The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Course is in Gross Negligence
I understand COVID-19 has impacted many courses in the Bay Area. Having recognized that, there is zero excuses for a Monterey County course that has previously been a delight to play (over 30 rounds), to fall into such a sad neglected state. It is suffering from lack of water on fairway and greens, the range is crammed with people waiting to get on, the greens hard as concrete. Honestly, I played San Jose Municipal during this same period and its conditions are far superior at 16% the green fee ($195 vs $33). Sure, the Monterey weather is stunning... but for $195 you expect a premium course and that is not what Black Horse / Bayonet has become.
Slightly disappointed
Given the fact that some courses aren’t open yet I shouldn’t complain, however I didn’t find Bayonet in very good shape. There were a lot of brown spots on the fairways :( for $100 green fee I expected a better course
Bayonet is always a test
The course is running fast and firm. You have to hit a well struck iron to hold the green. Be below the hole if you can. Don’t short side yourself.
Great course for the price.
This is second time I played bayonet. First time was a little tough and shot 101 kinda frustrating day. Played today and shot 84! Great course, beautiful scenery, nice trees. Fast greens. Players course for $60 is not bad at all.
Fun
The staff and course was great. It’s a fun and easy play with beautiful views! Will definitely be back!
Great to be back out golfing.
Bayonet is always in great shape. I was concerned the COVID19 restrictions may degrade the experience, but I was wrong. Checkin was easy since we had prepaid, the range was open and pre-stocked with balls at each socially-distanced station, and the on-course experience was wonderful. Some will not be fans of the elevated cup being used, but it works out just fine.
Difficult course
Great layout
Interesting holes but playable from the white tees
Had fog roll in but no wind!!!!
"Real Golf" Be Smart, Be Focused.
As tough a course you will ever play. Smart, focused players who can place shots without trying to hit long will benefit. Keep ball in fairway and stay out of fairway bunkers! Greens are mostly fast. Best to have uphill putts. AND some of the most beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean and Monterey Bay! Staff as helpful and accommodating as can be-they know how demanding a day can be there-but fulfilling just as much.
Slippery slopes
the Supt.. should provide putting lessons, count on at least putting 3x, 80% of the time
Great place
This is a Wonderful golf course. Great staff. Great breakfast. It is hard though. Bring your big boy game.
Super tough greens...
But a really nice and fair course. Fairways were nice/in solid shape . LOTS of sand traps both in fairways and guarding and around greens. Definitely a course I’d play again. At 50+ golf now fee, it was well worth the price 1/2 to 1/3 of the normal rate.
Putting is a challenge
This is a challenging course for a 16 handicapper, the greens are exceptionally fast
Greens
Enjoy playing here. Greens were very fast and tough pin placements. But will definitely play here again. Friendly staff.
Course is in very rough shape
I’ve played Bayonet many times over the last 3 years. Unfortunately the course is in very poor shape right now. There is so little grass on the fairways and greens that you can see dirt through the razor thin grass. The fairways are also loaded with old divots and the greens have lots of old ball marks. I hope they find a way to rejuvenate the course - it’s not fun to play right now.
