Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.

The Golf Club at Vistoso in Tucson has never seemed willing to cower in the presence of its resort-course cousins. Paloma and Ventana are golf resorts, but the Golf Club at Vistoso is just a golf course, and a fine one at that. This Tom Weiskopf-designed layout was a "readers write-in" Golf Magazine's "Top 100 you can play," and is a "sneaky" favorite among locals and visitors alike. The layout is nowhere near as penal as Ventana or La Paloma, and if you can find better greens in the greater Tucson area, let us know. Take note of the 166-yard, par-3 third hole -- on a clear day (there are only 323 of them) you will have an amazing view of the north side of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Very good layout - one of the best tracks in the valley.

We played Vistoso in early September. It was a bit cloudy that morning so very comfortable. This is a well-designed golf course, a challenging layout with a nice variety of holes and lots of wildlife!

Challenging course, great value.

This is a fine golf course that offers a interesting array of challenging yet enjoyable holes. The staff are appropriately attentive. I have played this course many, many times through the years, and apart from the understandable issues leading up to and coming out of fall overseeding, I have found that they keep the course in fine condition. In terms of the practice facility, I think that the recent switch to charging per bucket rather than a flat fee for unlimited balls was a mistake, but that may simply be a personal preference.

Something's up here

I played Vistoso several times this summer. The monsoons helped green it up and raise the course conditions. It's a tough, challenging course where you have to hit fairways or else you are playing in the rugged desert junk. I took advantage of their special lunch deal this summer. Don't fall for the marketing. The lunch deal was no better than a school lunch and did not include a drink, and the chips were stale. They also now charge for range balls. The furniture is sun beaten and looks old. This course is not worth the rates they ask unless you score a prepaid deal. And unless something changes for the winter season, I'd never ever pay what they will be asking. I'm thinking something's up with this place. Stay tuned I suppose.

Wait for after overseeding

Decent shape, but like most courses, wait till they are done overseeding. Typically in great shape
