The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Don't Be Fooled
Open looking fairways lull you into a sense of security until one of the multiple traps grabs your ball. Greens can be very undulating depending on pin placement. You may put uphill until the ball reaches the hole and then it's downhill and into a catchment area if you hit it too hard. Distance control is very important on the fairway shots to avoid the bunkers; on the approach shots to be below the hole and on the undulating putts.
Best value on the Monterey Peninsula
The Bayonet/Black Horse courses are fantastic. Challenging but fair. You earn every bit of your score here. The courses are beautifully maintained and provide wonderfully framed holes. It's always a treat to return.
What a GREAT GOLF COURSE!
I played Bayonet on the reccomandation from a friend. What a treat! Great layout with fairways outlined by a tough rough and big trees. Keep the ball in play and you will be all right, get out of position, and you will pay the price. After you ha negotiated the foregoing, you will have to deal with the greens - just make sure you place your approach shot below the hole to have a fighting chance.
I loved this course so much that it is going to be my course when I go to Carmel.
Enjoy!
Great Courses
Bayonet on my Birthday, only thing that would beat it would be Pebble! Great weather, great course, and great friends, what a day! The rough can be tough so keep it on the fairway! Greens run true and have some tricky reads. Bunkers are challenging but sand is perfect in them. Play both courses if you can, Black Horse is great as well!
Great course and test of your game. Best value anywhere
Fun course!
Course is in excellent shape. Practice facilities - range and chipping green - also top notch. Like anywhere in Monterey, fog can be a challenge.
Scenic Monterey play
Outstanding course. Beautifully maintained from tee box to greens. Provides challenge, but very fair and price is right. Practice area same level of excellence as course.
Bayonet
A really long course and plenty challenging especially front 9 a little easier on the back 9, overall for quality and value it's tough to beat.
Bad timing?
We went out behind a NorCal SoCal tournament, took 1 hour to finish 3 holes, starter said we were only 5 minutes off pace of play?? Group in front of us played rock music in their cart most of the day, obviously drunk, no one says anything, and this is a NorCal tourney? All in all a terrible golf outing.
Great day at Bayonet
This course is a lot of fun to play. Beautiful surroundings, challenging but fair, and the course was in excellent shape. Really nice practice area with a great short game area. On the driving range there were green like areas to hit too which I really like. Had breakfast first and the chorizo and eggs were delicious and meals were substantial. Excellent customer service from the pro shop, outside services and the restaurant. Definitely want to go back again this is a course you need to see a couple of times to get it right.
Two different nines
The front nine was rather straightforward and had playable interesting holes. The last few holes on the backside were too gimmicky
Lets do it again
World Superbikes at Laguna Raceway and golfing at Bayonet on the same weekend. It doesn't get any better than that. The golf course and the weather at 7am was perfect. I was a single and shot alone, no one at the course that early that day, Greens were perfect and pretty quick. Sand bunkers were very clean, no rocks or clay--. was done in 3 hrs and had the best of time. Only had to wait on 18th green form the group-two sum in front of me, I would recommend it for sure. Will be back next year.
Love playing at Bayonet/Blackhorse but check green conditions first
Both of these courses are excellent. Sets up really well to play 36, with clubhouse and the two courses around it. Highly recommend with one caveat: As you are setting up your tee time, ask which course is going through any maintenance such as sanding/punching the greens. Both times I have played Bayonet, the greens had been sanded - I am sure they are always working on one or the other course. It was not bad, but I will definitely ask next time because both courses are excellent and does matter (to me) which one I play. Playing the one that is not sanded would be preferable.
US Open Tough
Course played like a US Open. Fun layout but the pins were super tough. I would expect easier pin locations for us amateurs. However this course deserves a Web.com Tour event or a Champions Tour event the way it will play for the pros and next year's PGA Professional Championship.
Challenging, interesting and fun.
Our foursome really enjoyed Bayonet. Nice course visually with some elevation and no tricks. Unlimited bottles of water available and the staff is great. Good value so we will be back.
Great course. Suffered a little because of the very wet winter. Still, one of the nicest places to play in the entire area. We come from New Mexico every year to play.
