The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
It was upon this land that General Bob McClure constructed the Bayonet Golf Course in 1954 and, due to Bayonet's initial acclaim, Fort Ord decided to expand the course. In 1964 a second 18-hole championship course named Black Horse was officially opened.
The Bayonet and Black Horse courses are steeped in rich tradition and have played host to PGA Tour greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, as well as several U.S. Presidents and foreign dignitaries. After a practice round in 1997, PGA Tour Professional Billy Andrade said, "If they play the U.S. Open here, the scores would be over par. It's tough, but it's fun!" One thing is for certain, the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses offer golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

Great course - Bayonet
Wonderful course in beautiful setting. Truly a gem. But bring your best game as the greens are fast and challenging to read. Requires good accuracy with irons. Staff was friendly and food quite tasty.
Bayonet: Fair but challenging...(if you know the course)
Had a great time. some tight driving holes if you don't shape the ball. Greens where rolling very good. Tough course to score well on the first time seeing it...but fair, so I'd like another crack at it. Definitely a repeat play...especially at this rate! Saw cart girl one time in 18 holes...grill closes around 3.
Prepare to be frustrated
I have played the Bayonet and Blackhorse courses numerous times starting when I was stationed at Fort Ord. These courses used to be difficult, but fun to play. If the intent was to make the redesigned Bayonet a challenging course for better golfers the designers have succeeded. Bayonet has a great layout and it plays long. Course conditions were good, however the fairways were spotty and muddy in many areas and the greens were hard and fast. Pin placements on the day that I played were ridiculous. Missing a five foot putt should not leave you with a ten foot putt back to the hole. Undulating greens should not have extreme breaks next to the hole, Save that for the PGA. My recommendations to make the course play better is to soften the greens and allow the fairway grass to grow a little longer. Don't expect to shoot low on this course.
Always enjoyabl
Fairways very thin- much more than usual. Rough has some areas where grass is not growing (I mean in close proximity to the fairway). Ball would be on bare spot surrounded by thick grass. The rough should be penalty enough without finding your ball on bare spots. I've played the course probably 50-60 times and almost always
In better condition. Played with a friend who had never played there and he loved the course, as do I.
Bayonet
Beautiful but tough course...tight lies on the fairways and lightning fast greens...a real challenge and loads of drum!!!
Muddy conditions
The course had numerous areas staked out as ground under repair. Conditions need to improve.
Fun Round
Course in good condition, greens not consistent, some fast some slow. Good pace of play.
Course is interesting and challenging. Negatives were (1) the fairways could use some growing grass, (2) there was a lot of construction activity, grading and tree removal.
Great Experience
Boggy Player
This course is extremely challenging for me but it is due to things relative to my golf. The course itself is just great and is my favorite public course here in the Monterey area. Pricing is great for afternoon play and for the quality of the course you can not match.
A very nice and challenging afternoon of golf. Highly recommended. Sister course, Black Horse, is more open if that is an issue.
Amazing conditions, beautiful course
What others have said about this course is pretty much true. It is beautifully maintained (greens fast and true) and on a lovely day (upper 60's no wind) is about as perfect a round as you can get. Bayonet/Blackhorse is the best value on the peninsula. Poppy Hills, even for NCGA members had a walking rate of $75 plus another $25 for a cart. This I think is overpriced as Bayonet has better views, equally good conditions, and is just as hard. I paid $59 for a 7.40 AM tee time. Can't say enough about the quality of the course. Pace of play was good as we followed a foursome with ours and made it in about 4 hours 15 min. If you are between 10 and 18 handicap, do the white tees. It'll be more than challenging enough.
Everything went according to plan but....
I arrived at Bayonet Golf Course about two hours early and right from the start i was greeted by a friendly attendant that took my clubs and other stuff from the car right to the pro shop. Once at the pro shop, they greeted me and and registered me and gave me enough range ball for my three some. The range was a little busy but did get in a proper warm up. Then as my tee time approached the starter was attentive and got us out early. the round went well to our standards and the services attendant the greeted us after the round attended to our needs and even cleaned our clubs, ladies first. The only thing i was disappointed in was that the restaurant closed at 3 and we had to look elsewhere to have lunch. Which was no big deal and I will always go back to this golf course. A1 in my book
Very nice course
Played at Bayonet last Sunday and the course was in its top condition with fast greens. The nice early autumn weather with light wind made the experience even better.
Challenging Course
I play this course whenever I am in the area. The layout is great and the greens are very challenging. It is a great test of golf. The only issue this time was some of the fairways were a bit spotty at times, but overall a wonderful test of golf.
'Excellent courses
We are a foursome that plays every week. We all enjoy coming here. Our last round was definitely more challenging though as the course was set up for tournament play. The extra high rough cost us extra shots on this day. Course management was essential. Was still very fun.
This course was above my expectations
This was my first time playing here and it exceeded my expectations. The course was in great shape and challenging from hole # 1 through the 18th. I would recommend this course for intermediate players and above. I will be back to enjoy this excellent golf course. Very clean and professionally run course.
Awesome value
Probably one of the most interesting layouts I played. The course is challenging but fair. Wind invites itself on some holes, then disappears! Greens are faahhhst. Had a really nice time and the deal made it even sweeter!
Bayonet
The course was in great shape. I played in the afternoon which always adds the challenge of the wind which really makes for a fun day of second guessing your clubs. I was paired up with 2 local course regulars, who were great guys, with a lot of insight. The only negative was the pro shop, I was told, no pin sheet available, which in my opinion was ridiculous due to the importance of being in the right position on your approach shots. They treated me like a peasant that had no business inside the building, very disappointing knowing the roots of the course originally catered to our men and women in the military. It wasn't a bad day however, the starter, cart guy, and the bartender were friendly.
