About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
The Golf Club at Vistoso in Tucson has never seemed willing to cower in the presence of its resort-course cousins. Paloma and Ventana are golf resorts, but the Golf Club at Vistoso is just a golf course, and a fine one at that. This Tom Weiskopf-designed layout was a "readers write-in" Golf Magazine's "Top 100 you can play," and is a "sneaky" favorite among locals and visitors alike. The layout is nowhere near as penal as Ventana or La Paloma, and if you can find better greens in the greater Tucson area, let us know. Take note of the 166-yard, par-3 third hole -- on a clear day (there are only 323 of them) you will have an amazing view of the north side of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Poor Conditions
Lack of water, staff that do not care, range balls are horrible, pro shop looks empty. This is used to be my favorite Oro Valley course. It is a shame that the current person in charge has let it go. FInd a buyer and hire a new GM!
Too many blind shots. Should have visual GPS on the carts or give you a yardage book for free.
Proshop had about 12 pieces of clothing...looked like they were going out of business.
great course.. used to be in much better shape.
when we arrived we were told the tee times were running 30 min. late due to a tournament in progress.. pace of play was very slow even after the tournament ended. were no signs of any marshals.
Gorgeous course, well maintained
Gorgeous course, nice desert vegetation with cactus and other succulents. Course is well maintained. Some great holes that require a lot of course management and good ball positioning, especially the par 5s. No need to blast the driver away on every hole since there often are obstacles at 200 or 250 yards. We played at 7:40 in the morning on a thursday, there was nobody in front of us nor behind us, very quite. I heard it get's crowded later in the morning.
Has seen better days
I don't know what the current owner's intention is but they are letting Vistoso go to seed. I am surprised that they still get decent amount of players. The pro shop has like five hats, the range balls are almost dimple-less, and the course is really in a state of disrepair.
I feel sorry for the superintendent whose budget is most likely squeezed to the point of having a tiny staff and no watering $. The bunkers have weeds growing in them, the turf on the range and course is thin, and the tee boxes are like hitting out of the first cut of rough.
It's too bad as the layout is kind of sporting. There are some good holes and some dogs but that is the case most everywhere. I have been playing here off and on for ten years and it is sad to see the direction that the course has taken.
I noticed some flagging of new house lots so maybe they are trying to milk some cash out of lot sales and hopefully will put the proceeds back into the course rather than focusing on paying off the owner's financial investment in the course.
Course Desperately Needs Water
You can tell they must be minimizing their expenses since the water appears to be turned off - it was like playing on concrete. This course has really deteriorated over the years. Very disappointing since we have played this course about 8 times over the last 5 years. It was a beautiful course at one time.
Good test of golf, but man, this course needs to water the fairways!
I was told the course over seeded the fairways for winter, but they stopped watering several weeks ago and the course showed it. The fairways were hard as rock, and the greens were exceedingly firm to try to hold a shot from any longer approach. Yardage markers on sprinkler heads were often absent, and unless one bought the yardage booklet from the pro shop, it was difficult to know any layup distances.
Overall, I liked the layout and would probably enjoy playing it again under better conditions.
A good design but current problems.
Course was challenging and of a good design. They had a dispute with their water company and the water supply to the course had been shut off several weeks. Consequently the fairways were dried out and the overseed had died. The greens and teeing areas were OK. After our round (March 26) the staff told us the disupte had been resolved and the water was back on. A little late for the overseed to recover I believe.
Course is dying due to lack of water
Chalanging course however it is dying due to lack of water. Would not play it again unless new owners take over.
Great course
Driver not needed from gold tee but accuracy is required great course would recommend ......greens in good shape one of the best for the money ........staff was very friendly
Nice setting, an interesting but somewhat difficult course. Pace of play good.
I have played this course twice this month. In the interval the fairways have dried out and need water. The greens and tee boxes are quite firm.
All in all it is one of the nicer courses in NW Tucson on a par with the Preserve and Highlands.
Pretty mountain course. Forced carries for short hitters.
Very challenging for a high handicapper. Course is in good condition. Staff very friendly.
Greens good shape, fairways need more water.
I have played this course many times and the condition is better than last year, but fairways could use more water.
Needs water and some care.
Great layout. Fun course to play. Not in good condition. Needs some tender loving care and water.
Stay Out Of The Cactus
This is a beautiful course, but is fairly tight. You need to bring your "A" game to play this course and enjoy it. Long carries from the tee box to the fairways on a lot of the holes, especially on the back nine. 200 + yard par 3s. Pace of play was very slow as most golfers were constantanly looking for their ball in the desert rough. The clubhouse closed really early, around 3pm I think, which seemed very unusual. Pretty course, difficult to play.
This course had wonderful fairways & greens.
Beautiful area and location. It is obvious they take care of the course as the greens were in terrific shape.
Nice desert course
This is one of those courses you need to play a couple of time to know where to hit some shots. It was in very good condition.
Course was enjoyable but yet challenging
Course was enjoyable but yet challenging. Great views from the course.
Too much money especially since range balls are not free anymore.
Great layout, but some of the forced carries require breaking up foresomes on the tees for those with short hitters. Pretty punishing when one misses the fairway.
