Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
The Golf Club at Vistoso in Tucson has never seemed willing to cower in the presence of its resort-course cousins. Paloma and Ventana are golf resorts, but the Golf Club at Vistoso is just a golf course, and a fine one at that. This Tom Weiskopf-designed layout was a "readers write-in" Golf Magazine's "Top 100 you can play," and is a "sneaky" favorite among locals and visitors alike. The layout is nowhere near as penal as Ventana or La Paloma, and if you can find better greens in the greater Tucson area, let us know. Take note of the 166-yard, par-3 third hole -- on a clear day (there are only 323 of them) you will have an amazing view of the north side of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Greens don't break as much as you think. Use a GPS if you have one as some of the distances on the sprinkler heads seemed off.
We have played the course many times over the past several years but it is noticeably different this season. You now have to pay for range balls and they look like they have been around for several seasons. The range was in pretty good shape but could be better. Overall course was in good condition.
The biggest fault is pace of play. It took us the better part of 5 hours to play. They need to invest in a ranger because we had a group in front of us that morphed into a six-some over the last few holes.
The sand traps were poorly maintained and need to be power raked to ease the compaction. It was like hitting off a concrete highway and many of the rakes were broken.
It should also be noted that both bathrooms near the 1st tee were out of order so you had to go back to the clubhouse. It would have been nice if the starter had mentioned that when we checked in.
While I recommend the course it is only because my wife and I both love the design. Under the current conditions there are probably better values in the area.
A challenging layout, but fair.
I liked the course layout and found it challenging from the Gold Tees. I played on a Sunday afternoon, and it was VERY slow; so slow we almost didn't finish before dark. I was told by another person in my group that normally the pace is very fast on Sunday, so this may have been an anomaly. However, there was no course marshal, so nothing could be done about the pace. Also, I expected range balls to be included for the price, but they were not.
Great course.
This course demands good shots. Keep it on the green stuff. Desert is very lush, plus you get great scenery.
Good value for the money
I've always enjoyed the lay out of this course but in 2011 the condition of the course was poor. I was pleasantly surprised to find the condition greatly improved in the fall of 2012, although it still has a ways to go in that respect.
This used to be a fun course to play but the condition has changed all that
The maintance has gone down considerably in the last year.
The tees had not been cut in the last few days and the tee markers on the par threes had not been moved for sometime.
Disappointed
We had to wait 45 minutes for our tee time. Our tee time was double booked and a tournament was running late in getting off. There was no snack cart on the course. There was no water on the cart. The marshall was at least apologetic, but this was very frustrating!
nice over seed job
best course condition since summer
distance markers now readable on sprinkler heads
facility staff excellent
Good course for great value
Course was in very good shape, for the most part straightforward golf (3-4 tricky/target golf shots) - As with any course, I would've played a few holes different. Great experience, people were nice and play was efficient.
Disappointed with course conditions
The fairways and tee boxes were overgrown, basically like playing out of the rough. Greens were true but also overgrown and shaggy, making them very slow. Most shots required you to be precise due to small target fairways and greens.
Beautiful great golf course
Great layout, beautiful scenery, not too hard, not too easy but still challenging
Great views, difficult carries
Course had just been overseeded and as a result was furry and the greens were slow and tee boxes were a bit high which is typical for this time of year. The course was quite playable and was very enjoyable. The clubhouse and course staff were very friendly. In a few weeks I am sure the course will be in excellent condition and we will try to play it again.
The course was dead. No warning when booking.
The course was dead. When the ball landed it looked like a small explosion in the grass. No warning when booking. Starter was rude and not helpful. The Pro Shop was bare, I don't think they had 3 hats in the entire shop. We played 3 courses, and this was by far the worst condition.
Challenging & fun
Very good value for the price. Challenging and fun, and the greens were spot on. I'll definitely play again. They were getting ready to overseed so the fairways were dry...
A course that requires the ability to carry desert areas on almost every hole.
People who are intimidated by having to hit over stretches of desert are going to be in trouble on this one on almost every hole. Also, the desert on each side of the fairway is home to lots of lost balls.
beware
played 18 last saturday there was no course alert on golf now and when i got there the course was dried up which they said was due to gettibng readyn for overseeding but when i returned home i read on the front page of the paper that they(vistoso) hadnt paid there water bill and the employees havent been paid in monthsso it was very disapointing because always wanted to play the course heardit was great course and probley is when its green : (((
A shadow of what it used to be
This is a nice track that has suffered seriously from lack of care. Be careful when booking low priced rates because the range is usually closed when they offer good prices. The course is struggling with watering issues and i would check the latest news before playing here. If they don't get the watering back it won't be worth the bother.
Too many desert obstructions in the fairways
The fariways were in terrible shape. There was no grass as it was dried out.
Not a good value
Course was bone dry. All brown except for greens. Ready for overseeding. Seed had not arrived. Wherein fact is, that course is in financial difficulty. Water source has been shut off due to unpaid water bills.
Should not be recommended until situation improves.
I played this course about a year ago and it was superb. This year it is scalped and dry, supposedly waiting for over-seeding.
We heard that the over-seeding was delayed because they didn't get their seed on time. An article in last week's AZ Star indicated the course is in financial distress. They paid one of their server's once in 4 months and the check bounced. Other employees at the course are continuing to work in hopes of getting paid. I'm guessing the lack of seed is tied to their financial woes. I would not golf here again until I hear that the employees are made whole.
