The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Putting is a challenge
This is a challenging course for a 16 handicapper, the greens are exceptionally fast
Greens
Enjoy playing here. Greens were very fast and tough pin placements. But will definitely play here again. Friendly staff.
Course is in very rough shape
I’ve played Bayonet many times over the last 3 years. Unfortunately the course is in very poor shape right now. There is so little grass on the fairways and greens that you can see dirt through the razor thin grass. The fairways are also loaded with old divots and the greens have lots of old ball marks. I hope they find a way to rejuvenate the course - it’s not fun to play right now.
Incredible day
Bayonet was outstanding! Incredibly friendly staff and a great test of golf. A must play when in the Monterey area.
Staff was professional and timely
Love this course. Probably too difficult for me but manageable from the white tees.
Greens are too severe for speed
Bayonet is a "championship" layout that always features pathchy, tightly mown, wet thin turf, uneven rough(gophers), and very firm, slick, but rather bald, severely contoured and sloping greens. Bring your A+ game and only hit high, soft irons, as most holes don't allow for run-ups to many pin positions.
Views of Monterey Bay are spectacular, the practice area is the best in the area, food's good, and their weekly demo -day allows you hit nearly all brands of clubs with good quality practice balls.
Excellent overall operation, but it's "work" playing both courses in the always chilly Monterey weather, with thin, tight lies, and the greens are often ridiculous considering the speed/contouring/firmness.
For the 40 years that I've played these courses, it's always been a challenge to grow good turf in this location.
Great course and value
Course is a great tough layout. I hadn’t played the course since the redesign about 10 years ago, but it is a lot more forgiving than before due to clearing of many trees and making landing areas larger. With the golf now “hot deal” rates it has to be one of the best values in the country. Highly recommend this course.
Challenging greens
Get ready for some 4 putts. Greens are super fast in many places and hard to read. Awesome course though and you’ll want to come back
Come to Bayonet if you want to be tested. Course is in awesome shape. Greens are firm and fast. Course knowledge is required to be successful.
Come play Bayonet if you want yo be tested. Course is in awesome shape. Fairways and greens are firm. Beautiful views everywhere. Course knowledge needed to be successful. I highly recommend playing here.
A little disappointed.
Having played these courses quite a few years ago, I guess I was expecting a great improvement after its renovation. The fairways were in rough shape and the traps were quite varied from dirt traps to some sand bunkers. All the trees were much better trimmed but the fairways look as if they have too much play. The course is still challenging due to the layout but compared to other Monterey area courses this was a little below par.
Perfect Day
Sunshine in the mid-sixties. Wide fairways with bunkers placed to force the golfer to carefully place their shots. Putting difficult on fast greens with many bare spots. Nice restaurant, entire staff from pro shop to cart handlers very friendly.
Super good as usual!
Best course to play in the winter!! Hardly any drainage issues. I heard the course is built on sand so it drains really well! Fun place for everyone.
Fair Challenge
Staff was very friendly and course was in great shape even during this wet season. Tons of character on the tough greens. Great experience.
Absolutely Beautiful Course
This course is absolutely beautiful; It's like the course has ocean views almost every other hole. The greens were CRAZY FAST and the course was still a little wet from all the rain the previous week but overall it was a great day. Highly recommend this course.
