit disappointed to find out they hadn't watered the fairways for a couple of weeks to prepare for over-seeding so they were very tight and dry. Despite this the course played fair and I really enjoyed the round. And the the lunch wasn't just a hot dog but I had my choice of anything on the menu! All in all, a great day on a good course with an outstanding staff!
Course in Transition
While there was no course alert for overseeding they are drying out the course in preparation for it. While I have no doubt that the course will again be in pristine condition, it is not right now. The greens fees are much reduced, but be prepared for some bare patches, overgrown traps, and hard greens. My date of play was mid September, expect an overseeding alert soon.
very challenging
Great course, get the yardage book before you start, lot of holes that are difficult to know where to hit without it.
Greens were well kept
Enjoyed the round of play. Fairways were pretty good except for a spot here and there, but overall were good to play off of. I thought that the greens were nice to putt on, not exceptionally slow nor really fast. I would recommend playing this course and would play it again. Will only get better as the heat goes down.
Course is beautiful with just the right amount of difficulty to make it interesting.
The course is set up perfectly with nothing easily given. Accuracy is key but is one of the funnest courses I have played this year
The Course needs significant maintenance
I realize that this time of year is difficult for golf courses in the Tucson area, as they do not want to spend money on upkeep prior to closing the courses for overseeding. However, Vistoso appears not to have spent any money on basic maintenance issues for many weeks. Specific examples include lack of maintenance of tee boxes and surrounding areas, sand traps are totally unacceptable concrete traps that are being washed out. Fairways are roughs. That being said, the good news that although the greens appear not to have been mowed in over a week are in good condition. If the owner/operator of the course doesn't want to or can't financially afford to take care of this once beautiful course, they should sell it or give it back to the financing source.
Was better when Private owned...like everything!
Rancho Vistoso is a GREAT course, and is beautiful. Being the middle of Summer there are some browned spots here and there, but overall was in good shape. The sad thing is the grounds, landscaping, etc is falling into disrepair. This course used to be great for weddings, events, and more, not to mention one of the top cared for courses in town, since being added to the "Wildcat Trail" group of courses I have heard rumors that it was not as nice, had not played in a while there and got a great deal on here. I was disappointed by the way the entrance, etc are being kept up, there is no snack/drink cart either, so pack accordingly. Still a good value, and a great course that challenges, but planters, etc are looking like they need some help! Some quick cleanup and maintenance can bring this course back to it's glory and I hope they do so in time for winter/spring golf!
