It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.

The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

A little disappointed.

Having played these courses quite a few years ago, I guess I was expecting a great improvement after its renovation. The fairways were in rough shape and the traps were quite varied from dirt traps to some sand bunkers. All the trees were much better trimmed but the fairways look as if they have too much play. The course is still challenging due to the layout but compared to other Monterey area courses this was a little below par.

Perfect Day

Sunshine in the mid-sixties. Wide fairways with bunkers placed to force the golfer to carefully place their shots. Putting difficult on fast greens with many bare spots. Nice restaurant, entire staff from pro shop to cart handlers very friendly.

This course is absolutely beautiful; It's like the course has ocean views almost every other hole. The greens were CRAZY FAST and the course was still a little wet from all the rain the previous week but overall it was a great day. Highly recommend this course.

Love this course! Difficult but satisfying. The greens are nice and fast enough to question your skills or lack of. No bottled water on the 10th hole? Thats alright. The back nine is always a treat. Will be back!

Bring your A,B or C game

Do not kid yourself.Is what I’ll usually tell myself when playing these courses.The tracks are championship grade so, play well and if you aren’t that day-don’t take it too seriously.Prepare to air it out and work on your short game at the same.The greens are tricky sweet and can play incredibly high on the stimp...mostly.This is enjoyable golf at Bayonet & Blackhorse and these courses do there job spectacularly well..The staff are and have always been professional and courteous.The pro shop is stocked well for its size.The clubhouse restaurant will take care of you.Drinks are plenty and the views are legit throughout.Enjoy!

Pebble Beach Without the Salt Air

This is a gem of a course in the Monterrey Bay Area. Spectacular grounds, Coastal Oaks, Monterrey Pines...I'm hesitant to provide a super-positive review as I'd like to keep it on the DL and I'd hate for it to get too much attention But need to be honest.

Great layout and value
