DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge

About
Perched in the hills above Santa Cruz, DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge features plenty of elevation changes as well as tight, tree-lined fairways making this short layout anything but a cinch. The result of the tight layout, however, often translates into long rounds as higher handicappers look for their golf balls in the woods. Designed by Bert Stamps, the golf course opened in 1970. Conditioning is average, but DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge's green fees are a small fraction of its more famous neighbors.

Still a challenge
Playing the course for my fourth decade. The condition if the agronomy has been cyclical. This time there were several greens with a serious pock mark problem, tough putting. Many spots in the fairway were bald, use Rule 16.1.
First Round od 0222
I should have warmed up before heading out to play this course. It's harder than it looks but still a fun course to play. Staff was outstanding as well as the weather.
Tough course
Number 10 is unfair can't see the sharp left dogleg. Lots of fairway that slope into hazards. Still very challenging and my wife had fun so that was a plus. Cart return area was hard to find. Driving range was closed.
Fun track
This is a great layout. Requires precision. Greens are hard. Lots of little undulations.
Highly recommend for the price.
Challenging and fun Course
It was a perfect sunny day when we played here on Sunday 1/23/2022. It is a pretty challenging course - most fairway is pretty narrow, and tilted, some of them have trees in the middle. Greens are in pretty good shape, bit difficult to read. Overall condition is pretty good, except I wish there were bit more sand in bunkers. The pace of play was excellent - we finished in 3 hours and 40 minutes on a Sunday. Not sure this is normal or we just lucky. All in all we had good time playing here.
Great layout!
Sure there were patches in the fairway. Of course, the bunkers weren’t Augusta quality. But the layout is exceptional. Every hole plays different and you really do use every club in your bag. Usually a little slow paced to start with 2 par 3’s on the first 5 holes, but you’re in Santa Cruz where it is usually beautiful out. Enjoy the day!
Challenging and fun layout
Challenging course that combines sloped fairways and greens with beauty of natural surroundings. Now one of my favorite courses.
Decent shape. Needs some improvements.
Course was in decent shape. Greens sanded, but rolled well despite that. Tee boxes had furry longer grass. Wish it was shorter grass on the tees boxes. Fairways gave ok lies. Some tight spots that needed maintaining. Fun track. Big trees. Great layout. Challenging enough from blue, but not super tough. Can get away hitting less than driver pretty much every hole. Even par fives are layups off the tee. Either never reaching, or 17 I was on in two with a 3 hybrid and a 5 iron. Pace of play was good for a Friday, just under 4 hrs. Hot deal 60 bucks was great
Greens aerated and no warning
I don't mind paying 83 bucks to play a good course with a cart. And potentially DeLaveaga is certainly worth that. But aerated greens that we were not warned about and overgrown tee area that are crowned were a little disappointing. The layout itself is interesting and fun . More than a little disappointing today.
Didn’t even play, won’t be back.
The staff in the pro shop was horribly unprofessional and rude. It isn’t worth my time to go back.
Play during the week for better value
We were on vacation and played this course because of a recommendation from locals we played golf with at Pacific Grove.
It’s a nice municipal course but not a good value at over $100 (Green fee $80, cart $20, and tax) on a Saturday.
The greens were in good shape but there were a lot of bare spots in others areas from tee to green. The pace of play was ok for a weekend but as you’d expect a bit slow.
The staff was friendly and when I asked for tips they gave us a yardage book and said (1) on front nine, all the trouble is in the right side and (2) on the back nine all the trouble is in the left. This is a good tip because it’s correct! There are some interesting holes, doglegs, blind shots of the tees and tricky slopes based on the position of the flag.
We couldn’t warmup because the two-tier driving range was full will a lot of locals (in jeans and tee shirts just practicing).
Can’t rate the grill because it closes at 3 pm so not open when we finished at 4 pm.
If you’re in the area I’d recommend you play during the week. It’s. not a course I will put on my list to play again when I’m back in the area.
