Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Course is going downhill
I have played this course many times and this will be the last until the improve the course conditions. First off if you are off the green you can't putt because the grass is so uneven and has grass patches that will not allow an even roll. The rough is spotty so the ball is either sitting way up or down in the dirt. The sand bunkers, particularly hole one was hard as a rock with no sand. The rest were either same or inconsistent The tee boxes were not good. The only thing that was not bad was the putting greens. With the current conditions of the course they should not be charging $119.
Terrible fairway condition for a high caliber course
Played Bayonet and Black Horse on 8/15/21 and 8/16/21. Fairways were deceased or something, as they were dry and patchy on all 18 holes of Bayonet and on many of the holes in Black Horse. Greens were top-seeded but fast, so that was Ok. I wish GolfNow would have explained the conditions for us to pay $119 per round. I was told the course was great, but conditions were in very poor condition. My guess is that is will take 3-4 months at least to get the fairways in decent conditions. Wait until Nov 2021 after to play these courses unless they discount the green fees due to conditions.
Bring your A game for Bayonnet
Tough but fun course. Some elevation changes through out the course. Greens were firm, quick, and true. Fairway, boxes, and rough were fine, not supreme. Punishes you off the tee if you miss, tons of trees on every hole. The gloomy sky, construction sounds, and maintenance guys could’ve made for a smoother experience, but I will be back. Ps Monday is the maintenance day it seems.
fairways
a lot of the fairways are suffering from uneven turf, lack of grass and bare dirt conditions. not sure if drought related or lack of care or overplay or otherwise.
Not up to it’s usual par
Range and Bayonet are closed due to a car show. I new the course was closed but range wasn’t mentioned. Not cool. The practice putting green is in bad shape and not indicative of the course.
Blackhorse is a challenge with its tough greens always but today seemed tougher than normal. Some areas of the course need mowing and cleanup done and tee boxes need attention too.
I’d like someone to please tell me why the twelfth hole is cart path only? Idiotic! It just slows everyone down and backs things up.
I’ll be back and I hope things get better.
NIce Day
The Staff was very friendly and professional. The layout is excellent and challenging. The course conditions were a bit hard. The greens were very firm. The fairways were thin. I am not sure why because I don't live in the area. I have played there multiple times and will return. Both courses are fantastic and enjoyable to play but I am hoping the fairways and the greens are in better shape next time.
Great course
Great course, I would highly recommend playing either course. It’s unfortunate that they are in the process of building houses in the course and have removed many trees. I was fortunate enough to get great weather, played there last month around the same time of day and the fog was so thick you couldn’t see the pins halfway down some of the fairways
I love this place
Course plays long, but is a lot of fun and a great challenge. Some of the fairways need some love, but overall in good condition. They could use some more “cart path only” because there are a lot of tracks in the fairway.

Classic Monterey——Blackhorse is at least 4 strokes and many problem trees easier than Bayonet——-it also has better views of Monterey Bay
Fun course
Fun course not maintained as well as it should be for the money . Regular estes are $170 . I wouldn’t pay that.
Black Horse Review
I’ve been playing Black Horse and Bayonet since 1994 and always have liked it. However, yesterday I teed off first with two other gentlemen and we had a real nice time. My overall rating is a little better than I gave Bayonet because the course seemed to be in a little better shape. The greens were not quite as fast as Bayonet, but they were fast, but A nice shot landing slightly short on on the front of the green could still run over that back. It’s unfortunate that these two courses are no longer as beautiful as they once were, I think all the home construction and houses going up and mega tree removal takes away from much of the value overall.
Fairways in Terrible shape
This course should be better. The fairways barely had any grass (the rough was lush). When you keep the ball in the fairway, you expect you will get a decent lie. Not so. Not sure if they are reseeding the whole course or what but it was worse than most muni courses.
Pace of Play was Perfection.
My husband and I were celebrating our Anniversary with a round of golf at Black Horse. We arrived an hour early and were greeted by a friendly starter who invited us to tee off early. We played by ourselves, enjoying the lovely views of Monterey Bay in 3 hours and 20 minutes.
