Chesapeake Golf Club
About
Chesapeake Golf Club sits tucked away in the idyllic village of Las Gaviotas, conveniently situated just 15 minutes from downtown Norfolk. Boasting some of the best greens in the Tidewater area, the club offers the amenities of a private club with the fees of a public golf course. The layout will challenge you with rolling fairways and tricky doglegs. Water hazards come into play frequently so be prepared for a few intimidating blind shots over water. Mature trees line the rolling fairways and there are also strategically placed bunkers lurking along the greensides. The manageable 6,278-yard length is approachable for beginners yet there are still holes that long hitters will enjoy. Chesapeake Golf Club is a course that will test your skills but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper.

Green on the back nine. Pretty representative of a fair number of greens. Photo submitted by marcpeot on 06/09/2024

Okay layout, but the COURSE WAS IN BAD CONDITION on 08/12/2024.
Friendly staff but the entire course, except for the 17th hole, was too wet and destroyed by and diseased and moldy grass. Many shots could not be found in the middle of the fairway — the grass was completely overgrown and crabgrass was abundant. Most greens couldn’t be legitimately played due to completely bare areas.
Worth the Drive
It's about an hour!s drive from Norfolk but well worth it. The people are friendly, the course was in very good shape though the greens were deceptively slow 0n this trip likely due to the extremely hot & humid weather and heavy rains. They have reasonable prices in their bar/restaurant. The pace of play was excellent. Course is challenging but not overly so. You can score well if you keep in the fairways. Quite a few water hazards but they are manageable. Will play this course 3 or 4 times in the summer.
Course in terrible shape
I have played this course many times. It used to be one of the best hidden treasures in the area. Price continues to climb and the course has consistently deteriorated. Not one good green on the course anymore. Might as well putt in the parking lot. Fairways were ok. Tee boxes need to be rotated more frequently. Roughs need manicured. No longer worth the time or money.
Fun Golf Course
I have played this course a couple of times. The layout is pretty simple, no dog leg rights or lefts. My only complaint is that the bunkers definitely need more sand. I plan on coming back.
Hot day at Chesapeake
The greens were in decent shape. The fairways were running fast and the pace of play was right on 4 hours. We didn’t get pushed, but we did have to wait on a few holes. We haven’t played here in over a year, but we noticed new sand in the bunkers and overall good course conditions . It was a good day!
Good Value.
The layout is very good because the homes are not too close and the course is not very difficult.
Pleasantly surprised
I played Chesapeake twice last year and wasn't very happy either time with the condition of the course. One of my golfing friends told me last week he had just played it and it was in good shape so I thought I'd give it a try. For the most part, the fairways were good with some bare spots. Same holds true for the tee boxes. The majority of the greens were in good shape but several look to be in trouble. A couple contained large brown spots. The grass was still there and rolling over these spots wasn't an issue, but if they are not tended to I fear they will have some real issues.
The course isn't the longest course by any means but it presents some very challenging holes. The course does have houses around (not all holes) and in places can be narrow..
I will definitely play this course again!
ChesapeakeGC
Great course layout with a great amount of difficulty. Pace of play was fine for a holiday. Greens were nice in spite of no rain in the area for about two weeks. However, you could notice the no rain and limited water on the fairways, pretty hard and got weird bounces.
Nice course
The only issues I had were the greens were very burnt on alot of holes. Other than that it was a nice day for golf
Save your money
To begin with, we knew this was going to be a busy day at a mediocre golf course. We’ve played here before, but it was a very nice Sunday morning and we found a reasonable tee time.
That said - as a neighborhood golf course, this is only suitable for first time players, neighborhood walk-ons, and rowdy youngsters. This doesn’t play near the $51/each we paid for this course. Highlights:
- No carts. Despite needing a cart to start on a weekend, there were none to be had, and the cart we ended up receiving (after our tee time) was in bad shape.
- No starter, despite seeing the starter cart. We started 20 minutes after our tee time (never saw a starter) and no one organized groups going out. There were several twosomes in a row that could have been combined to mitigate the late starts
- course conditions were abysmal. We are not in drought conditions in Chesapeake. Tee boxes were bare-panned hard earth. Tees were hard to push in. No one has cleared the tee boxes of broken tees in weeks. Fairways were sparse, burned out, and hard as a rock. Greens were also hard, unkept, and cracked (see photo). Sand traps were packed earth traps. There is no evidence this course uses their sprinklers. Don’t use your best clubs!
- We saw the 18-year-old “Marshall” once - when he very nearly rear-ended us at the fifth hole. Groups played slowly, with at least one group that was so slow they took more than 30 minutes to finish a relatively straightforward par 4 on the back nine after repeatedly looking for their eight tee shots that went everywhere but the fairway. No one was managing course play at all.
- refreshment cart passed us twice. On one hole, she watched two groups go by while she was distracted by a greens keeper.
- this course is super tight. Nothing they can do about it, but be aware that there is less “golf course” on this golf course than most places.
I’ve never quit a round of golf in my life, but my son and I left after it took nearly five hours to complete 14 holes, with four foursomes in front of us that never had the proper pace. Overbooked, overvalued, and poorly managed. Leave this course to the Las Gaviotas neighborhood weekenders to play. Don’t pay more than $20 ever.
I'm sorry you feel that way. Chesapeake has been in a drought for over two months, the facts show that. We do run out of carts, but not because of over booking, we just have a limited amount of carts till when get the new ones in. I completely agree, twosomes need to be paired up at all times, and that's on us. Tee-Boxes, Fairways and greens are in good shape, so I'm sorry that you don't feel that way, but most of our customers have said the course is looking good. We have two marshal carts and we have one marshal riding the course at all times and the young man you are talking about is a cart staff member and we will send someone out if there is a problem, so that might be why you saw him as well. ALSO....You can call the pro-shop with slow play. I can also assure you the sprinklers work and we use them. Again, I'm sorry about your round and how you feel. My door is open and the staff will always give you my email and cell number to discuss issues before leaving a review. And you are more then welcome to email me or call me. my email: charleslynn@hamptonroadsgolf.com or 757-547-1122

Just played today on 8/12/2024 and I completely agree with your assessment.
The course has deteriorated a lot. I believe so much so that I will not play there again until I know the course has had a huge renovation.
