Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course

About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Outstanding fairways and greens
The course conditions were outstanding. The fairways and greens were impeccable. The sand bunkers were well maintained. There was a good variety of challenging holes. Reasonable number of bunkers and a few greens had multiple levels which I struggled with maintaining my average score. There were no water features. Practice facilities were nice as was the clubhouse. Maybe a couple of things I didn’t expect. There were large expansive areas along the side of the fairways with sand. The construction of new homes were in progress adjacent to four holes. Although they appear to be nearing completion.
A real plus was the hillside location where from several holes you get a great view of Monterey Bay in the distance.
Best two courses in Monterey
Being in black horse, never disappoint. Staff is always the best. Thank you for a great experience.
Awesome time
I wish I hot the club house after the ninth whole but the view of the ocean was amazing and the greens were amazing
Beautiful Morning @ Blackhorse
I have played this course many times and have never seen it in better condition from tee to green. Bunkers are well maintained and consistent. I had an 8AM tee time as a single on a Tuesday morning and was able to play in 3 hours riding. The staff was very friendly and accommodating (from the pro shop, starter and on-course beverage service). You can pay a lot more for golf in Monterey, but you won't have a better experience.
Slippery slope
Course is in great shape. The difficulty begins on the greens. Fast with subtle not so subtle breaks. We pretty much had a putt-a-thon the whole day.
Great course
Great course! Playing partner broke hand on 7th hole and credit wasn’t issued due to injury.
Excellent Course
I really enjoyed playing Black Horse. The greens were very challenging and the fairways were like greens. I would highly recommend this course.
Outstanding
Everything about the experience was 5 star. Outstanding! Too bad they are building houses on many of the holes, but otherwise as good as any other 5 star course out there.
Beautiful Course
The course is beautiful to look at and play! Everything done to the course is first class! The only draw back is the extensive amount of sand outside of the sand traps! It’s nice to save water in unnecessary lawn areas but you got carried away. Also you need to loosen up on the electronic sensors seemingly not placed in less strategic areas! Even traveling near dirt areas seemed to set them off! Ugh!
Black Horse was not a long shot at all
Loved the course and it's layout. The staff was great at adjusting our tee time to allow an earlier start. Greens were true across all holes. It was a most enjoyable experience.
Beautiful and Challenging
The weather was beautiful - clear and sunny, just perfect in the morning and then the clouds appeared and the fog rolled in. It got cold and was tough to see the holes through the fog.
The course has lots of sand dunes and bunkers. A very challenging but fun layout. Great course conditions, Greens were nice and the putts rolled true. One hole had ongoing construction which was distracting.
Pace of play was excellent - finished in less than 4 hours. Good signage was helpful as we hadn't played here before.
Warmer day in Monterey
I played here several times. It’s always been in good shape. Practice facility is awesome. Staff are always friendly and pace of play was great during mid week.
It looks like they’re doing some re-modeling around the course. It’s in great shape though just watch your balls closely:)
You won’t regret playing here.
Great Course
As always a great experience, the greens are always challenging . The new waste areas are very difficult to advance the ball out of. Recommend you chip back to the fairway
Excellent except the sanded rough
It still has much area with the sand, which is supposed to be rough. I would recommend this course to my frienedes after they are really covered by the grass or any other plants.
Also we needed to wait 2~3 minutes per every shot until 11th hole though we could finish in 4hrs 25minutes.
Great Value
… but not the WalMart kind. Everything about this facility is first class given the expense and the neighborhood it’s in. Both golf courses are routed well with interesting bunkering from Fairway to Green. All of the Green complexes have intriguing features worthy of any golfer’s imagination. Bottom line, this golf course is worth playing for anyone visiting the Monterey area, regardless of what your options options are, and is worthy of being the focus of a trip if you’re not able to access the more expensive and more private options. It’s a must play. In fact, both courses are
