Chesapeake Golf Club

About
Chesapeake Golf Club sits tucked away in the idyllic village of Las Gaviotas, conveniently situated just 15 minutes from downtown Norfolk. Boasting some of the best greens in the Tidewater area, the club offers the amenities of a private club with the fees of a public golf course. The layout will challenge you with rolling fairways and tricky doglegs. Water hazards come into play frequently so be prepared for a few intimidating blind shots over water. Mature trees line the rolling fairways and there are also strategically placed bunkers lurking along the greensides. The manageable 6,278-yard length is approachable for beginners yet there are still holes that long hitters will enjoy. Chesapeake Golf Club is a course that will test your skills but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper.

The course is not in good shape. Through golf now i paid $24, good price for the time i played. However if i had to pay full price of $40-$50, i would be very upset, the greens were in terrible shape, they were all cracked, i assume from standing water or just being so dried out. Doesn’t seem like they care.
Go Elswhere
I've played this course a lot over the years and have never seen it in such an abysmal state. The greens are either diseased, cracked like the Sahara, or full of weeds. The rough is so overgrown if your ball rolls even an a foot off the fairway good luck finding it. The fact they are charging players $40+ to play is near criminal for the state of the course. Easily the worst course in the area now.
Course conditions are bad especially the greens
The course layout itself is not bad, but you do have to deal with it being within a neighborhood, so, if you're one who slices or hooks, I highly DO NOT recommend. Pace of play was not bad, but I was early before most people came to play, I did catch up to a pair that started about 3 tee times ahead of me. The greens are just HORRENDOUS, weeds growing on them, dead spots with moss, honestly, there has been A LOT of rain in the past 2 months I moved here, but the greens looked abandoned, just absolute horrible greens. The price to play is cheap for the area, but coming from all around the US, I would honestly rate the course as a $5 course, one that is nearly free and no up keep except for a mow. I DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Neglected course
Course maintenance is lacking. Tee boxes are better than the greens, grass was too long to find a ball clearly in play. Layout is atrocious. Wouldn't play here again if it was free.
Horrible course, Horrible Price. DO NOT PAY FOR IT!
Went there 2 years ago for the same price, it was a great course. Now i went this past sunday and it was the worst course i have ever see . Ankle high grass on green. Greens are muddy and like concrete because they can’t keep up with the grass. Which is surprising considering it’s $45 per person. Not to mention i had to wait 15 minutes to check in because no one was found at the front desk. Horrible, do not go here.
Chesapeake GC needs repair
The course was in bad shape. Fairways were overgrown and greens were destroyed (mud, weed and fungus everywhere). I usually enjoy playing here, since the layout is tough, but right now is not a good time to play here.
Rough shape
All the greens were a disaster, the fairways were fair. The cart paths need a lot of TLC. Overall the course just needs some work
Greens are in terrible shape and make putting near impossible
Horrible Course Conditions
This course was in horrible condition and it should have been $15 dollars or less. The greens were in very bad condition and the fairways not mowed well. I lost a ton of balls in the so called first cut that was over 2 inches high. I was embarrassed because I invited a friend to play and the course was in very poor condition. Will not play there ever again.
Sad Conditions
Have played this course many of times. This is by far the worst I have ever seen the course. Agree with another review, the grass looks like it hasn’t been mowed on some holes in a week. If you were in first cut good luck on finding the ball. Greens… if you were lucky to actually get a green to putt on. Don’t see how they can possible save the greens there. Between grass overtaking it and just flat out burnt out with multiple mud spots. You could hear the ground crunching under your feet walking to the ball. Thank goodness I got today’s round on a hot deal for $26. If it would’ve been a full price round I would’ve asked for a refund.
First Tiimer - Chesapeake Golf Club
Course was in very poor condition. Greens and fungi fairway need a lot of mowing. You could not find your ball in the first cut of ruff.
Okay layout, but the COURSE WAS IN BAD CONDITION on 08/12/2024.
Friendly staff but the entire course, except for the 17th hole, was too wet and destroyed by and diseased and moldy grass. Many shots could not be found in the middle of the fairway — the grass was completely overgrown and crabgrass was abundant. Most greens couldn’t be legitimately played due to completely bare areas.
Worth the Drive
It's about an hour!s drive from Norfolk but well worth it. The people are friendly, the course was in very good shape though the greens were deceptively slow 0n this trip likely due to the extremely hot & humid weather and heavy rains. They have reasonable prices in their bar/restaurant. The pace of play was excellent. Course is challenging but not overly so. You can score well if you keep in the fairways. Quite a few water hazards but they are manageable. Will play this course 3 or 4 times in the summer.
Course in terrible shape
I have played this course many times. It used to be one of the best hidden treasures in the area. Price continues to climb and the course has consistently deteriorated. Not one good green on the course anymore. Might as well putt in the parking lot. Fairways were ok. Tee boxes need to be rotated more frequently. Roughs need manicured. No longer worth the time or money.
Just played today on 8/12/2024 and I completely agree with your assessment.
The course has deteriorated a lot. I believe so much so that I will not play there again until I know the course has had a huge renovation.
